HTC U11 may get two more major updates beyond Android O

16

Officially announced a couple of days ago, the HTC U11 will be released in the US (and other markets) in early June, coming with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box.

Like most high-end Android smartphones launched in recent times, the U11 should receive major software updates for about 2 years after hitting shelves. This means that the handset should be updated to Android O (once Google releases it - sometime in late summer), as well as to the next version of the platform - Android P, which will likely arrive in the second half of 2018.

Talking to Trusted Reviews, Chailin Chang, president of smartphones and connected devices at HTC, confirmed that the U11 would get "updates to the next two versions of Android" - no surprise here.

What's interesting is that, according to Trusted Reviews, Chailin Chang further mentioned that HTC "may extend support to the next three versions of Android" for the U11. However, this "will depend on the hardware and software demands of the version [...] and if it will bring value to the consumer." In other words, sometime in 2019, the HTC U11 might be updated to Android Q, though this will ultimately depend on what Google has in mind for Android Q.

Of course, a lot of things can (and will) change until 2019, but it's quite nice to hear that HTC is considering supporting the U11 beyond the regular 2-year software update plans.
