HTC Thunderbolt to be launched without mobile hotspot and Skype video
The HTC Thunderbolt is widely anticipated by Verizon customers. Not only is it the carrier's first 4G enabled handset, the phone also will feature mobile hotspots which will allow you to have up to 8 devices connected together over the carrier's 4G network. Another exciting feature is the video calls over Skype. Both of these require the Thunderbolt to be hooked up to a 4G network. It all sounds good but there is a problem and the word is coming directly from Verizon.

The carrier is telling its reps that the mobile hotspot function will not be working at launch and to stay tuned for more information, which is the advice we would give you exactly. And there's more. The Skype video chat will be installed at launch, but will not be functional. There will be a placeholder icon and customers should receive a notice as to when it will be working. Once that notice is received, you will be able to access the Skype app via a download from the Android Market.

Ok, but what about simultaneous voice and data over 3G. To quote Verizon's release to its reps, "There is functionality in the Thunderbolt that allows simultaneous voice and data while on the VZW 3G network; however, we cannot promise the experience will be the one that is consistent with our brand. As a result, do not reference this functionality as a benefit during your conversations with customers."

The cellphone market is intensively competitive which is why phones are getting launched perhaps a little earlier than they should be. Even within the same carrier, there is intense competition-Motorola DROID Bionic or HTC Thunderbolt-Verizon customers, which one would you choose?
