HTC ThunderBolt Hands-on

You know who stole the show today at Verizon's press event because it was instantly obvious to everyone in attendance when the lights turned off and thunderous sounds could be heard from all around. Without question, you can say for sure that Big Red is quite happy with the HTC Thunderbolt since it ...

@ 1:03 video says "for voice and data at once." Maybe that might answer one of the questions raised that Ive seen if your able to talk and surf at the same time.
4. tino (unregistered) posted on 06 Jan 2011, 20:27 1 7
yea you can voice and data at the same time but i still say BOOO! to this phone :(

Totally agree. There is no point in buying this phone. Dual core is here. Why buy a phone that is already outdated. I wish I could buy the iphone, but if they dont make id a dual core for verizon, again there is no point becuase it will be a generation behind when it comes out.
35. Shaddix (unregistered) posted on 15 Jan 2011, 09:02 0 0
Please tell me, why do you need a dual core phone?
37. FightForTheLost posted on 16 Jan 2011, 10:37 0 0
True. It's still gonna fly at warp speed even without it though, because the RAM is higher and it has the newer Sense on top of it. The Bionic is dual-core but has Blur built into it...that'll drag its performance down.
Also, there's a reason why the option to root your phone is available almost before Day 1 of any given device's release: so you can overclock and optimize the framework of the system. lol.
40. vollick11 posted on 19 Jan 2011, 00:29 2 1
First off, an iphone is not going to give you much more than any phone that is already on verizons network. The only difference is really OS. Which really comes down to preference. The iphone that is coming for verizon wont have duel core or 4g. This phone wont have duel core(which is not needed its a damn phone, most computers have a duel core), but it has more ram, with total of 40gb re-installed. Honestly what else do you want your phone to do?
51. Joemama (unregistered) posted on 30 Jan 2011, 17:46 0 0
Single core phones may even be faster because Android 2.2 is not optimized to take advantage of two cores. It was designed for single core phones.
39. fb_dragon76 posted on 18 Jan 2011, 06:39 2 0
this phone is far from outdated. Even without dual core it will be just fine. Evo isnt showing signs of slowing down and this phone has the innards of the mytouch 4g which is getting some great numbers on quadrant.. i thinks its going to do very well for those wanting a larger screen, crap load of customization options and the new sense UI. I look forward to seeing what ppl will choose with Verizon new selection of phones
57. skymitch89 posted on 04 Feb 2011, 18:53 0 0
It can do voice and data at the same time, but mostly because the data will be LTE (a GSM technology) and the voice will still be running on the EV-DO network.

man this phone sucks ..1GHz Snapdragon processor..everyone was saying 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor..and no dual core like everyone was says ...sucks... i was waiting 4 months to get this phone :(...thats why there are giving you a 32g sd micro card to go with this phone ...and one more thing the front cam is not 5mags its only 1.3 ...I SAY BOOO!............:(.....

@ TINO....YES IT IS A 1.2 GHZ PROCESSOR RUNNING! AT 1 GHZ THOUGH....THIS CAN BE CHANGED BY HTC THROUGH A SOFTWARE UPDATE OR BY HACKING OF COURSE....
AT EVERYONE ELSE...
Is there a micro usb cable to hdmi that could work on this phone...i know about the galaxy s one but that won't work on this when i get it....thanks

it can :) wow i hope so you just made my DAY :):):) now im happy
58. skymitch89 posted on 04 Feb 2011, 18:59 0 0
Actually it is only a 1Ghz processor, no underclocking. I'm sure that it'll eventually get overclocked to almost 2Ghz once the people over at sdx-developers gets their hands on it.
Don't believe me? Google "snapdragon", click on the wikipedia page, press Ctrl + f, type in "thunderbolt" and look at the info for that processor.
64. Guinzo posted on 03 Jan 2012, 21:05 0 0
yea true, it can be overclocking to 2Ghz+,
but you will drain yer battrey faster and....
why you want 1.2Ghz or 2 Ghz speed anyway?are you superman that can operate 100 aplication at once?yer fone can, yerself cant :P

7. MOTOX (unregistered) posted on 06 Jan 2011, 20:47 0 0
It comes out around march most likely like the iphone as well as the other 4g phones....The 32 gig sd card, which at the moment i use what almost 16 gigs with crap loads of apps instead of music and none on the internal memory.....is because its not 16 gigs internal memory so they want to make you buy it.....but yes in ces they said its 1.2 ghz running at 1ghz but this can be altered by an update....not to mention its already above and beyond like a tegra 2....it can do much the same, just maybe a little less graphics.....
55. pedromartinez (unregistered) posted on 04 Feb 2011, 13:28 0 0

The question I have about this phone is when you record in high def, can you edit and send it to a family or friend as a mms? My droid incredible cant only emails... I cant even send a 10 sec video to anyone with high def.
18. LionStone posted on 07 Jan 2011, 13:00 0 0
I think the only way you can is to get an app that will compress it down to a smaller file. Yea, that's the problem with getting a high-end smartphone...I even tried to send a small video to my friend, but she couldn't open it on her phone thru her email acct because she doesn't have a smartphone...

they made a special wire or thing that you can buy so you can without having a dnla tv
its probably the same price of a HDMI cable

I don't have DLNA either. I was really looking forward to the kick stand and HDMI. 1 out of 2 sucks. Shame on both verizon and htc. Its a shame that it was built up so much and the only thing left out was the little things. Attention to detail will get you everywhere!

how many times do i have to say this, VERIZON DOES NOT MAKE THE PHONE. they sell it on their network. im getting this phone, dual core isnt everything its made out to be people. I love music therfore the 32gb, dolby digital sorround sound, and the nice display make it awesome for streaming music and watching live video. do you have any idea how amazing this phone will be when it is rooted and ROMed and is running 2.3?

"""In fact, it has that solid metallic feel to it that doesn't make you question its resistance to the elements – which of course, feels vastly improved to the plastic construction of the EVO 4G.""""
What? Doesn't this ALSO have a plastic construction? The only bits of metal seem to be that kickstand and that screen border.
It would have been nice to see a brushed aluminium unibody instead.

Tooooooo Biiiiggggg! How about a 3.7" size screen so adults can use it? Everything has gotten too big to carry in a pocket, especially for a business traveler. Seems like all the phones now are geared towards big screens for movie/tv/games. Whatever happened to the 'cellphone'? Don't get me wrong, I love all that stuff to, but stop with the 'mini' versions of tablets.
24. Lcurtis (unregistered) posted on 09 Jan 2011, 18:38 1 0
Dude I couldn't agree more. I like the coolness but lets get real a 4.3 inch screen is to much on a phone and if you like to use your phone as a dvd player to hook up to your tv then you're an even bigger idiot. Use a blue ray for watching moving and occasionally use your phone to view a few pics on the telly if you don't have 1000 other ways to view them.

I have a Mytouch 4G now, and I had a Vibrant before while my wife has a Evo. Honestly 4.0" is perfect. The 3.8" on the Mytouch 4G is pretty passable, but its funny to think that I actually notice a difference from 3.8" to 4.0" but it does feel significantly smaller. While my wifes 4.3" is like having a small tablet. On the other spectrum I have an Archos 101 10.1" tablet, which is great for browsing the internet, but honestly is a little too big to type on, emails take forever. Sadly options means that there is always room for error and refining. Maybe Apple has it right, only give their people one option, they cant really try something different and complain for more. BTW, my Mytouch 4G is probably the best phone I've owned. Hands down the best build quality and overall its an awesome phone. But 4.0" would make it better.

I agree...people love to complain. I'm excited that its an EVO-like device with a LTE chipset...that's enough for me. I don't need a dual-core processor or a 700MP front-facing camera. The highest resolution on a front-facing camera i believe is 2MP which is on its way out and people are already unsatisfied with it. smh.
19. Big D (unregistered) posted on 07 Jan 2011, 23:05 0 0
I wouldn't call it complaining but disappointed. I feel let down by a feature that I really wanted to see and had genuine interest in. Oh and thanks for the sandbox sarcasm , I would build my own phone if I could but as it turns out I'm just an average guy who really wanted an htc phone with an hdmi port on the best network around. Not being a dick as I do see your point but it's a lot like a super model with a leg missing. Mildly amusing but wouldn't you rather have the one with two legs? I'm out!
20. WolfManAZ (unregistered) posted on 08 Jan 2011, 11:22 0 0
I know some of the posters are upset that the phone did not meet the rumored specs or is dual core. However, based on the youtube videos and the speed of the phone tested via benchmarks against current phones. It blew past them. Granted it was not up against the LTE announced phones. Not everyone is going to like the big sized phones either. One thing to remember is with dual core phones, the batteries may not last very as long.
For me, the size looks awesome. It is about the biggest I would get in a phone. I am happy to hear that the front facing camera was true and the kickstand. Then you have that speaker under the kickstand. I am sure that listening to videos will be amazing on this phone.

this phone has better numbers than the G2 and the Nexus S. i'm liking it but i will wait til sprint gets its revised EVO version :) I was hoping they would invest in a screen thats as spectacular as the Super Amoled but with more natural looking colors than the super amoled.. we have the epic and im not really impressed. im really wishing i had got the Evo but it was for the wife and she loves it :P
22. Qui3tStorm posted on 08 Jan 2011, 20:44 0 0
This phones battery better out last the Evo & Incredible ... HTC has TERRIBLE battery life issues. With this phone being "dumbed down" compared to the other LTE devices the battery better be the strong suit for this phone.

Here I am, with my little HTC Aria and it's 600 Mhz processor, cruising along just fine, and I get amused hearing all the complaints from the "If it's not dual-core it's crap" crowd.
Guess what? My cell phone fits in my pocket. Comfortably. Can your phone do that?
30. Galen20K posted on 13 Jan 2011, 16:19 1 0
lol exactly! Although I do think the Aria's 3.2 inch screen is quite small I think 3.7/3.8 inch screens are the PERFECT size! : )

all you people who are complaining about it not having a dual core are lame. as of right now, android apps are made to access one core... NOT two. so even if it did have two what's the point?? yeah sure maybe in a little while when dual core is the norm, but not now. all you people need to think a lil bit before you open your mouth and make yourself look dumb

One of the biggest things I noticed with the Incredible and Eris was their Reception, it was poor. This may be a contributing factor to the battery life issue with HTC. A friend running a task killer almost get a healthy day out of his Incredible but the phone is always having to work harder then my Moto Droid X in the reception department... Just some thoughts... LTE will improve battery life on VZW phones once CDMA is phased out.
49. LionStone posted on 29 Jan 2011, 14:43 0 0
I've had no problems with Reception on my Incredible...the sound quality may not be that great (I came from a BB Bold and it's crystal clear) but it works just fine wrt reception.

personally this phone would be a lot better if it had a HDMI and a dual core..but i still think this phone is better then the droidX because mainly its from htc and htc offers many more options and just run there phones better but...this phone will have a lot of competition with the droid bionic in the end i think this phone is just as good as the evo 4g if not better, its 10x better then the droidX and will sell better and run better then the droid bionic

I don't care what all of the supporters say, this is not a new phone. This is a rehashed Evo with a poorly placed usb port and LTE, period. HTC should've pushed this device further, very disappointing...
50. Not Impresses (unregistered) posted on 30 Jan 2011, 15:21 0 1
BIG Miss HTC!!!
1) The kickstand covers the external speaker?!?!?
2) The charging port is in the worst possible place. So, I cant plug it while its propted up on its side, unless I drill a hole in my desk and feed the power cord up into the phone as I watch videos. MISS, MISS.
HTC's reason for these obvious design flaws...neccessary in order to avoid a possible antenna issue.
Release the lions!!
52. CBX133 (unregistered) posted on 31 Jan 2011, 03:25 0 1
I completely agree and then some! I was very excited for this phone and have even hyped it to other people as well. I feel that they completely missed the mark in a few key areas.
1. Can't charge while on the kickstand in landscape(Forces a dock which defeats the purpose. Poor placement of charge port.)
2. No HDMI is a bummer, DLNA is not as reliable from past experience.
3. No S-LCD, only TFT=FAIL.
No Dual-Core isn't the end of the world, but buying a device to last 20 months it will be behind very shortly. Im just very bummed about this phone. It's more like "It's not your dream phone, it's just 4G..".
56. pedromartinez (unregistered) posted on 04 Feb 2011, 13:33 0 0
I hadn't even noticed. That is a really good point! That is really retarded. Will the kick stand open in both directions?

Who needs dual core? The Thunderbolt scored higher quadrant score and gaming score than the dual core Droid Bionic. And FYI it's not the same old Snapdragon processor from last year in the Thunderbolt anyway, it's new. There will always be a "better" phone being released just beyond the horizon. If you wait for the Droid Bionic when it's available there will be a "better" phone around the corner. As for me I am buying this as soon as I can and not looking back. HTC Sense beats the pants off Motorola's Blur imo anyday.
