HTC One selling well, but not as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4

0. phoneArena 05 May 2013, 01:55 posted on

A survey of 20 AT&T and Sprint stores in Los Angeles reveals that the HTC One is selling well, but not as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4; despite a nearly two week head start for HTC's new Android flagship model, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has out sold its aluminum clad rival and has been returned fewer times than the HTC One has...

So providing valid arguments is considered as trolling now.. Haha butthurt fanboys logic! Next time, if you want to argue, at least come with something that make sense!

ah, SleepingOz, only a Samsung Fanboy like yourself would see the stand out features of the One as an amusing prospect. :P

there's been no evidence to support that the One is prone to signal drops anymore than the S4 is. plastic has it's disadvantages too while it doesn't feel as good and substantial as aluminum. plastic scuffs up very easily and takes fine scratches from just every day use and plastic melts. i've seen it after living in FL.

the ergonomics of either device is really a subjective matter but i know that the S4's plastic build isn't doing it any favors.

i have a couple of very good pairs of headphones for my devices but i don't pull them out every time i'm about to listen to something on my phone and Beats audio is actually a positive thing. sounds that come from my DNA sound much duller when the Beats is turned off.

only the Exynos versions will use the Wolfson, the S600 version uses Qualcomm's sound processor same as every other Qualcomm powered device.

not all actually. the UM sensor has it's trade offs. not everyone needs the larger sized 13MP shots all the time. most people will just use their phone's camera to upload to Facebook or Instagram both of which would compress 13MP photos anyway whereas the UP camera still takes 4MP shots. very good ones that are at least a little comparable to ones from the top smartphone sensors at that.

ZOE and the S4's camera tricks are all just gimmicks that hardly anyone will even think to use when the time comes, especially with Samsung since they have such an overwhelming amount of them.

The glossy polycarbonate body of the GSIV might not be immune against scratches but it will never be as bad as the aluminium body of the One. And you can always replace the back cover for like $3.
"Substantial" feel in hands is subjective but ergonomics ain't! And ergonomically speaking, lighter, more compact body is definitely a win.

"and plastic melts"

Polycarbonate ain't that cheap thin plastic that's used for plastic bags! In fact, polycarbonate is well known for having heat resistant and flame retardant properties.

"Beats audio is actually a positive thing. sounds that come from my DNA sound much duller when the Beats is turned off."

Beats Audio is just a gimmicky equalizer software, DSP is much better. I'm pretty sure HTC puposely reduce the quality of its sound on default settings to give Beats Audio some importance to audio-noobs hipsters. Like Sony with its Bravia Engine. These are well known commercial tricks.

"only the Exynos versions will use the Wolfson, the S600 version uses Qualcomm's sound processor same as every other Qualcomm powered device."

Well, idk about the qualcomm chip but I'm talking about the Wolfson DAC found in the i9500 model. It'll drive any headphones better than the One. I suspect the One to provide a louder sound but the Wolfson DAC will provide a fuller, richer, more balanced sound. No wonder why Wolfson DAC are so popular among audiophiles.

"not all actually. the UM sensor has it's trade offs. not everyone needs the larger sized 13MP shots all the time."

Again, how does this change the fact, proven by ALL comparisons, that the GSIV takes better photos(even against the recent camera update of the One, Seehttp://blog.gsmarena.com/htc-one-and-galaxy-s4s-cameras-go-head-to-head-after-software-intervention-check-out-the-samples/)? And I'm not talking about the MP count here! Some reviewers even go as far as to say that it's has the best camera in the android realm.
The only category where the One managed to win, is in low light environments.

Sprint phones aren't great at keeping a signal in general. Sprint's network uses a higher pitched signal that makes it difficult to pass through dense surfaces so yeah, i guess that's a factor when you're shopping for a phone on Sprint unfortunately. if you'll notice everybody with issues to report in that thread had a Sprint One.

based on what? i've owned plastic and aluminum phones alike and it's always the plastic ones that look crappier and crappier over time. both are really subjective but most people aren't going to mind the extra heft in exchange for something that feels more premium in the hand. even Samsung realizes this and are trying to shift to the use of aluminum or something of the like for their future handsets. i prefer the heftier, tank feel myself.

i don't buy it.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-melts/

my mom had a Droid Charge with a melted corner because she had it up in it's car dock too long with the FL sun out. i wouldn't take a chance with doing that with another Samsung.

i have DSP on my MAXX HD now because i'm running Pac Man. it doesn't sound any better than Beats Audio at all. you're pretty sure HTC purposely reduced the quality of its sound on default settings to give Beats Audio some importance to audio-noobs hipsters...yeah, you're gonna have to do better than that. you're just trying to knock Beats Audio for no good reason.

i know that but the majority of S4's are not powered by the Exynos 5. Exynos 5 powered S4's are even slightly more powerful than the One but these things aren't going to be a factor for most people.

again, not all. there's some comparisons i've seen that see it more like i do and that the One is the more balanced performer. yeah, the S4 takes better looking pictures when there's enough light but my original point still stands.

jeff mallari 4 days ago

"just tested my ROJERS Note 2 beside my ROJERS HTC One. My Note 2 was getting -97dBm and my HTC One was getting -106dBm. this was with both phones down on the table. when I picked up my HTC One it went to -111dBm so even with out blocking the white plastic on the lower left, the ONE already has weaker signal than the Note 2 and holding it in my left had does make it worse. I guess that's the reason Samsung sticks to using cheap plastic."

BrianBaker 1st May 2013, 03:44 AM

"Bars or no bars.. For me it was simple.. I didn't have 4G in areas with the One that I did with my other phone.. So it went back."

You asked for evidence, I provided evidence.. =]

I've also owned plastic and metal phones.
The stainless steel of my X1 was a scratch/dent magnet.. So was the aluminium unibody of my N8. My black GSII on the other hand, is still intact.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/melted-samsung-galaxy-s3-was-a-hoax

The owner of this GSIII(dilo2k10), admitted that his phone was microwaved by one of his friend. Try to put aluminium in a microwave for 30secs and see what happens. LMAO!

I'm pretty sure the Droid Charge isn't made from polycarbonate, dude. Polycarbonate's melting temp is about 230~260°C. Unless you live inside an active volcano, you will never encounter temperature this high!

Really, I'd really like to see those comparisons. Any link?

http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-s-iii/210167-gs3-signal-reception-joke-should-have-known-its-samsung.html

we can keep swapping stories of isolated incidents all you want to but that's all they're going to be, isolated incidents, not evidence of a design flaw. i've yet to see a review that indicates poor signal performance from the One.

well i guess it's just your word against mine but the reality is the majority is sick of the plastic.

i may just do some testing on that with an SIII backplate i have around here and get back to you.

http://www.droid-life.com/2013/04/23/samsung-galaxy-s4-review/

there was one more that specifically specified the One being the more balanced performer but i can't remember what it was...

-its not unibody you idiot, unibody is like lumia front and back no gap...htc one has a plastic gap its like aluminum back panel and front speaker cover and plastic gap all around.
-ergonomic as far as i know all of our customers find the s4 mo ergonomically sound than your beauty queen.
-shut up with your over rated beats audio have you check both audios? well not...i did and its not as loud and hard as you might think.check GSMArena audio comparison.
-answer to that wolfson ask beats if they are better.
-yeah coz 4 mega pixel or ultra pixel as you call it gets in more light because of lower pixels.Google that.
-recessed camera yeah because the module is thinner because its 4 ultra pixel...but not as thin as S4 with 13 mega module on it...do the math.
-they both have the same FOV but s4 has more detail on it.
-ZOE vs Story Album better.
-S3 have it S4 do have it and better..
-its like flipboard but flipboard on s4 is better because of airview.
-same.
-easiest is touchwiz period.
-and Finally all those features you call Gimmicks, which i think is what people do when their phone doesnt have those ability/features.
-not bragging but i own a mobile small shop that sells mobile phones here in hk honestly HTC ONE hardly sells and the S4 i am out of stock,re supplies tommorow.
-FACT S4 is wayyyyyyy betterrrrr.....

Well, in overall performance and based on previous success, GS4 have a huge lead. HTC one is in no need a bad device, indeed it is very capable on its own, but its no Samsung just yet. Galaxy series had been a success since the first one and it just works very well since. Where's your store in HK?

It is outselling the One because it doesn't have flaws that make you pull your hair out. Samsung flaws you can turn off or just ignore. HTC flaws you need an update that is 3 months, at least, away. Or can never be fixed, stupid button layout. You do the math.
