HTC Butterfly S now official with Snapdragon 600 and massive battery

Right on cue, the HTC Butterfly S was presented on stage today during the company's press event in Taiwan. And as the "S" in its title suggests, that's an upgraded variant of last year's HTC Butterfly, packing a faster processor, Ultrapixel camera, and a much, much larger battery.

How large, you ask? Well, HTC has managed to stuff a massive 3200mAh cell inside the Butterfly S. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the handset is thicker (10.6mm) and heavier (160 grams) than its predecessor due to the space taken up by the larger battery. 

Powering the HTC Butterfly S is a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 SoC, backed up by 2GB of RAM. Note that the HTC One has the same Qualcomm chip, but running at a lower frequency, so it may get outpaced by the Butterfly S on AnTuTu. 16GB of storage are on board, which can be expanded with a microSD card of up to 64GB. The screen is probably identical to that on the Butterfly, with a 5-inch diagonal size and resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels.

The HTC Butterfly S has adopted a few tricks from the maker's One flagship. For starters, we see that an Ultrapixel camera has been slapped on its back. Our guess is that the camera module would be similar, if not identical to the one found on the HTC One, so perhaps its performance won't be any different. Another handy feature we're happy to see are the dual front-facing BoomSound speakers for a richer experience while enjoying video or listening to music. 

To no surprise, the latest version of HTC Sense comes loaded on the HTC Butterfly S, packing goodies like HTC BlinkFeed and HTC Zoe. The exact Android version that will be loaded onto the smartphone isn't mentioned on the specs sheet, but we hope its Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. As the case is with all recent Android from HTC, 25GB of free Dropbox storage is provided for two years.

And that's the HTC Butterfly S for you, guys. The smartphone is due for a July release in its homeland of Taiwan where it will retail for about $766. Whether we'll ever see it land in the U.S. or Europe isn't yet known.
