Google's Matias Duarte is impressed with Facebook Home, takes a jab at OEMs

0. phoneArena 29 Apr 2013, 14:09 posted on

Facebook Home has gotten generally positive reviews, even if they always come with the caveat that not everyone likes Facebook to begin with. We've said that whether or not you like Facebook, the app itself is designed well, and marks an interesting new way for users to interact with their devices and with apps. And, it sounds like Android design guru Matias Duarte agrees with us...

you don't have to install facebook home to have chat heads. just download and install the newest version of facebook messager since it uses chat heads as well ;)

Yeah you are right. I realized this when I wanted Chatheads on my tablet, they are my favorite thing about the new updates. But since tablets can't have Facebook home yet, I just downloaded messenger and got them from that. Works great.

That should be a basic feature but it will never happen.

"Facebook Home has gotten generally positive reviews..."

Which is why it's sitting on two stars on the Play Store?

Edited. Play Store reviews don't matter to me. I don't really care if someone used something for 5 minutes then gave it a terrible Play Store review, that doesn't even get you past the "oh crap this is so new and weird" feeling before reviewing. Not to mention all of the general Facebook haters that vote it down just because they can.

I see your point, but in a lot of cases, the Play Store review is the first gateway to a product that the public sees. Having a 2 star review is a serious cause for concern for any application. While you do have to take it with a grain of salt, there is usually *some* merit to the reviews, especially when there are so many of them.

I understand what you're saying, but the truth is there are many times where professional reviewers praise something and the public hates it. In the end, if the public doesn't like it, all the great professional reviews mean nothing. While this isn't about phones or even tech, the movie Drive was hailed by nearly all critics, whereas the general public hated it.

The thing is you can't really say with any certainty how long the people in the Playstore reviewed it for. To simply discount them without knowing that is rather unprofessional.

@MichaelHeller

You are so right. I am sick and tired of all the kneejerk reaction reviews on the Play Store, and having people cite them as if they're really reliable... Also, the FUD spread by all the teenagers who are arrogant to think that somehow their daily lives earn the attention of a multi-billion dollar company is hillarious.

You don't like Facebook Home. Fine. I don't like it all that much either. But that doesn't mean it's bad.

Dear Michael, I have to be honest, I wasn't a big fan when you started here, but the more the time goes, the more I appreciate you, I read you as someone that experiments technology and always see both sides of things, not only one, I can only wish that there where more writers like you...

I'm curious as to how that's a "Jab" at OEM's? to me, he is saying that he is impressed at how polished it is, and being 'surprised' it didn't come from a hardware manufacturer.

If he had said he was "surprised" that it didn't come from a hardware manufacturer, that wouldn't be a jab. But, that's not what he said. He praised FB Home's design and made a point that it did not come from a hardware manufacturer. As if to say that software companies understand UI design better than hardware companies. Facebook is a software company, so is Google. HTC, Samsung, and Apple are far more known as hardware companies than software, even if they all do make software.

I love FB that's already integrated into my WP. No need to modify or change anything on my phone.
