Google updates Galaxy Nexus specs, may have killed 32GB model

0. phoneArena 19 Nov 2011, 12:20 posted on

Google quietly updated the specs for the Galaxy Nexus on the official website, the good news is that the official specs now show a bigger battery, but there is possible bad news in the changes as well...

This is a discussion for a news. To read the whole news, click here

Well this could go two ways! They will release the 16GB model december 8th and delay the 32GB two months later smart move if you think about it. But, another example of verizon sh*tting on verizon customers! No surprise though. Anybody think the RAZR is just as good of a phone?

+1

That would be a terrible move because by then I'll have just decided to purchase the razr. Sorry, 16 GB of non expandable storage may be a deal breaker for me.

The Nexus is a POS here\'s why

1. it\'s late as hell by that I mean the SG3 is about to be announced real soon along with the tegra 3 devices and s4 equips.

2. the hardware is a POS 4460 with it\'s old architect gpu is just that OLD. compared to the powerVR on the new Iphones it\'s a joke.

3. The new razr bench mark was only 2500 compared to the gs2 3400+ on stock unrooted. So how much can the nexus be I doubt it can beat the gs2. Also don\'t give me that crap about the screen resolution because it has been said time and time again that it\'s only a 5% difference.

4. When review on youtube compared to browser experience between the razr, gs2, and the 4s the razr was like studdering when panning, pinch to zoom etc... so I bet the nexus which uses to ti omap 4460 is almost the same.

5. the new android OS while looking new and nice is probably full of bugs

6. Verizon is selling this POS for $300 plus tax and activation fee so that\'s like $400+ you could get better phones for a fraction of that price

7. No gorilla glass IDC what test they do with this new glass it has not been proven by day to day use that it is good

wow I can go on and on but whatever...

1) the SGS3 is not even in RUMOR MILL, much less an official announcement. Fat chance of seeing it in the states by summer at the earliest.

2) The OMAP uses the POWERVR GPU which is the strongest gpu on the market today.

3) the Razr's benchmark has NOTHING to do with the Nexus. If you look at the tegra3 benchmark thread, it shows the actual nexus bechmarks as slightly higher than the SGS2. Why? Because ICS is hardware accellerated, gingerbread is not.

4) you keep talking about the razr like its the nexus.. its not. get over it.

5) show me proof.

6) Verizon wont be the only avenue for the phone, they just have an exclusivity period. The Tmo version, if released, will probably be the same price as the SGS2 (230) and u can get plan thats less than half of VZW for full unlimited 4G.

7) They have already confermed destruction resistant glass. There are other avenues for glass than Corning.

You could go on, but first you should do research.

I'm sure Samsung is using a Corning product, after all they have a joint venture with them. Do you really think that they will be using something inferior to Gorilla glass, which they are selling to their competitors? In fact, I'd bet money that the glass on the Nexus is better than Gorilla glass, which is just the marketing name for one of their many lines of glass products.

Samsung also makes their chips and screens in house, but went with another brand of chip (OMAP instead of exynos), so yea its completely possible.
Different brands dont necessarily mean inferior. It could be a test device for that new dragon glass or whatever its called, or someone we havent heard of yet, so they see real world use on a wide scale. Corning said it wasnt gorilla glass though.

As long as its some kind of durable glass, I'm happy.

Now if you are a Verizon customer whose contract expires very soon. Then you should get the nexus, if you've just got a Razr or GALAXY Sll, then it would be stupid to trade it for a nexus. When you bring in the fact of the PENTILE matrix the result is interesting

Razr: 209ppi
Sll: 217ppi
Nexus: 220ppi

So,all 3 have more or less exactly the same pixel density, the best AMOLED screen is on the Sll.

Updates are not an issue as the Sll and Razr will both receive it.

The design of all 3 is amazing with the best probably being the Nexus

For benchmark people: Get the Sll
For fans of sexy and premium design: Get the Razr
For fans of sexy design and unskinned android: Get the Nexus

If you just got an Sll or a Razr, don't be jealous if i had a choice between all 3 then the RAZR is the way to go.

For heavens sake! Pentile screens do not reduce apparent resolution by 1/3!

Stop reducing that because when you see the screen, your eyes do not see if it is one or two green subpixels, specially at that resolution!

Phonearena did a unbiased review on the technologies and that backs me up! I have a Samsung Galaxy S I and i've never seen any disadvantages to it.

I\'m just saying that people will jump on the 16GB phone cause they want it that bad. So it will probably sell like crazy! But some people will hold out for the 32GB and thats the phone thats most desired. Its like releasing the 16GB phone will ease people off their sh#t a little bit. Cause lets face it A LOT of people who dont know much about phones will be talked into the 16GB saying its plenty! But people that know their sh#t will wait. So its a good move cause they will doulbe dip profits on both phones! I really hate verizon over all they have done this year so I was being sarcastic about the good move. It\'s chicken sh#t if you ask me!

People here sure are easy to impress just look at how yesterdays top android phones are just begging for an update to a new OS. The nexus is a fail:

that gpu while is a powerVR is OLD architect just clocked up. Come JAN and a slew of new phone will be out that will just laugh at the 540.

that great screen you all are drolling for well again it's pentile and i'm very sure samsung has a sRGB HD screen already made and is ready for the gs3.

the ompa 4460 will never be as smooth as an exynos or a 4s when using day to day.

like many have said the nexus is a developers phone not a cutting age device so i don't get all the hoorars

Looks like my decision to go with the RAZR was a good one. When there is a larger pool of ICS/quad core/LTE/720p/4.3+ inch display handsets, then it will be time to think about my next purchase. At the moment, I am loving the RAZR's features and its blazing FAST LTE connections. 26 Mbps down anyone? This is faster than my cable modem service with Comcast.

Mucking the specs? No they're not. They're just not as impressive as everyone built them up to be.
Delaying it? When has it been delayed? A launch date hasn't been annouced. No launch date, not delayed.
Plus 16GB is a lot! I know ya'll probably don't even come closed to using that much. Stop complaining about little specs. It only matters how it functions overall which will probably be near perfect compared to many androids.

Of course, cloud music isn't always accessible in areas without service or if you're traveling by plane.

16GB isn't that much. It doesn't take that much to fill it up. I'd be fine with 16GB if i had the option of adding more with an SD card. However, it's not.

Saying there's going to be a 16/32GB version and then coming back and saying "just kidding it's only 16GB" is mucking with it. Now, that may have been Google, Verizon, or Sammy doing it. We don't know. But that's a deal breaker for some.

Has a date officially been announced? No it hasn't. However, it DOES look like Verizon found something it wasn't happy with and is going thru more testing. This phone was announced in October with a vague timeframe of November given. Then that went back to "by the end of the year." We keep see it getting later and later while the rest of it happened.

Slipped launch date may be debatable, but frying them for a bad US launch isn't.

well, there still is a 16 and 32 gb version. VZW never confirmed one or the other, so can we really get mad at them for that? A web page isnt an official confirmation. It still sucks though.

with G-music you can dl a bunch of songs to your card if you know your going to be out of service for a while. takes a little preplanning, but its not hard to do.

the last time i actually filled my card i think is when i tried to record a Shinedown concert in full. Didnt quite work. :) It got a lot of static from too much noise in the video so i deleted it anyways :(.
They really need to work on how phones pick up sound for video since my actual camera can record a concert in near perfect sound.. but i digress.

I have to agree, I'll be keeping the phone for at least the 20 month upgrade cycle, and if I'm still limited to 16 GB when Jellybean arrives, I don't know how well the phone will handle. Not to mention I might want to push off my music onto the phone, and that's 18 GB right there.

We'll see what happens, but a 16 GB Nexus is not enough, even if they knock it down to $250.

LTE uses a sim, but you can't make phone calls on verizon's LTE yet, that's why they're all CDMA/LTE hybrids (that and the whole 3G network being CDMA) so for all intents and purposes Verizon doesn't use Sim Cards in the sense that getting an unlocked phone will have any real functionality on Verizon's Network. Though yes LTE is a GSM based technology, and all Verizon LTE phones have sims (more accurately I believe all new ones use Micro Sims) So if you do so you better be sure that everywhere you go has LTE, or you have wifi and a google voice account everyone knows.

I wonder if this is Verizon's crappy way of making up for the lost profit of bloatware. Sure, you can have your bloat-free Nexus, but we're charging $300 for the 16 GB model while everything else at that price has at least 32 GB.

I wouldn't put it past them. I love Verizon's service, but they're definitely eying the bottom line, not the user.

Or my other conspiracy theory - that out of fairness to the manufacturers, Verizon can't have a clear-cut #1 phone. The Razr, Rezound and Nexus would each have a clear disadvantage.

Friggin' Verizon! I have no doubt this is their doing. As much as I enjoy their service, I hope they never get a Nexus branded device to corrupt again. The Nexus had been my front runner for a while; right now it's in 3rd place for me behind the Razr and the Rezound.
There are already people receiving their Galaxy Nexus phones across the pond (even "The Woz" got one) and for these kinds of changes to be made now after debut just seems like a Big Red slap in the face.

I think I'll just hold off on any upgrades for now until I'm off of contract this spring. (Might be time for a new carrier)

Has it been confirmed there is no SD card support for the Nexus yet? Or will it be like the Xoom where it's unlocked later with software? Cause in the introduction video when they insert the battery it looks like there is an SD card slot with a dummy installed, so to me I'd think the latter would happen.

Lol, Verizon has clout but not that much. This is more than likely a decision by Samsung and Google. Notice Google just launched their Music with cloud saving feature, what better way to show it off than to utilize their new Flagship ICS device? I swear sometimes people need to slow down and think, besides why would you really need to fill a device with that much data to carry around with you? The cloud is what is going to be google's next push watch and see. I've got a 16 card in my phone right now and it's mainly music still only half of it left to use, if you have more than that in music, there is no possible way you can listen to all of that in a week. You people can say all you want, that is BS that would actually to feasibly listen to anywhere 16 gigs worth of music. But you know people like having excess for whatever reason, which is why we tend to see people having yard and stoop sales in the summer all that crap you thought you needed but obviously didn't.

Perhaps if you like having movies, wait a minute...unless you plan on watching those movies repeatedly then storing them on your phone is a bit hmmm, wasteful when you can stream. Even if you change it out every few days, you can do the same with music on the 16GB memory and stop complaining like you actually need 40GB of space.

I'm sure I will get loads of negs and complaints but I bet it's mostly from people who like to be right about everything and truly know what I am saying is truth. Truth stings and usually makes people defensive...go ahead give it a shot.
Sure some people might legitimately have uses for over 16GB of space, but really the one's complaining are just doing it because it's something to complain about. I only hate the fact that the memory isn't expandable optionally, I prefer that to being locked into iDevice type of memory limit. These Android phones starting to look more and more like Apples' products...Droid Razr non user removable battery, Nexus Prime non upgradeable memory, I wonder what's next? Hey they could be pulling an Apple-esque move and releasing 16GB now and 5 months later a 32GB version of the same damn phone...hey who knows it might work. Lmao!

no negs here.....everything your saying is true in my eyes....but its just the principal of the whole thing....like me i just rather have 32GB...just because...if i use it or not...like now i have a 32GB card in my phone...only used 10GB and i know i can delete half the crap on there....with both netflix and hulu plus on my phone...its not needed what-so-ever but its still WANTED....
