Google talks with Dish to start its own mobile carrier

0. phoneArena posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:00

We've heard this before as more of an unsubstantiated rumor that Google wanted to start its own wireless carrier, but now word is coming out that looks to be more concrete on the subject. Apparently, Google has been in negotiations with Dish Network, which point to a very real possibility of Google as a mobile carrier...

Last time they talked about this they said it was going to be free. Who knows though. Really I doubt it...

4. DaNTRoN posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:10 6

Hell even if they did it at cost. If Google makes it money from data mining, and they can get, possibly, hundreds of millions of Americans, and probably other countries at some point, using their service they would still boost revenue. Kind of like Google fiber.

24. Dr.Phil posted on 15 Nov 2012, 21:21 6

I doubt it would be free, but what they may do is finally give us the option paying $30-$50 a month for a plan and having a unsubsidized phone. Sort of like what they have over in Europe with their cellular plans. Instead of buying a subsidized phone on a 2 year contract with excessive costs associated with it, imagine buying an unsubsidized phone with low monthly costs. Normally, people would be turned off by this idea because unsubsidized phones normally cost $500 and up, but Google has shown us they can create a high-end phone at a $300 price without a contract. So, you would only pay a little more than you would by buying a subsidized phone but save on your monthly fees. I think this is the route Google would go if it does get into the cellular business, and I'm all for it.

I think google would be better off buying Tmobile or a regional carrier and expanding. I don't see much benefit partnering with Dish based on their current state.

34. remixfa posted on 16 Nov 2012, 00:13 4

We actually agree on something..

yup, the world ends in 2012.

35. AWiseGuy posted on 16 Nov 2012, 00:18 3

I had the same thought, lol.

3. bigdawg23 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:09 1

This could be interesting however Dish would be a bad partner. I know Dish has some spectrum but they are not fairing to well in their current business. How's that Blockbuster purchase working??

5. pongkie posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:16 4

I heard their data services would be free a long as you use google services. they even testing it to other countries.

10. Zero0 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:01 1

Probably won't happen in the US. It is likely a violation of net neutrality rules.

20. rsxl5 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:42 5

Well, if rectangle can be patented in US that one should be possible as well ;P

6. huypaulha94 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:18 10

Why didn't Google buy T-mobile??? I'm sure that would have been better than the whole AT&T-mobile catastrophe!

7. aikonix posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:33 9

and name it G-Mobile ;)

11. blackspot posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:05 5

I honestly kind of like that name better -- G-Mobile

14. AWiseGuy posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:09 7

And they should rename the phone's tethering app to "G-spot!" On second thought, they might want to pass on that one.

Either way, I am all for your idea. Knowing Google's business model, they'd probably provide excellent service for a lower price than the competition. At worst, it would be superior service at the same price, so I see this as a win-win. Count me in if it ever becomes a thing.

22. minteke posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:48 2

...or T-Google :-)
Or even T-Mogul !

31. Berzerk000 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 23:52 2

Yes. Please.

37. cncrim posted on 16 Nov 2012, 02:03 1

The reason is if google buy tmobile then the data service wont be cost at low as 30 or maybe as low as 20 a month....... google can go low on mobile data and make it up in ad.

Google take in over your information & selling it not like Verizon & at&t aren't doing it but them knowing where you live, what you navigate, they will know your exact location at all times! Who you call & text. Sorry Google I will not sign up for that I'll stick to my WP now.

9. ghostnexus posted on 15 Nov 2012, 19:52 5

I don't care if they know where I live or go if it saves me money i'll take it, I got nothing to hide.

12. AWiseGuy posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:06 2

Do you realize that ALL of that can be done now without a Google-owned carrier? Anything you fear Google can learn about you, so too can Verizon or any other carrier. Best of luck with your Windows phone, as if it's impossible for that to be used to track you. I think you ought to loosen the tinfoil hat a little. It seems a bit tight.

13. Alantef posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:09 1

Just buy T-Mobile!!!!

15. Non_Sequitur posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:12 2

This. Will. Be. Awesome.
Google wanted to make unlimited data $10 per month, originally. Also, Google will have control over all the updates.
DO IT
PLEEEEEASE

16. AWiseGuy posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:15

A carrier that we could be reasonably certain would NOT put bloatware on its Android phones and, judging by Google's past, would provide great service at low cost? Count. Me. In.

17. parkwaydr posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:17 4

hmm, i wonder if they would carry the iphone?

(before i get bombarded with hate, im ony joking ppl.)

27. BadAssAbe posted on 15 Nov 2012, 22:01 4

Google would but i doubt Apple would allow a google logo on its phones

36. AWiseGuy posted on 16 Nov 2012, 00:19 1

Good, it would be terrible for Google to defile its own name like that. *shudders*

18. Hammerfest posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:20 2

Shut the fruck up and take my money... (because you already have all of my personally identifying information...)

Seriously however, I would jump to an elGoog wireless carrier if it existed...

19. ElektronicGeek91 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 20:27 3

egoogle will make a good phone company, ths because they have the brains and creativity to do it.

23. droiddomination posted on 15 Nov 2012, 21:13 1

i just wish att would go back to cingular. i loved that company and the logo. google cell company would be cool also, call it the nexus network. i would be scared that they would undercut so badly that verizon and att would not be able to compete.

26. BadAssAbe posted on 15 Nov 2012, 21:59 1

Forget AT&T and Verizon
AT&T is overpriced
Verizon and sprint are still using CDMA(not sure whats its called), which no one else in the world uses

25. CRICKETownz posted on 15 Nov 2012, 21:59 1

mm...i'll pass. Google has a good amount of smart ideas, but not everyone is cut out for a wireless network. a $10 unlimited data plan looks good on paper, but that's not condusive to growing the bottom line which isn't condusive to a successful business.

28. MartyK posted on 15 Nov 2012, 23:18 3

There business model is in advertisement, and data gathering; I would leave my carrier in a heart beat if Google have their own network and the price is right..

30. MC1123 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 23:23

WHAT?! even though im shock! but i actually predict this one coming!

a carrier with no iPhone, Windows Phone and BlackBerry Phones thats for sure!

38. AWiseGuy posted on 16 Nov 2012, 02:52 1

Google has always sought to bring its stuff to any platform it can, regardless of its status as a competitor. I'm pretty sure they'd be willing to carry non-Android devices without hesitation. After all, they aren't an insignificant proportion of the market. At least, not right now.

32. Berzerk000 posted on 15 Nov 2012, 23:54 2

I would love this. Google should buy T-Mobile (like others stated above), and they could increase their network expansion greatly. A carrier with only Nexus-grade devices... It's a wonderful thing.

39. ronjr123 posted on 16 Nov 2012, 07:28 1

Where do I sign? Bye bye Verizon. One can only dream.

40. infinitemethod posted on 16 Nov 2012, 09:53

Oh, cool. When does Skynet go online? I'm a huge fan of Google, but they are Skynet and nobody can tell me different. Where is Linda Hamliton when we need her?

41. tremzee posted on 16 Nov 2012, 11:16

it will be a big hit specially people will be rescue from Verizon and at&t expansive data plans and they could safe there money.
Keep it up Google i will be haply join google mobile.

42. hornetmx posted on 16 Nov 2012, 11:40

For sure, Google is not interested making money. Funny how people think Sprint and T-Mobile charge less because they are nice. It's because THEY HAVE TO or they wouldnt have any customers!!!!! They only wish they could charge as much as AT&A and Verizon. I think this is more of a leverage move on Google's part to compete with Apple. They are basically saying "you better shows us some love ($$$) or else.

43. Jyakotu posted on 16 Nov 2012, 15:46 1

Every business, whether we like it or not as consumers, are in the business to make money. Google makes majority of its money on advertisements. Sprint and T-Mobile may charge less rates, but see how their network expansion has taken a hit because of it. People may hate on Verizon and AT&T for their prices, but you truly get what you pay for. Verizon has the largest 4G LTE network in the US right now and AT&T is catching up greatly. Sprint barely has 4G LTE and T-Mobile won't have it until 2013.

Google would be no different. If anything, I could see them being a MVNO, but not a full blown national wireless carrier.

44. CRICKETownz posted on 18 Nov 2012, 22:36

to think that Google will come into the wireless game & takeover is just wishful thinking for loyal Google fans only. the wireless industry is very aggressive & very costly for network build out...so the fantasy of paying tracfone prices w/Verizon level reliability is about as fictitious as the Easter Bunny. the price may start out right but in the long run if they're going to remain in operation as a wireless carrier that is bound to change. the consumer logic is driven by how much they think something should cost w/no regard to what it actually costs behind-the-scenes for you to do something as simple as sending a text message. that function is simple but everything in place that makes that function happen isn't so simple & isn't very cheap. to expect BMW quality on a Dotson budget has never made sense to me but seems to be the mind frame of most wireless customers.
