Google releases Tango app for Android ahead of the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro's launch
Ahead of the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro's launch, Google has published the free Tango app on the Play Store. In case you haven't heard of Tango or forgotten what it's about, this is a neat spacial detection technology by Google that makes augmented reality tricks possible. It relies on a set of specially optimized cameras to capture a virtual map of your surroundings and realistically position imaginary objects around them, as seen through the display of your smartphone. The Phab 2 Pro, which will be released next month, will be the first consumer device to support the technology. But Google decided to release the Tango app earlier, possibly to have the time to improve it for the Phab 2 Pro's launch.

Anyhow, the Tango app, which is compatible only with Project Tango devices, acts as a hub for specialized content. It will help users launch their favorite AR experiences and discover new ones. The screenshots hint towards some interesting stuff, such as virtual works of art placed inside your living room, and a 3D alien planet experience. Things certainly look promising! Alas, no other devices using Project Tango tech have been announced, other than the upcoming Phab 2 Pro and the developer tablet Google released a while ago. We'll see how the technology evolves in the months after Lenovo's device has been on sale and Google has filled up the Tango app with fresh content.
