0. phoneArena posted on 16 Feb 2012, 22:45

With a German court ruling that Motorola had infringed on Apple's "slide-to-unlock" patent, Google has filed with the USPTO for a system of unlocking a smartphone or tablet by using a dragging an icon from one end of the screen to another while opening an a or calling a specific contact...

Stupid Apple and their ridiculous patents. Now it has forced other companies to patent retarded things to prevent being future litigation. In the end, the consumers all lose. Products are more expensive to cover legal fees and less money towards R&D.

Apple are whores like that.

Won't that quality as slide to unlock? If the lock screen can use different passwords to perform different quick access settings it may be more interesting I would like if they had the user interface on there but again dammed worthless piece of paper only to fight some war.

Hope I see some good implementation anyways and fast. I like my lock screen

it seems like it would… i cant believe they award this patent to google or the one to apple… they should award patents on specific designs such as apples rectangle or googles series of circles rather than a general slide to unlock or security based unlocking….

4. biophone posted on 16 Feb 2012, 23:37 6

That what i have been saying all along. Functionalties are to broad design should be whats patented.

5. Lucas777 posted on 16 Feb 2012, 23:57 2

well certain functionalities can be patented… just not ones that say "swipe to unlock"… i think functionalities like powerful photoediting tools can certainly be patented…

6. biophone posted on 17 Feb 2012, 00:03 5

Unless its super specfic im against it. All platforms should be able to photoedit but they should look different.

Indeed no more vague stuff, and no more stuff based on real stuff and no more patents without a actual working model. Because if I say I can use a method to make my battery better I must provide a working battery with better life

23. Lucas777 posted on 17 Feb 2012, 18:24

thats why i said powerful. i mean more like photoshop… although i do believe tech such as red eye removal can be patented.. cause if i created that, i would want it patented but i would also agree to be forced to option it for a standard license.. that way it wouldnt be all this suing stuff..

25. tedkord posted on 17 Feb 2012, 20:51

A specific way of removing red eye should be patentable, but not just the action of removing it. If someone else comes up with a different algorithm for removing the red, that should also be patentable.

There shouldn't be design patents. Trademarks and patents are different and a smartphone that's square with rounded edges isn't exactly new. Apple reporposes technology well, capacitive touch screens with gestures had been around for years, but they found a way to put it in a smartphone and make it intuitive. Apple makes a great product and they would make a fortune without Patent Trolling. Patent Trolling just builds a very negative image for the company in the cell community.

The slide to unlock patent by Apple actually mentioned "Unlocking phone by using a touch screen and moving finger from one place to the other"

How else are you meant to unlock a phone?!

15. troutsy posted on 17 Feb 2012, 05:35

Apple's patent actually solves a problem on touch screen phones, "Pocket dialing". I personally don't think that they are getting enough protection against other companies using slide-to-unlock methods. The validity of Apple's patent is questionable at best, but somehow they were awarded it and other phone manufacturers / OS'es should be trying to answer your question.

Apple's next press release, "We're giving up on protecting our IP to preserve profit margins and market share because people say we're mean and call us trolls."

17. quakan posted on 17 Feb 2012, 08:25 1

I guess just tap the screen and type a code? The patent is dumb anyways.

20. shafboy posted on 17 Feb 2012, 10:49

Yeah I know what you mean, but common, look at the Galaxy Nexus, that is sliding the screen from one place to the other, yet it is original. Look at Windows Phone, that is sliding the screen.

This process doesn't sound that bad. I wouldn't mind having more enhanced lockscreen functionality. The slide to unlock lawsuits are bulls**t though.

Why the f..k, there is an iPhone picture with some extra buttons on it, used as an example for a Giggle patent? That's pathetic!

12. protozeloz posted on 17 Feb 2012, 05:23 8

Are you a retard? Can't you see that's a G one?

22. LoneShaolin posted on 17 Feb 2012, 12:58 1

That's Apple fanboys or you. Anything with a rounded off rectangle and a big round button "must be an iPhone" regardless if it is or isn't. Maybe they should sue for that big central button too...... -_-

TAKE THAT APPLE it would have been good if Google filled a patent for that pull down notification bar. Even Apple copy and luckily get away with it

13. protozeloz posted on 17 Feb 2012, 05:24 1

Dont give them ideas to patent

18. Nicksully23 posted on 17 Feb 2012, 08:35

They did Patent it.

And then Apple will copy what Google have patent like the way THEY stole THE ANDROID NOTIFICATION. FCK APPLE

I think the Sense 3.0 and up weather lockscreen is about the best lockscreen there is. It has shortcuts, you can open to the homescreen, and it gives an awesome weather animation.
