it seems like it would… i cant believe they award this patent to google or the one to apple… they should award patents on specific designs such as apples rectangle or googles series of circles rather than a general slide to unlock or security based unlocking….

well certain functionalities can be patented… just not ones that say "swipe to unlock"… i think functionalities like powerful photoediting tools can certainly be patented…

thats why i said powerful. i mean more like photoshop… although i do believe tech such as red eye removal can be patented.. cause if i created that, i would want it patented but i would also agree to be forced to option it for a standard license.. that way it wouldnt be all this suing stuff..

A specific way of removing red eye should be patentable, but not just the action of removing it. If someone else comes up with a different algorithm for removing the red, that should also be patentable.

There shouldn't be design patents. Trademarks and patents are different and a smartphone that's square with rounded edges isn't exactly new. Apple reporposes technology well, capacitive touch screens with gestures had been around for years, but they found a way to put it in a smartphone and make it intuitive. Apple makes a great product and they would make a fortune without Patent Trolling. Patent Trolling just builds a very negative image for the company in the cell community.

The slide to unlock patent by Apple actually mentioned "Unlocking phone by using a touch screen and moving finger from one place to the other"

How else are you meant to unlock a phone?!

Apple's patent actually solves a problem on touch screen phones, "Pocket dialing". I personally don't think that they are getting enough protection against other companies using slide-to-unlock methods. The validity of Apple's patent is questionable at best, but somehow they were awarded it and other phone manufacturers / OS'es should be trying to answer your question.

Apple's next press release, "We're giving up on protecting our IP to preserve profit margins and market share because people say we're mean and call us trolls."

Yeah I know what you mean, but common, look at the Galaxy Nexus, that is sliding the screen from one place to the other, yet it is original. Look at Windows Phone, that is sliding the screen.
