Google introduces the "Next Dimension" of Maps coming to Android and iOS

0. phoneArena 06 Jun 2012, 12:52 posted on

Google just concluded it's Google maps press meet up, and they demonstrated improved offline maps, backpack-based Street View image gathering, and of course a new 3D version of maps...

Yes, this is true. If you go tohttp://maps.nokia.com/ and choose "3D View", you will be able to adjust the viewing angle from the default 90° downwards as if you were flying over the terrain.

If you also choose to get direction, you can "Take a 3D flight along your route".

Pretty cool stuff!

Lol, now Google is DEFINITELY like "in b4 Apple."

It sounds like Maps will continue to get better and better. I just hope that the 3D maps will be more detailed than a few polygons. The Arch here in Saint Louis is NOT a gigantic square slab.

on the flip side I was buzzing over DC in Google maps and the 3d is pretty darn detailed for the main buildings in the capital. even has the trees and fountains in 3d.

This is great. But i was thinking that it might help video game developers and movie makers if the data was free to use in that way.

Apples dropping of Google maps, the defacto standard in maps for zillions (already with street view, sat view, indoor view and now 3d) is further proof of Apple wasting money and resources on iCrap that does not need to be controlled by them!

This maps move by Apple should piss of more and more of the herd who are already seeing how Apple uses and abuses them year after year with incremental upgrades and less features than the competition....

google maps on iOS is just basic map services. Its not 1/10th of what we get on Android. You know its bad when TomTom is getting away with charging $60 bux for an iOS app.. and making tons of money on it.

The good news, if you read, is that Google will now be free to make a separate app instead of all the built in iOS BS that they had to deal with before, which means if they wanted to, they could give iOS users full G-Maps like Android users have, and beat apple at their own game.. on their own OS. That is unless Apple locks them out, which I kinda see coming.

What I would like to see is Google Maps showing the elevation of streets. I live in a hilly city and would like to see a 3D relief map feature.

Somehow this potential clash of these two tech titans is not the biggest form of competition today. Can Jonathan Quick bring the Kings the cup (probably the most unlikely playoff runs in any sport in at least the last 20 years) and pull off something the Great one couldn't or will Martin Brodeur bring the Devils back from a three game deficit. Thumbs up for a Kings sweep ending tonight thumbs down for the Devils prolonging their probable loss of the cup (Thumb positions were assigned randomly).
