Google could be working on Paranoid Android-like pie menu

0. phoneArena 17 Mar 2014, 10:37 posted on

It looks like Google might be working on an improved gesture interface with pie controls for touchscreen devices, as the giant recently filed a patent application with the USPTO for a user interface with radial menus. Google's invention is a semi-circular context menu, which comes with several configurable items, which can be started via a simple gesture. This interface concept is similar to the ones, present in Samsung's Air Command, Paranoid Android's Pie Controls, and the Quick Controls in AOSP's browser...

It is but mainly for tablets and devices that aren't for 1 handed use. Not super innovative but at least it should make it easier for nav (maybe).

This technology plus floating touch tech could be very useful. I had tested PIE controls on Sola with floating touch and the experience is great. Its like having ARI like the ones on Heavy Rain.

Google must patent all android's killer features, but open for only android OHA and developer communities. So that evil companies like apple and microsoft cant rip off and copy them and call their own 'innovations'. Beat them in their own game. Then see how they run out of features.

That's not the point. And FYI, Google did copy (depending on what your concept of "copy" is) some of the KitKat features from ios.

Camera shortcut on lock screen
Swype left - search
Wallpaper shown clearly under the app draw
Transparent status bar

Want me to go on (non-KitKat related)?

1.Camera shortcut on lockscreen was since gingerbread on android phones, thats just made a bit easier and intuitive.
2. What swipe left search? Google now lol since when was this copy. Please explain this one.
3. Wallpaper thing copied from whom and this could be fixed with third party launcher.
4. Again Transparent bar copied from whom. This feature was present from 4.0 ICS samsung phones.
5. Go on whining and nitpicking small features when ms/fruit are copying hugely.

1. Did not exist. Camera can also be accessed from the lock screen in WP7.
2. Swipe left from home - search interface. Existed in older versions of IOS.
3. Wallpaper is shown under the apps in the app drawer - which is also in IOS.
4. TouchWiz is not Android. I'm talking about Google here, not Samsung.

5. Right.

Two-line email preview in Gmail - was present since in Iphone email program since 2007.
6. Quick/canned response feature - Apple had the same in their email program.
7. Additional features in notifications bar

Keep in mind that initially, my point was that Google is no less evil than Apple/MS.

I remember seeing the Camera shortcut on custom lock screens for Android years ago. Wallpaper shown under the app draw. Who cares about that one when you can change the entire look and feel under Android. You can even make Android look and feel like iOS 7 or WP if you want to. Swype left from the home screen to search or pressing and hold the home button. Well if you want to talk about simple search sure okay I will give that to Apple and Siri. But if you even looked at Google Now, then you would know that Google's Now goes way beyond Siri and uses cards and learns your needs.
If you want someone to go on with what iOS has taken from Android like drop down notifications, quick settings, VPN, Wireless updates. You talk about things on the lockscreen, but Android had custom lock screens years ago, and they still do today. So please tell me about all the innovations that Apple has come up with lately on their own.

"I remember seeing the Camera shortcut on custom lock screens for Android years ago."

Which may have been in 2012/custom ROMS, etc.

After reading your entire comment, I can say that you've missed the point completely. So please read the entire thread and then come back.

Google has been copying since way back when the company was a startup. They copied Overture's sponsored search results and pay-per-click advertisements (that's their core business model if you didn't know) invented by Bill Gross.

Thank tiny little baby Christmas Jesus in the manger... this will be amazing! I've been saying they needed gesture controls forever and I can't believe they were actually working on it. Ever since they removed Google labs and quick controls from the Web browser in 4.1+ I have begun to get annoyed with Android but this will bring me back.

I never tried a pie menu....it always seems strange. Might give it a whirl in case Google does do this.
