Some intrepid code hunters have found evidence that Google may be about to introduce a new section to the Google Play Store: a News section. The idea is that it will be something similar to Apple's Newsstand, but focused specifically on newspapers since Google Play already has a dedicated Magazines section...

Then what's the point of Google Currents? I defeats the purpose of a 'Store'. They're gonna sell news now?

Theoretically the News section of the store would be for news sources that only offer subscriptions, like the New York Times, or Wall Street Journal. Free sources would still go through whatever you want: Currents, Flipboard, News360, etc.

Perhaps this is one reason behind the demise of reader. If you wanna sell news, drop the very popular free news source. Of course, like i said, just ONE of many reasons.

Google Reader isn't a "free news source", it's just a news aggregator. You could have had the New York Times or Wall Street Journal in your Reader, but you wouldn't be able to read much if you didn't pay for subscriptions.
