LG released one first, it's called the LG Tri Chip C333 (released Sept. 2012).

Motorola MOTOKEY 3-CHIP EX117 is even older (June 2012)

Both are not smartphones though.

I noticed that, but they all look like feature phones. Could not find any tri-SIM or quad-SIM "smartphones".

LG quad-SIM phone :3

Also, 3 SIMs operating at together on a smartphone will drain a lot of its (already short by lack of enough R&D) battery, right?

With the all rounded corners of the home button and the location of the loud speaker it looks very much like a Note 2 rip off. But the much more rounded corners of the phone look like a Galaxy S 3. Funny combination.

Who in the world is using three carriers at the same time?

Not that many, I tell you.

This is novelty, nothing more or less.

In Brazil they have to use as many carriers as they can, just because the carriers are way too expensive in a contract plan, and they don't offer any service when it comes to other carriers, e.g. they get up to 500 minutes (on the most expensive plans) to talk to other carriers' numbers, while we get unlimited to talk to the same carrier numbers, if you exceed the minutes allowance? you'll tget to pay the overage of ~40 dollar cents/minute! As for data, well, there is no unlimited 3G plan (as 4G is available only on the cities with stadiums for the fifa world cup) and the maximum data plan you can get is 5GB IIRC, and a plan with 5GB, lots of minutes to other carriers and lots of text messages for free (or unlimited, maybe) could be more expensive than 200 dollars/month, and what kind of phone do you get for that? Usually the low-end smartphones with Android, such as Xperia J, or if your plan is a little more expensive, you get *discount* on the S3/S4 or the iPhone, which costs around $1200 16GB and $1500 64GB (and yes, prices already in Obama's Dollars, for your understanding) the 4S starts at $850...

So that's why they need multiple SIM cards, because the carriers won't give anything near the US carriers give (such as unlimited voice, to any number or carrier within the US, unlimited text messages, no tricks! and unlimited data, or a very large data package for a special low price)
