Getting a 3D phone? Check our coverage first!

So, the LG Thrill 4G finally hit the streets in the U.S. and you are really starting to wonder if you should become part of this whole 3D thing, which looks so interesting, yet so vague at the moment. What can we say - your hesitations are very reasonable. On one hand, viewing images or video in 3D on your phone, without the need to wear special gear is nothing short of cool...

i've never personally played with these types of phones, but if its anything like in the theatre, all it does is give me a headache after less than 30 minutes of use. i for one do not see a need for such a thing on my mobile, but thats my opinion

If you are going to get a 3D phone get the better one which is the HTC Evo 3D. Now if you can't afford the best, then get the LG Thrill 4G. 3D is so much fun, I have the HTC Evo 3D & the 3D effect is insane.

i don't no maybe it's me but never have had a problem wit my evo-3d or the movies, 3d phones are the new perspective of looken at the world, the ability to see things on a flat display in 3d is something you will love to have

The only 3d device that I would use is a Nintendo 3DS. Iknow that the 3D phones are pretty cool but I really can't see myself using it.

I have played with the EVO and while in the movies the action seems to come right at you, and the televisions make you seem like your in the action, the phone gives you a 'layered' look. It is totally cool but I dont see myself buying one. The coolness would wear off too quickly for me

Allday28, 3D phones are not stupid. Just because you don't like 3D doesn't mean it's stupid. If you don’t like something that is fine, but to say it's stupid insults everyone who likes 3D. I am sorry but I don't like anything stupid! Grow up buddy you sound like a little kid! Laron said it best “It's not stupid, just different.”

I myself don't really like the 3D effect. I have tried the Optimus 3D in the shops and the eyes really hurt after a few minutes use, same with the 3D TVs.

28, I think you're stupid. $30 for a dual-core phone with an extra 3D feature is the best deal you can get. You don't have to use 3D. Just don't launch it.

The EVO 3d is awesome! It makes me sick that people get the old EVO instead because they say "I don't need 3d." The 3d feature is 3% of what the phone is! The EVO 3d has a better screen, way better processor, better battery life, and so on. If you NEVER use the 3d feature, the EVO 3d is still a good phone....but the Photon may be better.

sadly it makes me motion sick looking at them. But i think they are really cool, the camera is fun.

Played with both.. the 3D experience on the Thrill is better.. The Evo 3D is just an Evo with 3D.. The thrill really improved the Android experience by making improvments to the interface without extra bloat ware.. Evo was a good phone, but the thrill wins, hands down, as a better phone.. Good job for once LG.

That is not what PhoneArena.com says!

I would have to agree with you SAE. LG has yet to really impress me with a smartphone that's made it stateside.

I've used both and while I like the Sense experience better, Thrill definitely smacks the EVO 3d around. Pictures and videos come out better, video output via HDMI looked more crisp, and it blew away the EVO 3D on all tests. The screen, even without 3D, was more crisp on the EVO but lacked the color of the Thrill. I think they're both good phones but I have to give it to LG this time around.

R u guys all F**king me? the Thrill 4G is much better. The Evo 3D has a higher-res screen but is of far inferior quality and contrast levels are low.
The Thrill 4G has a future-proof, OMAP processor which will be able to handle new games and stuff, unlike the A8 architecture of the Evo 3D's.
The 3D is far more prominent and 3D videos and camera shots are better.
The Thrill 4G is much cheaper with or without contract.
Sure its stuck with Froyo for now but the GB update is well on the way.
The problem is that all sites are biased towards HTC's and biased against LG's and Motorola's.
If any of you here have any sort of brain, I'd get one of the new Moto droids like the Droid X2, Droid 3, Droid Bionic, Photon 4G which have better build quality, better screens and future-proof processors.
If you must have a 3D smartphone I'd definitely go with the Thrill 4G

HTCiscool, I don't know where you get that the OMAP dual-core is future proof. This time next year phones will be quad-core. Also the Adreno 220 GPU can handle any game out there. While the LG Thrill finally get Gingerbread, the HTC Evo 3D will get Ice Cream Sandwich. I don't know how you can throw the Droid X2, Droid 3, Droid Bionic, & the Photon 4G when this article is about 3D only? The HTC Evo 3D has the better screen compared to the Motorola qHD screens because the screen they use are Pen Tile LCD which has a grainy look when zoomed in. I hope you are kidding! lol

@SAE LG has alr made the commitment to update the Optimus 3D/Thrill 4G to ICS .
23. MobileMonkey (Posts: 5; Member since: 10 Jan 2011)
Not sure about the future-proof comment considering how fast everything is evolving, especially with talks about Quad-Core but I agree with the rest. Even though the EVO 3D has the higher res screen, it still looks inferior to the Thrill with the much better color accuracy and brightness.
Oh and I checked out that Bionic and that looks to be the phone to beat. I just wish they would've gone with dual channel like the Thrill cause the Thrill still seems to beat it on the tests I ran on both phones.

This 3D thing is dumb. I used the HTC 3D for 6 hours to do a review and it was a waste of time

i have the lg thrill , its awesome!!! i think the 3d effect was better on it, than the evo3D, , and olny morons and trolls, say that 3D is a gimmick !!!
20. JEEPOFFROADV8 (Posts: 36; Member since: 01 Apr 2009)
well i wasnt big on 3d either, but after playing with the evo 3d for awhile and sprint giving me a great discount on it i got one. WOW! this is a great smartphone! i look at the 3d part as just a bonus if i wanted to watch a 3d movie or rent one, take 3d pics,videos... iim a huge fan of htc phones love there sense 3.0. so u can justify and say its gimmicky to talk yourself out of it. but thats your loss!

Alot of people say that the 3D on the thrill is better when I watch phone reviews on YouTube.
26. u-suck-more (Posts: 529; Member since: 26 Aug 2011)
i have used both phones and the 3D effect on the LG is wayyyyyyyy better than the EVO. also, LG has more 3D applications on their phone unlike HTC
