GSM customers to hit two billion
3G Americas and Informa Telecoms & Media announced that nearly 1/3 of all people on the Earth
use GSM as the technology for their wireless phones. The two billion mark is expected to be reached by the end of June. It took twelve years to reach the first one billion GSM subscriptions, back in 2004, but only 2.5 years to hit the next billion. The three billion mark is expected to be reached in 2010.

Globally, there are 2.29 billion cellular users encompassing all technologies, placing GSM as the dominant market leader.
