GIVEAWAY: Optimus G, PHOTON Q and Galaxy Victory for Sprint

0. phoneArena 30 Nov 2012, 07:49 posted on

It's almost time for holidays and we're already in the mood for presents! And this time, thanks to our partners from Sprint, we're giving not one, but a total of three wonderful smartphones: the LG Optimus G, Motorola PHOTON Q and Samsung Galaxy Victory! Actually, this will be just this week. The next one we'll be doing a second giveaway, once again with a unit of each of these three models; and the week after that, we'll be giving away these three, plus an LG Mach, which means that for these three weeks, we'll be presenting you with a total of 10 devices! Talk about a great start of the holiday season...

I’ve got a lot of opinions on smartphone construction, so I will give several functions/aspects, in descending order of importance.

The most important function is the interface, particularly how easy it is to accurately input information. Touch screen phone technology has advanced tremendously, yet it is still a huge pain to type on a virtual keyboard. What’s more, the unresponsive virtual buttons found on most video game emulators make for a horrible gaming experience. There is a reason why PC and console manufacturers have stuck with physical button interfaces, and that reason is responsiveness. With this in mind, a touch screen phone (especially one equipped with high end graphics) should really still have some sort of actual command buttons, be they a qwerty keyboard or video game style controls (as on the Sony Xperia Play).

The second most important function is speedy internet access. Now, more than ever, people use their smartphones as a method of going online. A bad connection can ruin that important function.

The third most important function is the ability of the phone to handle media/gaming content – i.e. the system-on-chip’s CPU and graphics package. People want more power – here’s to hoping that Moore’s law keeps up a bit longer.

The fourth most important function is battery life. It is comforting to know that one has the juice to go the distance, and recent phones toting batteries in the 3,000+ mah range are a welcome development. I know phone thickness is an issue for some, so the best way to compromise on this issue is to design the phone with swappable/upgradable batteries. I would gladly go a few mm thicker for a 3+ Ah battery.

The fifth issue is durability. One of the reasons I had stuck with the woefully slow I series Motorola phones (i530, i580, i1) over the years is their Toyota Hilux-esque reliability. Although it would be nice to see that build quality in a more powerful phone, I am glad to see the widespread adoption of Gorilla Glass and the recent adoption of special water-resistant nano coating treatments.

As a current Sprint subscriber myself, the next phone I buy will hopefully have some combination of a physical keyboard, 4G internet, and an extremely powerful processor. High durability, an unlocked bootloader, and a big battery are also huge bonuses. Removable/upgradable storage (micro sd), a camera, speakerphone, wifi, Bluetooth, autonomous GPS, etc. are fantastic features that are already standard on most phones (and they should be). The Photon Q is a huge step in the right direction, but I would love to see a quad core version sporting a beefier battery.

I would say that the ability to text, browse the internet, and take pictures are the most valuable features for me. Especially browsing the internet.

Battery life and input, whether is be a slide out keyboard or high DPI touchscreen. Y'all need good battery life so the phone will last, and it needs to be easy to use, which starts at how you interact with it...ergo touchscreen or keyboard.

I think the most important feature for me is going to be battery life. I look at that feature first and everything else is secondary .

I love the ability to have widgets i think it makes the experience more fun. That is my favorite software feature. as far as hardware goes...I'm not huge on physical keybords, but ill take it....I love having more ram. got 1 GB on my evo and with all of the preloaded software, it has a lot of lag. Id say favorite hardware feature...higher amount of ram.

turn off data...I mean - do that at night using smartactions or just create a widget or it could be an option in the pulldown notification on certain ROMs.
