Fujifilm sues Motorola in relation to four patents used on Android phones

Add Japan's Fujifilms to the list of companies suing Android manufacturers; the venerable film company says that Motorola has infringed on four of its patents and says tha a large number of the devices it has on the market are violating Fuji's IP which adds up to Ka-Ching, Ka-Ching...

Apple sure isn't going to agree to binding mediation; why should Fuji? But before things even get to non-binding mediation, Fuji's case is going to have some hurdles to overcome. Like the claim being overbroad, as mentioned in the article.

Why Fujiflim did not see android as an opportunity to share their camera tech and profit from it?
27. So-Sayz-Eye (Posts: 30; Member since: 08 Nov 2011)
How is it sharing if they have no authority to use it, else Fuji wouldnt be filing a suit now.

Aww poor FUJI, you ran out of ideas and now you wanna be like Apple and sue the hell out of an innocent open source company.

Fanboyism aside, the only logical explanation I can get from all the court news is that there must be something wrong with android and it's OEMs. How else would you explain all the lawsuits against them? Hate? I don't think so, many other tech companies are very prosperous but never get sued this much. Although Nokia is not in a good shape right now, there were undisputed Kings not so long ago and there weren't this many lawsuits against them, even Motorola, Samsung and Sony before they adopted android had very few if any significant lawsuits against them.
The thing with android is that google doesn't concentrate on a particular differentiating feature for their platform. Android is like a mixture of symbian and IOS. It is as if android has bits of everything. This makes it very likely to lock horns with others. IOS focuses on the ease of use and availability of apps, Windows phone is built on Metro and livetiles, Meego is built on the swipe concept blackberry focuses on security and enterprise but what is android focused on? Notification? those can be found on symbian and ios, a grid of icons? you get the same on symbian, ios and blackberry, widgets? same thing. What makes android different? Maybe the fact that it has bits of everything. Once you make something of your own, no one can sue you because it is yours. Android OEMs pay billions anually to microsoft and nokia to use their technologies. How many lawsuits are there against Nokia, microsoft, blackberry, symbian, bada and even meego? I don't know of any. For android to be competitive, they must have high specs . The iphone 4s came out when android phones with 1300Mhz dual core processors were available but none of them outsold it, in fact it is still being compared to a galaxy s3 which is the best collection of specs you can get on the market right now. Windows phone 7 even though it lacks much can perform simple tasks faster and is smoother than most android phones with high specs. IOS 6 was recently announced with very few new additions but i can bet my hand that the next iphone will outsell any android phone, that is simply because apple is not focused on specs but the experience their users have. Google should choose something that they will focus on for their platform otherwise the lawsuits will keep piling up.

Ever heard the saying once you go black you never go back lmaooo? Well same thing with android my friend there is simply too much to offer to not wanna get with them...and yea sorry if apple fans are kinda "traped" into the apple ecosystem to even think about leaving ROFL....and ok so now we have an ANCIENT phone company seeing that apple gained A LITTLE and yes VERY LITTLE ground in the court room and now they are trying revive there company or gain whatever they can to ummmmm i guess try and get back in the game??...SMH...i respect apple but people will always try and knock down whom or whatever has the most potential to RULE in what ever subject.....apple fears android just as much as android fears the iphone so dont try and think that apple is ALL innocent here man..

Though I do not completely agree with your "Android is mix of this and that, so they get sued ", but I do like your point of every competitors focusing on something. Android seems to be just....uh.. random!
13. SonyFTW2020 (Posts: 311; Member since: 03 May 2012)
I'll tell you what android is focusing on "NO LIMITS" and that is exactly why they are dominating becuase people would rather do what they want with there phone than have to be dictated by a company.....and they also can have that option without having to go completely broke!......Now too the millions of apple fans that are once again CAUGHT in the ecosystem and have been since the very first iphone realease, well those people will always be what apple can count on...Sad thing is, its like converting jews into christianity! Lol we all know which way is the right or better way, but we just refuse to believe it..
21. ron1niro (Posts: 54; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
I also like the "NO LIMITS" because it gives the consumer many options, i guess what i'm saying is focusing on one factor and building all the other aspects of the phone around that. An example is how windows phone is built on metro and livetiles. All the other software aspects of the phone are built around that, metro apps, livetiles pinned to the homescreen and things like that. Android apps are just apps built to run on android.

Tell that to Apple who's made more money than Google will ever make on a"closed system."
closed system= security and reliability, timely updates.
Android = unprotected prone to virus and malware, vast useless options, confusing to the average consumer, a product that loses value overtime. New phones have to be made every Three months. false customization claim. Only able to change wallpaper. Consumers don't have the ability to change skins. OEMs do like sense and touchwiz.

Apples phones are no better than highend android products. The 4s will obviously be compared to the sg3 but only because it is the best Apple has to offer atm- the gs3 is way better than the 4s. Also, it is hard for android phones to sell more than an iPhone because apple only releases one phone per year whereas android phones have competition with their own os for example the one x and the gs3
36. SonyFTW2020 (Posts: 311; Member since: 03 May 2012)
you know what thats very true, honestly what android is doing is comparing each android phone to another android phone...and somtimes people have difficulty choosing which phone is right for them.....And this is where apple will dominate because people know what to expect from apple year in and year out so its where they can always come back to for satisfaction...While it is true that android is definitely better in MAJOR areas, it really boils back down to customer satisfaction and apple stays at home and delivers what people want....

Being Android is like being a superstar. You have all sorts of people coming out of the woodworks asking for money.

yes the superstars... like Milli Vanilli and we know what happen to them..

Florian Cocksucking Mueller and his blog. People should stop making him or his blog an authority considering what a biased cunt that he is. I'd wait for a more reputable source on what is going on.

It will end when Android (Google) and their oems start respecting the IP of others, and stop disregarding others' IP by implementing it as their own in Android devices.
It's simple. Before implementation, check to see if the IP belongs to another entity, if so, license it. If they don't do the due diligence, and are found to infringe, license the IP instead of being sued.

How about make a working prototype of something first then try to patent it? How about if you submit a patent and don't produce an actual product for it, it becomes invalid after a couple years? Google produced their "Glass" gizmo and what happens? Apple comes along with a patent for something similar (although uglier) with nothing else to show for it but a crude drawing on paper. Anyone can dream something up (time travel is mine, so f*ck off Apple...lol), but if said dreamer/company/troll doesn't have tangible proof of concept to submit with their idea then they shouldn't be able to claim IP. What products/tech does Fugi have out to go with said IP? Is Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, HP, etc paying Fugi for whatever tech this vaguely worded patent covers or do they use something totally different? Are the creators of Bluetooth in trouble now because of this?
What if Google had bought Atari along time ago, and then helped them come up with a way to patent the internet that they helped create? I wish the king of search was king of the internet and held the key to which devices were capable of accessing it.
Will this be the year that Apple produces a phone that doesn't require an off-road tire to be wrapped around it...followed by a vague patent infringment claim against Android because they have durable phones in the market?
Apple has nice products yes, but they haven't really innovated anything new since the original iFragile-phone and iPad. Siri wasn't apple innovating...that was Apple buying the ios app and marketing it for their next slightly better iProduct.

Since Apple has been on the wrong side of a few cases like this....ALL manufactures need to do what you said.
33. willard12 (Posts: 1631; Member since: 04 Jul 2012)
Stealing the IP? You mean IP such as "swype to unlock" or rounded corners with flat screens using the color black that Android OEMs have been sued for countless times? There is a fine line between IP and patent trolling. Remember, Google has facial unlock, while Apple has a patent application for it. When your handsets can't even get real 4g connectivity and others have had 4g lte for months, litigation is all you have to slow down the innovation of others.

Seriously... Who the frig has been working at the patent office?!
22. JunitoNH (Posts: 1700; Member since: 15 Feb 2012)
No Android is not like superstar, rather more like a thief. Who says Apple is not an innovator .
23. jroc74 (Posts: 6004; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
And Google doesnt innovate?
ALL the mobile OS's have nice innovation. Some of yall really need to understand that.
25. MartyK (Posts: 808; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
Since you know nothing about being number 1, please allow me to explain.
If you are number #1 in anything (Sports, Music, and Electronics),
People/Companies/Haters will always come after you to bring you down.
See, having a lot of people gunning for you is nothing more then the nature of the beast/price you pay for being #1..Android is the Pele-Payton-Marino of the Mobile world;thus, they will get sue until they give up the Throne ( King of Mobile).
31. lyndon420 (Posts: 4167; Member since: 11 Jul 2012)
What has Apple done that is new and groundbreaking since the original iPhone and iPad?
28. So-Sayz-Eye (Posts: 30; Member since: 08 Nov 2011)
Everyone who makes it seem as Android is being picked on needs to stop it. Android has good ideas, but many times they take shortcuts to implement them and their being sued because of that.
I don’t know how many people are really willing to admit it, but I know if I worked hard and came up with something worth patenting I want to be paid for and not have someone using it without my permission making and making money and keeping money that’s mine. With that being said sometimes the government approves stupid and vague patents, you here that apple fans, sliding from left to right to unlock my phone is not a worthwhile patent IMO.

This lawsuit will go the same route that Oracle's went....
35. sprockkets (Posts: 1611; Member since: 16 Jan 2012)
This is ridiculous. The patent on the phone part is literally saying "we invented a phone that can transmit SMS or MMS messages." It's super vague. It can literally be used to sue anyone.
One is a real time view finder. Which is funny, cause apple/kodak already patented that.
Then there is face detection.
Then there is image compression, very vague. Ooo, not like 50 companies (including MS) claimed to have invented that. Whoopy.
The whole argument this is an "Android" issue of stepping over IP is retarded. EVERY camera infringes, and if they want can license it. But due to the mostly open source nature of Android, it makes things so fing complicated.
But why sue Moto when Qualcomm or TI or whoever else makes the imaging processing for the phone? Oh, that's right, because we are trolls.
37. networkdood (Posts: 6330; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
so, when it is all over - I wonder who will have the most patents infringed upon? We should just add them up and the winner receives a 50 million dollar one time stipend.
41. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
when one person sues you.. it could be anyones fault. but when you are being sued left and right.. hmmm is your fault Android...
