First-gen iPad not getting iOS 6 update, Apple confirms
0. phoneArena 11 Jun 2012, 14:22 posted on
Unfortunately for all first-gen iPad owners, the rumor from earlier today turned out to be on the right track. The first iPad model will not be updated to iOS 6, as it became known today during the platform's announcement. The reason? We are not quite sure, but hardware limitations are definitely out of the question...

aka the Middle-fingered Wave. 1st gen iPad owners - you aren't worthy enough.

So Apple is asking first gen iPad owners to buy new iPad to taste iOS6...thought Apple is best when it comes to updates...but not anymore!

At least first gen iPad have gotten an update already unlike many Androids that's still left out in the dusk without even hoping for one.

It's really simple answer - first gen ipad is not on stores anymore (stores still selling 3GS as well) :)

Same here, tempted to get a Nexus 7 to replace my iPad...

so much for apple nnot supporting it's older hardware, even Samsung, which people say is horrible at updates even updated it's galaxy line from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 :D
and we can run 4.0 unofficially, can you?
9. QinEmpire (Posts: 145; Member since: 16 May 2012)
now tell me which phone is shipped with 2.1 that's updated to 2.3 with only minor changes?
20. destr0y3r (Posts: 33; Member since: 12 Jun 2012)
oh smartass, what does 2.1~2.3 brings? Almost nothing but fixes.
24. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5685; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
it brought design changes more especially with the custom UIs (which is more than can be said for iOS) Flash Player, NFC Support, etc. etc.

This crap. The iPad 1 is like three years old. It has seen several iOS upgrades. That's many more than any Android device will ever see in its lifetime. The iPad 1 has been discontinued. PA shouldn't post slightly misleading articles to sort of anger people. No one complains when Motorola or Samsung gives the middle finger for updates.
10. wassup (Posts: 565; Member since: 23 Jun 2011)
umm, it's 2 years old, the SGS has seen 3 updates, more than iPad.
2.1 to 2.1.x (depending on your region), 2.1.x to 2.2.2, 2.2.2 to 2.3, 2.3 to 2.3.7...
where's your argument now?
PS, do you have an extra chromosome too?
15. matistight (Posts: 254; Member since: 13 May 2009)
ummmm youre wrong.
ipad went 3.2-3.2.2-4.2.1-4.3-4.3.5-5.0-5.0.1-5.1-5.1.1.... do your research first
18. frydaexiii (Posts: 1387; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
And after all that updates it still can hardly do what the SGS can at version 2.1...Pity pity
19. passerby (Posts: 1; Member since: 23 May 2012)
if you meant the iPad for not able to make calls like SGS, then yes.
I have iPad1, and I was disappointed to hear this news. But if you look at it this way, what was the purpose of purchasing iPad1 in the first place? It didn't have navi, siri, fb integration, etc. these would just be added bonuses if put on iPad1.
iPad1 has seen 3 major updates, 3, 4, and 5.0. In comparison, the first Samsung Galaxy Tab came out around the same time as iPad1, I'm not even sure if it will be upgraded to 3.0(honeycomb) officially, never mind 4.0(ics).

Considering the iPad original has been discontinued, this makes sense.
However, with the table war getting really hot though, breathing life into the original iPad may have meant more loyal iOS users however.
It will be interesting to see the impact here.

Apple isnt concerned with that, its ecosystem ensures that once you are in the eco system, they want you to be trapped in it. Im sure nearly everybody who has an original Ipad will be getting another one when the time comes. A lot have already done so upgrading from the original to 2 or new ipad.

I totally agree...I'm a little late with my comment, because I have a PC, a Netbook, and an iPhone 4 (the latter to which I am most tethered). However, I have to say, I LOVE my 1st gen iPad, even though I use it fairly sporadically as compared to my iPhone. I don't need a camera or a thinner profile, or even a slightly faster processor. When the 2nd gen iPads came out, all my research pointed to such slight differences that it wasn't crucial to look into trading up. And I'm one of those people that have one of the first iPods (yes, I lost the motherboard in it TWICE -- thank God for having the foresight to purchase the extended warranty) -- but I have to say, this behemoth STILL WORKS just fine (and of course, I bought the 5th gen iPod as well, mostly because it holds 80GB versus the 20GB (I think) on the 1st gen. Let me just say that this iPod works wonderfully still, and I have never had any problems with it whatsoever.
So tonight I was updating and syncing my iPad (because it's been nearly a month) and I wanted to dl a new app (lame as it sounds, it's Beauty.com's app for the iPad). I have it on my iPhone, so I thought it'd be nice to have it on my iPad as well. So I go to install it, and I get a message saying that this app (non-essential as it may be) requires iOS 6.
So I'm one of those "loyal" to my Apple purchases people. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with my 1st gen iPad. I'm thinking that when the daily App Updates start appearing, THEY could easily require the new iOS as well, which is frankly just ridonculous. We all know iPads aren't cheap, either, so why on earth would I upgrade this soon (I've only had this thing for TWO years)! And even if I did, I'm thinking the most cost effective option would be to try and sell it back to Best Buy and get maybe a 4th of the $$ back, just so I can spend MORE $$ on a newer iPad I don't feel like I need.
Yeah, Apple needs to realize the number of people like me with the 1st gens and try being LOYAL to US. I'm not holding my breath, but one can hope.

Yet another "Screw you!" to all those early adopters of the iPad! Oh well, there wasn't much to ios 6 to look forward to except navigation, at least for me, so no biggie.
22. destr0y3r (Posts: 33; Member since: 12 Jun 2012)
and screw you early adopters of Android tablet without any apps, or HTC tablet that still stuck on 2.3
14. InspectorGadget80 (Posts: 7030; Member since: 26 Mar 2011)
surprise surprise. to think everyone keep saying they always get iOS update unlike our Android does.
17. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5685; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
laugh all you want that this is not getting the update, frankly some of you iOS trolls deserve it after not seeing how obviously bad it is that Apple will push software for devices that can't properly support it. this route will be better for Apple (especially their Technical Support Staff) and their end users.
23. ibap (Posts: 726; Member since: 09 Sep 2009)
I'm not a huge Apple fan, but I bought a used iPad I from a friend who just had to have version 2. It does what I bought it to do, and I don't really care if it get the latest update UNLESS newer apps that don't really need the new features are deliberately restricted to the newer OS version. This could happen because the developers don't have an original to test on, or simply don't care. Given how Apple controls things, I can easily see this happening.
It isn't jailbroken (yet), but can anyone else smell a potential hack to put the new OS, or at least some semblance of it, on the original?
25. sameerchadha (Posts: 1; Member since: 12 Jun 2012)
Apple just threw first Gen IPAD out of the house and under the bus. Seriously? Since when does a 2 year old product seem too old to support?? These consumer companies, apple included, are going to bury us all in a pile of trash.
27. JDDurrant (Posts: 2; Member since: 06 Aug 2012)
If Apple aren't going to give the original iPad iOS 6, they should at least bump it up to 5.2 and add Facebook integration, any changes to Mobile Safari and removal of the classic YouTube app...
28. Littlecrabs (Posts: 1; Member since: 20 Sep 2012)
Any manufacturer is one bad decision away from losing those in their ecosystem. Apple have announced at least two:
1) No iOS6 for iPad 1 = loss of trust
2) Change in docking / charger format on iPhone 5 = loss of trust
They've given competitors a window of opportunity to win those customers who now have to pay for the latest firmware.
I have sunk costs in iOS apps, but now might be the time for me to look seriously at Android and make the jump. The devices are effectively as good as Apple and much cheaper.
Nokia screwed up when they stopped making phones compatible with the business standard car kit in the UK. Apple might have just done the same.

Yes owners of iPad1 like me appear to have been discontinued by Apple. Oh what a shame, my $650 investment of 2 years ago is now valued at $50 or less.
This proves the problem with closed-vendor solutions - they lock you into a single source and then screw you. They decide to obsolete your tablet computer even though its hardware is perfectly usable, and they try to make you buy a later model.
I've had enough of being a little grub locked inside a very sour Apple. I'm fed up with all the lock-in factors, iTunes, iCloud whatever. I wish Microsoft every success with Windows 8/RT. Instead of getting indigestion from another Apple, my future Windows 8 tablet will support USB devices, plug-in memory expansion, and whatever apps and data I want to load onto it. I am just fed up with Granny Smith.

Just @ genius bar and told due to low memory message I would have to repeatedly restart the ipad throughout the day. Also I was told the gyroscope feature not working could be fixed by software. The techs really didn't seem to care that I had 3months left on the apple care warranty. This is the first time after spending about $65000 over 20 years I felt blown off by support @ Apple in store. It is frustrating after spending $599 for the 32 G less than two years ago. No offer to leave it and look it over the tech Justin emailed me an article so I could try a fix myself. I feel like I wasted my time and all this after having my hard drive replaced two times in less than 1 year on a Mac Book Pro 15 2.66 I7. I was considering spending $3000 to get another Pro after only 1 1/2 years of owning the other Pro. It makes me want to spend my money elsewhere after 20 + loyal years to Apple.

Apple is just wanting to sell NEW iPads. My first gen is perfectly fine and gives me no reason to run out and purchase a newer better model. Frankly, the iPad hasn't changed enough to support people running in to buy an upgrade.iPad's aren't in every purse and pocket all over either. So they do not have as many loyal upgraders as the phones. IOS6 is another reason to "get a new one." Support of a discontinued product is a cop-out. Everyone knows that most the innards are the same as the iPhone 4. Apple engineers could probably click a button (or touch a screen) to generate a build of iOS6 for the first gen iPad. It's really crappy that the iPhone 3gs can get a build and not the iPad. Give some developpers time to hack and I'm sure an unlocked iPad Gen1 with IOS6 will be around soon enough :)
32. venturadog (Posts: 2; Member since: 28 Sep 2012)
Oh.. and the REAL reason for no love of the first gen iPad...... NO CAMERA. That nixes many of the NEW features of iOS6. So why does it really need iOS6? I imagine they may also have pulled it because the test platforms couldn't handle the extra BAGGAGE that comes with a new OS. I bet that those iPhone 3GS's running iOS6 are creeping along even slower than what happened with the iOS5 upgrades.

I have an iPad 1 and it's frikken terrible. Keeps crashing and now apple poofs tell us there's no update?
So what happens with people that purchase the latest pad 2 and 3?
Are they also going to ditch those users in about 2 years time?
Do apple poofs keep expecting all of us to buy new iPads ! Greeting punch of pricks.

This has most likey been said but, I have a gen 1 and a Gen 2 IPad, I use a Galaxy Tab at work, my tab stays more up todate than the iPad, my tab is on 4.1 and I don't see Samsung stopping updates like iPad. If all I owned was a Gen 1 iPad I too would be angry. Thank goodness I have my Galaxy Tab to fall back on when they dump the Gen 2 owners next.
Too bad as I like some things about the IPad platform

To Apple I have just brought my first Apple Ipad First Generation I love the product as it is but one thing is that the IOS 6 you cant install it because it wont let me I have tried many of times to do this. As a product user I think that it should be your choice whether or not you want to upgrade your operating system on the Ipad 1st generation. Stopping people from doing this will properly lose customers and they might even switch back to android tablet which you can update. I know the hardware issues are at a limit on an Ipad first generation but if the user wants to do this update still then it should be made available or at least the apps available on the IOS 5. As im a student I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't install office 360 app on my ipad so I had to install a different app. Please could you do something about this issue as stated with the rest of the comments above. Thank you.

Apple are criminals and the way they market their products especially the upgrades are tantamount to legalised theft.
They have a monopoly only because we put up with it. We should all stop buying apple.
Check it out, they have more money than the United States treasury. 760 billion as opposed to 740 ish billion. I could be wrong by a few points but not much.
I am an angry man with an iPad 1 series 64gig. Now it is worth FA,!!
