First camera samples from the LG G2 - compared to the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, One and Lumia 1020
0. phoneArena 07 Aug 2013, 16:58 posted on
Earlier today we had the opportunity to take a few camera shots using the new LG G2, and being the shutterbugs that we are, we took our our iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, One and Lumia 1020 to take pictures of the exact same scenes. What this allows us to do now is to not only take a look at the camera samples from the G2, but also compare them to those taken by its rivals...

Photo's are wonderful. Except the first picture of the chips where it failed to focus correctly. Besides that one I'd say it outperformed all others.

what? you crazy? look at colour contrast this has created. even though im not apple fan look at iphone picture and nokia lumia picture to get better colour understanding of those pictures.
then it has lighting issue too, look at first picture, next under too much light isnt gathered properly by G2, probably because of tiny sensor with too much pixels.
pixels seem on par with GS4 which is pretty ok. nothing unique.
camera and plastic design on this phone is its flaws, otherwise pretty nice phone.

I would say from best to worse overall based on those pics:
Lumia 1020 (for details mostly)
G2 (look at last pic, WAY more clear than Iphone and GS4
GS4 (good color, contrast)
Iphone (over exaggerates the lighting)
HTC (lookin' rough)

The G2 performed very well! It managed to produce 50% less noise but it never compromise the quality of the picture. Zoom in all of the pictures and you can see it..

I definitely thought that it was a cup of bacon at first lol....would've been much better.

They look very good. The camera on the IP5 and the S4 looks very similar. The one on the One looks like a KIRF.

It looks like the first iP5 shot was a bit sloppy.
I'd also have to agree that all around the HTC One didn't do so well... the last pic looks nice and sharp though.
I'd rank the pics taken #1 Lumia 1020 #2 Galaxy S4 #3 G2 #4 iP5 and #5 HTC One.
This wasn't done formally though so I'll wait for the 'official' comparison.

The G2 performed pretty good!
I think the G2 = S4 overall.
Then comes iP5 and One. HTC One performed better on close ups...it was less detailed on the first and second round.
G2 Looks promising.

Lumia 1020 best, even bokeh is the best one no question about it.
S4 = G2 - but g2 has more yellowish look, the white on the first set of pics is better on S4. Detail wyse, g2 looks better BUT it looks that every pic woth g2 (except first one) was taken CLOSER to object than all the other phones!!!!!

Wow, pretty nice. Way less grainy than the iphone, and on par with the Lumia. The One doesn't have nearly the resolution so I think the Lumia is the only one that really gives it competition. Although the Lumia and GS4 might have better white balance.

I thought the one had the worst of the group followed by the ip5 then the s4, the g2 had the second best shots with the 1020 having superior detail.

Cameras big for me on a smartphone. The G2 shows it can pull its own weight.

Do some research on LG's history with OS updates. Let us know if you're still willing to buy an LG phone.
34. BraggingBob (Posts: 25; Member since: 17 May 2013)
Updates come based on carrier requests to fix major bugs. LG's quality has been very good thus not requiring a lot of updates. Jelly Bean has been very stable.

Yeah that's history, NEXUS is the future.. And you do some research, the LG made the NEXUS 4..
47. PunyPoop (Posts: 750; Member since: 18 Jan 2013)
Nope, it doesn't mean that if you have a GS4 you'll have to be blind.. Look closely, G2 outperformed GS4..
15. hadouken (Posts: 18; Member since: 12 Dec 2012)
Pic #6 is focused on the projector instead of the chips. Lol.
Anyways, I really like the G2 pictures though, esp the Vitamin water one. It seems less noise.
73. glentomas123 (Posts: 70; Member since: 01 Jun 2011)
Exactly. I assume many of these out of focus shot were intentional. It's not hard to lock focus on any of these phones (however, never tried the G2 yet, so don't know there). What up with that???

PA always hate sony , why wont you include sony xperia z
Here, no matter what PA and it members will do sony will still
Remain my number brand.
22. belovedson (Posts: 832; Member since: 30 Nov 2010)
When other manufacturers make better use their own sensor it tells you a lot about the software engineers for Sony
Clue they are not that great.
Sony isn't mentioned because they have not caught up to he field especially after the horrible screen on the z
65. Akfred (banned) (Posts: 76; Member since: 08 Nov 2012)
The Z camera is perfect after the 4.2.2 update plus
Battery life improvement, as for the screen how many
People notice it in real life?
25. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
Hahaha... are you really sure that you want this so called tech site to include Xperia Z in some comparison.
they will break your heart so badly just like what they have done to Xperia ZR in their so called review.
PA : ZR is made of very ordinary plastic and bland visual. VS GA : ZR uses high quality plastic and still a looker.
PA : ZR prety poor viewing angle average battery life and so so outdor visibility. VS GA : ZR viewing angle is better than the Z even it’s still far from perfect, trouble free outdor visibility even little bit better than HTC One, and also great battery life (17.48 h 3G talk time, “the best” web browsing 11.20 h, and 7.30 h of video playback, and 62 h of endurance rating).
My point is you should thanks to god that PA wont include Xperia Z in this comparison.

The g2 looks on par or similar to the s4 which is good news and ois should mean better low light too..
21. bugsbunny00 (Posts: 1608; Member since: 07 Jun 2013)
judging by my screen g2 pics mo' better...
24. c.sanchez (Posts: 16; Member since: 26 Mar 2013)
LG G2 did beat the GS4 in these set of shots. Open two webpages. Look at the first round of shots and just zoom in to the (Wed, August 7th) and you can see that the G2 does have better clarity and less noise than the GS4! So I think second place goes to G2 and not just the first round.
28. maxican16 (Posts: 364; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
I'm no camera expert, but to me the G2 was the best of the bunch! Both in terms of light sensitivity and detail. I'm not a fan of LG's update track record, but this camera makes me want to get this phone.
29. shadyghost (Posts: 3; Member since: 07 Aug 2013)
While the g2 camera does look good, comparing it to the 1020 is really only fair if you mention the ridiculous lossless zoom capabilities the 1020 has which sets it apart from the pack. I have found this feature to finally enable my phone to be used as a primary shooter. This alone beats out the competition. Also as with the 808 I am able to get superior images using the awesome manual controls over the auto settings. Not sure if the same could be said about the g2 but worth mentioning.

The 13mp sensor with ois doesn't sound like anything that special. Htc 8mp cameras with the image chip, variable flash, & low light BSI lenses f 2.0 aperture look more impressive (like on the One S I just scored a great deal on) . Lg doesn't even mention the aperture of the lenses. Point is for this being there "Flagship" It doesn't sound that special in the camera department.

WOW !!! Better tha S4 !!! And ... the same as 1020 !!! And ... the best ... Android !!!!! Take my money LG !!!

G2 looks to have a camera that FINALLY has LG playing with the big boys. I think it was the best on 3 or 4 of the 5 shots. Well done LG!
38. papaleu (Posts: 1; Member since: 07 Aug 2013)
I confess that I was surprised with the shooting of G2. Was second only to 1020. At first looked the G2 showed a good white balance, less noise than the S4, Iphone 5 and One, and the colors are not saturated. Nice work from LG!!!
39. ianbbaa (Posts: 296; Member since: 20 Mar 2013)
Lumia 1020 best
S4 = G2 - but g2 has more yellowish look, the white on the first sets of pics is better on S4. Detail wyse, g2 looks better BUT it looks that every pic (except first one) was taken CLOSER to object than all the others!!!!!

lol , look at the G ... LG got a light there and you cant see what word is ... this is crap camera .. Lumia 1020 best
49. shadyghost (Posts: 3; Member since: 07 Aug 2013)
After viewing this article and pictures on my computer my opinion of LG's camera has diminished a bit. My first assessment was on my phone and they looked pretty good but after firing up my computer they don't look as good and neither does the writers photography abilities and shot consistency. I understand this is far from scientific but the pics where the G2 has the best performance it's obvious it has the advantage of light angle and proximity. (water bottles, chips up close)
Then in the other pics where it still clearly has the advantage of being closer to the item being photographed it fails to beat out the iphone 5 (chips farther away). Although this looks to be more due to the photographer than the camera itself.
Overall the 1020 is far above the competition here in detail, clarity, accurate color representation and bokeh effect. The bokeh is especially bad on the G2. The G2 looks decent compared to the rest and beats out the others most of the shots but wait for the professional review people.

The Htc One took better Macros it looked like and the iPhone and S4 seemed to take the most realistic at that size.
53. Muzhhur (Posts: 256; Member since: 14 Sep 2012)
better samples on Lumia 1020, dont you think?
54. Ronny666 (Posts: 108; Member since: 08 Jun 2013)
Ok, some of you guys must be little blind. Didn't you notice that Lumia, S4 and Iphone 5 captured most details compared to G2 or HTC One? G2 look ok on macro shots but not great. G2's pics are little yellowish too. Anyway, this may not be an ultimate test though. Shall wait for the real comparison test.

The LG G2 seems to have substantially less noise than the other cameras. It remains to be seen how good the video looks.

They just ran a comerical on FX ten min ago saying how iphone 5 was zero down... hope they pull the adds in time!

you should put the images side by side in a grid to see the difference.

I'm not really a camera person..
They all look the same to me...
