i know more choice is supposedly better, but if the operating system market keeps splintering, which OS will house the best apps? I'd be interested in trying other OS's but how long til Firefox or Tizen or Ubuntu have decent app selections? It's already kinda splintered with Android, iOS, BB and WP...
Am I the only one who sees a downside to all these operating systems?

No, I'm with you... The problem with most OS's is that they live or die on their apps.
The only real reason Android was able to squeak into the market was because they offered their OS for free, so OEM's had a low risk option to compete with Apple. Also, people love cheap phones. Yes it garnered apps over time, but only once it grew large enough to be stand up and be noticed. Even today Android is far from obtaining the level of quality and number of apps that Apple commands. Otherwise Android was very "meh" until 4.0 hit.
The problem all these other OS' face is they won't have it so easy. Competition is actually stiff between a number of companies already and their markets have had time to at least build something of an App foundation. Just ask Microsoft. They're still struggling to find apps and a marketshare foothold several years in.
I like new ideas, but I worry how many we can hadnle at once. I also worry about the longevity of the operating systems...

Great, another smartphone line to be built by the suicide capital of the high tech manufacturing world. No thank you.
