The only reason why symbian was over taken so fast is because it stopped having any significant innovation and could not keep up with the progress of Android.
If firefox OS does start to gain popularity, I doubt it will take less than 4 years to overcome Android, since Android is constantly adding new and innovative features to its platform.

Google pays hundreds of millions dollas a year to upgrade Android and I don't think Mozilla has 1 tenth that amount. And Google has support of OHA members and very strong Android community like XDA while Mozilla work almost alone (at least initially).
I love what Mozilla is doing but I don't think FF OS can ever compete with Android and is only a tool of carriers to keep Android in check.

Consider three things:
1- Mozilla partners (carriers) cover the all world, with Telefonica, T-Mobile, TIM, Telenor, Etisalat, Smart and Sprint having their foots in markets as NA, SA, Africa, Europe and Asia;
2- Most people in the world uses smartphones to connect to facebook, twitter and eventually use some maps (and FFOS got Here from Nokia);
3- Those people is going to choose between cheap Android phones running Gingerbread and Firefox OS phones without even understanding the big diffrences between them and it will be nice to see how carriers are going to push these new devices.
After this, i think when Nokia will fire Elop and get tired of Microsoft it will build its next phones running Firefox OS instead of Windows Phone and Asha.

Hey 1% ain't much but iits a start.
Mozilla is a good enough corporation and an OS revolving around HTML5 is a great move given the versatility of HTML5. And again Options are always good to have!
That being said overcoming android in 4 years does not seem like a realistic goal. Android is proven, innovative and quite simply awesome!
Its not about edging the other player out...its about co-existing in harmony which benefits them and common folks like us.

Lets wait and see which type of platform it is.
Hope OS is good and we will see healthy competition.

It is going to need to show something more than a OS to take on the low priced market. That is Android bread and butter territory right there.

Well, remember the first time Android came out? With the first Android HTC Phone? The HTC G1/Dream. Almost everyone said that its one of the worst Mobile OS. Worse than symbian even! Look at Android now! It runs on more than half of the mobile devices worldwide!
Maybe if we all give Firefox OS a chance, they can surely do good! Who knows they might be 2nd best OS in 5 years? (beating iOS obviously, they are running out of ideas lol) I love competitions like this. Companies try to innovate and another company innovates better instead of patenting or suing *coughapplecough*
I cant wait try out the new OS! Come on people, lets all give Firefox OS chance!!

actually yes and no! yes, coz android is dominating to all segment now! but not really good on cheap segment.. android is annoying on a 600mhz-400mhz phones!
no coz mozilla said that they will target a phone at mere $50 so it dont need multicores like android! and app development on HTML5 is easy than native.. that was a developer think! so i think mozilla will be a good fight!
but dont forget, this OS might need data plan to be usable coz its a webpage OS..
and dont forget about jolla that is really promising coz its MeeGo and Tizen too even though samsung dont want to put a buzz around it!!

“It took Android just two years from commercial launch to overtake Symbian and go from new entrant to established global leader, so things can change extremely fast in the smartphone industry.”
well symbian was already slowing down in 2008 after the iPhone coz nokia is so dumb stupid not updating it! and besides the team behind android are former symbian engineers! they go android coz symbian foundation is down and nokia dont support them! UIQ was a good answer and the answer by the foundation but they go s60! nokia miscalculated this!..just like BlackBerry, they miscalculated everything! they should think more futuristic! so now im glad that BlackBerry is on the future with BB10! while nokia--- abandone its bread and butter for WP!!!
