Two crystals were protecting the country until one was shattered to pieces when the monsters invaded. They probably use in-app purchases to download extra episodes.
I prefer paying up front for everything.
I believe it's their way to protect piracy.

Agreed. It annoys me having to buy new episodes for games. Usually i get annoyed and end up deleting instead of getting the upfront money from me.
