Feds want carmakers to make sure drivers are not tempted to text, browse or call while on the road

0. phoneArena posted on 17 Feb 2012, 18:57

The Federal government is telling automakers to design their dashboards so that drivers don't take their eyes off the road and their hands off the steering wheel; the Feds want the car makers to disable functions that are built into the car's navigation system unless you are parked...

What if the passanger is entering the address? They have to wait for the driver to make a stop?

I say if people are dumb enough to text, watch movies or whatever else while driving then put it in the same class as a DUI/DWI, if someone loses their life then give them the guilty party the death penalty (it's their choice to do what they did to cause the accident) and lastly confiscate their cell phone and block them from cancelling or changing their cell plan.

People know it's illegal. People know it's dangerous. F**k 'em if they choose to ignore those facts.

That's a little bit extreme, don't you think? Death penalty because of someone using their phone in an accident. How many of that 9.4% were distracted due to cellphone use. It clearly does not state what percentage died from that. Just that it was from distracted driving. You also think they should confiscate their cell AND make them continue to pay their bill? That is a little bit too far man. Also, a lot of things that people do are illegal and dangerous, we are human, if someone tells us we can't do it, there's an urge to do it anyway, no matter how dangerous. I bet your a hypocrite anyway. chow.

Is there a huge difference from using a hands free system and talking to the passenger next to you? How about trying to eat while driving? This is getting ridiculous.

We need to vote these idiots out of office. They just have nothing better to do then to try to control every aspect of our lives. Lets stop allowing this trend to continue or we deserve it.

I see they're going to take all the fun out of driving soon too. Automatic transmission, automatic windshield wipers, automatic park assist, automatic feature cutoff while driving, soon we'll have automatic driving mode, just hook your sitbelt, put on your helmet, turn off all electronic devices and let them take you to your destination automatically.

Until I got my 2011 Kia Sorento, I absolutely REFUSED to purchase factory GPS NAV in a vehicle, because most I had seen all require the driver to be in PARK to enter information.

I'm all for not entering information while driving.. but WTF.. if I'm driving with my wife or another passenger, then shouldn't they be able to enter the address??? This is absurd.

Why doesn't the government just require auto manufacturers to remove all radios, NAV systems.. and put all the heating and air conditioning systems on auto? I'd hate to crash my car because I'm trying to adjust the temp in the vehicle!
