Experiment shows people have hard time telling Apple iPad 2 from the new Apple iPad
0. phoneArena 16 Mar 2012, 19:41 posted on
Amid indications that Friday's launch of the new Apple iPad did not live up to expectations, perhaps one of the reasons for the lagging launch was that most people couldn't tell the difference between the Apple iPad 2 and the new model...

If you can't tell the difference in screen quality then your effen blind!!!this is the best tablet hands down I have owned and I've owned them all.
8. jtc8008 (Posts: 11; Member since: 24 Feb 2012)
You have owned them all? You must be very very rich. I'm jeolous
18. denmcdon (Posts: 90; Member since: 07 Jun 2009)
No not rich but I do alright. each tablet I owned for about a month then returned it but this I'm keeping.

denmcdon - I meant to thumbs down your post. Not up. My bad.
49. Mandroid (Posts: 209; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
Then you're an effin iDiot for buying the exact same thing you already bought not even a year ago. Oh wait my bad, the screen is prettier.

I don't know, I just got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 with the Super Amoled display, Its pretty awesome even compared with the new iPad
60. matrix_neo (Posts: 334; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
Yeah you're right. I'm proud owner also of Samsung galaxy tab 7.7 which way better than ipad, especially in multitasking. The super amoled plus hd is superb and exynos really fast. They increase the screen resolution of ipad coz they realized maybe samoled is superior in there retina display.
Those people who bought new ipad should nothing to be proud of coz other people who saw their new ipad may think its still an ipad 2... just a waste of upgrade.

Just proves that if you tell an apple user that something is new, they'll believe you.... If PA let us post pictures, this would be a great time for the one from Futurama with Fry shouting "Shut up and take my money!"

I work at best buy and me and another employee were quizzing other employees since we had a new iPad and iPad 2 side by side to see if they could tell the difference, and mosdlt guessed wrong. The only thing that would give it away was the new iPad gets WAY hotter. Even messed with a few customers we knew very well by switching the tags, NONE of them knew before we told them, even after compairing them. We got about: 80 and sold about 20 by 6 (we open at 10). Interestingly enough iPad 2's were selling better because people would come in for the new ipad, see there was almost no difference, and go with the cheaper one, or move to android
13. darkkjedii (Posts: 21309; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
I can tell the difference. My iPad 2 had 32 gigs, and no LTE,my new iPad has 64 gigs, and LTE. Oh,and the screen looks really good too.
36. andro. (Posts: 1998; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
What your describe is mainly small differences in internals which makes no difference to the external device look, build or appearance. The new ipad is essentially the exact same device as previous ipads just with a screen (not made or engineered by apple) which has a better resolution.
The sheer fact is that apple re-releases products year in year out with little difference besides an $ added to the name and an extra 'again' added to the changes everything again motto.
If you place and iphone 4 and an iphone 4$ side by side nonosy can tell the difference
57. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
is it a problem? i mean it seems to be an industry standard….
look at the moto droid… it barely changes at all except for interior… the droid x had like 3 goes before it changed… htc outed the exact same style over and over… samsung does the exact same-- they repagage older designs with new tech… its not a bad thing! u dont have to fix something that isnt broken!!!!
58. roscuthiii (Posts: 2217; Member since: 18 Jul 2010)
You're right. There is nothing wrong with incremental updates. That's how evolution of any kind works. A series of small changes over time.
Here's the thing though: Many of the more "vocal" Apple fans put down Android OS, Android devices, & Android users for exactly this reason. It's the hypocrisy that gets people riled up, and the blind fealty.
17. tedkord (Posts: 11691; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Well, according to most iFans, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an iPad and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (even with the different aspect ratio and buttons), so why would they be able to tell one iPad version from the next?
Maybe if a judge held both up ruened off in front of them from 10 yards away. They seem to think that's a fair test.

Personally, I might have been interested in buying the new iPad.
Unfortunately, the announcement came ahead of time that W8 tablets would be coming out later this year.
So I'll wait until the W8 tablets are out in the market before making my decision.

I work at best buy also and its one of the biggest ones and we got about 270 sold like 180
14. mgonzalez (Posts: 22; Member since: 12 Jun 2011)
Honestly I just got my preordered new iPad and was hoping I didn't receive an iPad 2 by mistake. I think I can notice the weight difference. as for the screen, my eyesight is kind of bad so I don't even really notice the higher screen resolution. I guess I would have to have it side by side with an iPad 2 showing the same image on both screens to really see a difference in screen quality.
19. tedkord (Posts: 11691; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Not to be a smartass, but why not save a few bucks and just buy the 2 then? The only real noticable upgrade on the 3 is the display (unless you want the LTE connectivity)
28. mgonzalez (Posts: 22; Member since: 12 Jun 2011)
I had the iPad 2 and I sold it. To be honest probably not particularly smart on my part because the new iPad is hardly an upgrade but what's done is done. It's still a nice tablet. I prefer it over my transformer prime, just wish the new iPad had a quad core CPU.

Hope they have more in stock, and save self $100.

Funny that's what android devices do when they freeze. They stand there slack jawed till u reboot em. Bwahahahahahahah.
21. tedkord (Posts: 11691; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
iPhones just shut the app, and act like nothing is wrong. Oh, and according to research, they do it more often than Android devices, too...
33. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
funny, i cant remember the last time my phone or tablet froze. hmm. keep paying more and getting less. its working for ya.
16. cellphonator (Posts: 298; Member since: 29 Oct 2011)
I stopped by an Apple store tonight to check out the new iPad and had the same doubt when the 2 of them were next to each other. Comparing text pages or a Google map with very tiny street names you could see the higher pixel density but comparing pictures it was almost unnoticeable.
20. cellphonator (Posts: 298; Member since: 29 Oct 2011)
Btw, the rumor that there could have been a shortage because of the huge request only proved to be another marketing strategy...
22. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
Remember this is the same people that have bought the galaxy tab thinking is the ipad thats why Android sell.. people buy it thinking the Apple logo arrives in the mail
34. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
so you openly admit apple people are iDiots and they only want it for the name and have no idea what it can or cant do. thanks gallito.
43. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
Yes i do.. people dont know what they want.. thats why the take free Android phones over a spending money on phones that will last their 2 year agreements.. now you know why Android has market share.. because of shopper that dont know what they want...
46. sgogeta4 (Posts: 394; Member since: 02 Feb 2011)
Actually, that's why Apple has any market share.
52. Mandroid (Posts: 209; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
Yeah, that' why the Razr and Rezound are more than an iphail-I mean iphone and runs circles around it in every possible category right?
And that's why iphail-DAMN, did it again, sorry iPHONE sells so well. Because 99% of their customers are functionally retarded, don't do any kind of research, and blindly believe what steve b***jobs tells them. FFS, he won you iDiots over by saying apple products were "magical". Give me a f***ing break. if I was talking to a salesman about the time he used "magical" as an adjective we'd be done.
61. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
thats amazing since the vast majority if android sales are for high end devices, not for free phones. Last I remember, the SGS1, SGS2, Evo's, Sensations, and Droids made up the top ten list with only the LG breaking up the streak.
23. KFear (Posts: 143; Member since: 06 Feb 2012)
You can tell a difference with most things that you do, but not an INCREDIBLE difference. You can tell that it's heavier, and i thought the ipad2 was already a little on the heavy side. Also, it's the same OS. I really think I might return mine. I think i just lost a lot of respect for apple. Now they are just being jerks about their mobile products. Who agrees??? Apple fans HAVE to somewhat agree? I mean...come on!!! It's too much of the same this time. Like the 4s.
26. cellphonator (Posts: 298; Member since: 29 Oct 2011)
I partially agree, but you have to keep in mind that when you have a good product it's hard to completely redesign it and make it look totally new every year, above and beneath the shell.
They sell it at the same price as the #2 of last year and it's improved. Of course, it's not enough for an #2 owner to upgrade (IMO) but for a first time buyer it's ok.
30. KFear (Posts: 143; Member since: 06 Feb 2012)
How about getting rid of the button and having a sensor? That's a start. It's a great design, yes. But could they come out with a wide one? Maybe that's because too much product is compatible with the ipad. I'm not sure, but how can someone have an ipad2 and justify this purchase? IOS doesn't need that kind of processor anyway. You can't tell the processing difference on the IPAD3. By the time games are made that take advantage of the quad core graphics...the ipad 5 will be out....or the ipad5s. Are they even trying?
24. Glim12808 (Posts: 394; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
Probably without the announcement that W8 tabs will be coming later this year, I might have been interested in buying the new iPad.
But as it is, I'll wait for W8 tabs to come out before making my decision.
27. rudlie (Posts: 205; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
yes, I also think the new ipad doesn't offer a leap differences to ipad 2, but it still do a crossover to all the competitors. personally I will be buy it next month.
29. aoikemono27 (Posts: 177; Member since: 27 Feb 2012)
Why in the world are you citing info from gawker and gizmodo? They are a tabloid network known for fabricated trash articles and sensational apple stories, good or bad. You should know better.
32. ilia1986 (unregistered)
"Gizmodo handed over an Apple iPad 2 to Gawker employees, telling them that it was the latest iteration of the device, and captured the results. Some correctly noticed no difference in the screen from the iPad 2 while others raved about the amazing screen resolution. One guy noticed how much thinner the new model is and liked the increased resolution on the screen."
This is EXACTLY how Apple marketing works. And people believe it. Just hilarious.

its the end of the world as we know it.. its the end of the world as we know it.. and i feel fine...
37. ilia1986 (unregistered)
I feel more than fine. I feel great! :D
A day may come when the freedom of consumers is taken away, when we forsake our developers, and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of iDevices and closed eco-systems when the age of Personal Computers comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! by all that you hold dear on this good Internet, I bid you stand, Users of Android!

48. axllebeer (Posts: 271; Member since: 05 Apr 2011)
I'm not an Apple fan by any means and I own none of their products and subscribe to none of their services. That said, the most exciting thing about the "New iPad" release is that the price of the iPad 2 has now dropped. I might be interested in picking up the iPad2 in the coming months now if the price stays down.
And if I don't like it I can sell it or use it as a carrying case for my PlayBook, chargers, and all my accessories. :)
