Eric Schmidt says ‘Apple has learned that maps are hard’, and pegs iOS vs Android as the 'defining fight'
0. phoneArena posted on 11 Oct 2012, 01:51
On the topic of who will be the most prominent in the mobile operating system wars he said that Android vs iOS is "the defining fight in the industry today". Asked about Microsoft, he said that a homebrew slate like the Surface tablet would "mean a lot if the product works..."

Correction: Apple maps devs have but the ceo is just as ignorant. Apple is still going to continue with this.*sigh*

Eric certainly has his opinions.... I imagine Nokia would beg to differ on the maps end, but on the Android vs, iOS front, I agree with him. Apple is doing everything they can to separate themselves from Google. Maps is the latest effort.

oh Its gonna work allright, who wouldnt want a tablet running windows meaning all their pc softwares can run on windows 8 tablet?

People who don't want to spend $800 on a tablet with the non RT version, when you can get a better laptop for the same price.
17. rusticguy posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:28 7 0
Exactly. As a tech i would prefer a ultrabook to this.
18. SonyXperiaNexus posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:38 3 0
I didnt know it was priced at 800. but windows 8 seems more tablet oriented than laptop oriented. Maybe the price will go down if its mass produced or because of some other reason because this is going to really hurt its sales. hoping for the best

I'd rather spend the extra $100 or so for the touchscreen. My most recent computer purchase (shopping for a kitchen computer in 2009 or 2010) I was stuck between a AIO touchscreen, or a high-end netbook that could be stashed in one of the drawers. I wound up going for the netbook because while I thoroughly enjoyed the touchscreen experience, I realized Windows7 wasn't designed for the touchscreen, and that touchscreens would have significant improvements with Windows8, so better to save money and use the netbook for a few years until the Windows8 ones hit the market. I'm glad I waited, because not only will I get an AIO, I'll be able to get a touchscreen tablet and dock which will better suit my needs anyway (lots of design work), and both together will still be less than a "decent" imac (which is what my father-in-law wanted us to get) and it doesn't even have touchscreens (though it can have the touchpad thingee)

Its a good thing apple didnt get the maps right or they wouldve definitely patented the world map lol.

I don't understand that Apple has much more cash than Google and yet can't invest well in mapping :(
16. tedkord posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:27 10 0
Apple believes that map data is FRAND, which they in turn believe means Free is Reasonable if Apple Needs it for Devices.
Seriously, when does Apple want to pay for anything?

It gets lost in patent fights and some in their own pockets.

Eric Schmidt -" we think we have the best product in the industry."
Yeah! Totally agreed.
Google have best product in industry.

Let’s not also forget that Schmidt sat on Apple’s board when Apple was developing the iPhone (and Google was also toying with the Android project)
The Loop‘s Jim Dalrymple put it best:
Schmidt steals whatever he can from Apple while sitting on the company’s board and then slithers away like a slug.
No wonder many people buy Steve Jobs’s argument that Android is a stolen product that lifted the look and feel and features from Apple as soon as the company unveiled the handset.

Whatever.
All I know is that Android is better than iOS.
and Apple also copy others.

At least he kept it in reality and said...we think...and not ....we have.
THATS the difference between Google and Apple.

Well, I recently activated an iPhone 4s that I bought and knocked the service off my RAZR (I bought the iphone to replace an ipod touch that developed a bluetooth problem) and a friend sent me a facebook message with an address on it. I selected the address and a window popped up, one of the options was "open with Maps" I selected it. It OPENED SAFARI AND LOOKED UP THE ADDRESS USING GOOGLE MAPS! Yes the iPhone BYPASSED ITS OWN MAPS APP IN FAVOR OF GOOGLE MAPS! Apple KNOWS they've screwed up!
On a side note, I miss my RAZR, it is sitting here on my desk on its podprop (google it) but I have to leave it off, if I turn it on the searching for a network will ice its battery in less than 12 hours. I miss the Amoled screen (great for movies while at work) and the ICS smoothness.

put that razr in airplane mode
no more searching for network

But Google maps used the most :)
Sorry to disappoint...

Nokia maps just can't compare to Google earth features of Google maps.
I had a foreign visitor yesterday and he was unsure about finding way to a certain place in my town..I took out my S3, and showed him a virtual tour over the street view, and the building itself. It was a breeze

Google maps are the best when it comes to user experience. Therefore they are mostly used.Nokia(Navteq Maps) are much older(1985) than Google maps(2005).it has large no of map database as compared to Google maps.Lets give Google some time to create whole world map database.
20. SonyXperiaNexus posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:42 4 0
Im extremely dissappointed by nokia maps coz although they are good it has absolutely low detail for my area. thats why i still use google maps.
30. jroc74 posted on 11 Oct 2012, 18:49 1 0
Put it this way:
They are both better than what Apple has to offer right now. Whoever offers free turn by turn navigation gets my vote.
Google did start making navigation and maps available off line in the last 2 years. Nokia did have a leg up on them there.
You cant go wrong with either Nokia's or Google's...but you can with Apple's.
14. rusticguy posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:26 6 0
That's such a sweet way to talk to press as compared to Bin Laden style statements (thermonuclear war.) Google let's their service do the talking more than their bosses. It would be nice to see what apple does when market forces a lower profit margin on them and that's not far off ... it's going to happen :)
21. darac posted on 11 Oct 2012, 03:56 2 0
Oh, and compare this man, and Larry and Sergey and Andy, compare them to Ballmer or Elop.. I mean come on
22. SemperFiV12 posted on 11 Oct 2012, 04:35 1 4
I dont care which is used the most, which has most distinct features... Navteq maps have more data = more mapped areas. More consistent experience. Heck Google Maps WAS USING NAVTEQ in the US and Canada not too long ago. Enough said.
Just as Apple was using Google Maps. Fanndroids will defend Google Maps, as iSheeep will soon enough defend Apple Maps. Does not change the facts, for now, Navteq is the strongest mapping agent.

Hkhmm, I think that Mr. Eric first should help Samsung pay its $1 billion fine and maybe then talk about Apple. Nokia needed more than 10 years to develop their maps, Giggle needed about 5-6, and Apple needed a liitle over 2. This, my dear Mr. Eric, is something you shoud think about, before talking rubbish.:)
27. joey_sfb posted on 11 Oct 2012, 10:33 1 0
care to explain your rational as to why Google to help Samsung pay its fine if there still one and apple will take over 2 years to get their map up on par with google map.
31. jroc74 posted on 11 Oct 2012, 22:31 0 0
Maybe Pimpple shoulda thought about that before it decided to call theirs "the most powerful mapping service ever....".
Seeing as how some Samsung devices are are getting injunctions lifted...I would hold off on that 1 billion fine talk.

What did he mean when he said "I don’t want to pre-announce products, but I can tell you that were we to do that Apple would have to approve it."?
