Electricity from Apple iPhone shocks Australian woman, leaving her hospitalized

0. phoneArena 27 Jul 2013, 16:43 posted on

Just last week, we told you how Apple had added a page to its Chinese website showing how consumers in the country could protect themselves from electrocution by making sure that their chargers were official Apple parts; that response by Apple came after a 23 year old Chinese woman allegedly was killed after being electrocuted by her Apple iPhone 5, and a 30 year old man supposedly went into a coma after being shocked by an Apple iPhone 4...

I dont think so
The galaxy s3 that injured a girl had third-party battery and these iphones had third-party chargers
That only garantees for anyone who read these articles that third-party components are not consistent or reliable...

Wtf are you talking about? Every incident recently has had to do with unauthorized third party accossories. There's unfortunately a lot of people out there looking to make a quick buck selling a counterfeit, and they don't care about how safe they make it. It's not an excuse, it's just the universally accepted standard of liability: Apple, Samsung, whoever is not to blame for someone else making an unsafe knockoff.

Apple address, and handle the situation. Have them send in the defective device, test and replace it. If its widespread, do a recall. If not replace the units and cover the medical bills.

Nope I'm not a sith, and you're an idiot for continuing to say that. I'm a grown man about to be married, go play the sith game with someone else. It's apples responsibility to investigate and handle the issue appropriately. Your screen name says it all, go away. One more thing, the lady in this article isn't dead fool. And again, wow, your post was so unnecessary (and actually made me cringe a lil bit), Apple will take care of it without your input, thx

Apple will take care of it alright.. by issuing a press statement "use authorized chargers".

The will then follow up with something along the lines of "You aren't holding the phone correctly!"

I'm with Darkjedi on this one.. Apple needs to aggressively research this issue, 3rd party chargers or not.

Why don't we see massive shock issues with Android phones? I imagine the use of 3rd party chargers with android phones is MASSIVE given they use the industry standard micro USB chargers.

Apple needs to identify root cause and determine if there is anything they can do design-wise to ensure that consumers are protected from electric shock, regardless of the brand of charger.

Emergency aid calls are usually counted as calls for service and counted as how many times an emergency response was needed. So if 10 people call about a woman being shocked and an ambulance responds to a location 1 time, it would be counted as 1 call. This is generally true for police, fire, and EMS.

I think he is saying the risk is greater, not that it's a given. I think he is saying that if there is a design flaw in the iPhone, then the metal case is only going to make it worse. HTC might not have the same flaw. Just being metal isn't going to do anything.

Maybe, but somehow I think Xperias are safer, because they're rugged. I mean, I don't know the causes of the ladies' misfortunes, but if I were to bet, I'd bet on "wet hair on electrified contacts" combo, which will short-circuit the device, thus electrifying and damaging the long haired person (usually women)

Anything is possible, people are both greedy and dumb. Have any lawsuits been filed yet though? And even if they have, don't they realize that the fine print that and lawyers fees from fighting Big Money corporations make this an uphill battle. And then there's the whole, you know, electrocution thing.

I know, I know... I'll just refer myself to my first sentence in this post.

I tend to think like anything else, once attention is brought to something you start to realize how wide spread a problem can be.

I don't know how you force your phone to shock you. You can go buy a cheap charger and try to do it. But is it worth risking your life? And besides I doubt you would win any lawsuit from Apple for using a product that is not authorized to be used with their product.

I can believe it because aluminum is conductor. A crappy third party charger without proper grounding could cause all types of issues. The correct thing for Apple to do is to make these cables/chargers more affordable.
