ESPN: Apple iPad to be used by the NFL to diagnose concussions on the field next season

0. phoneArena 24 Feb 2013, 15:21 posted on

With 160 such injuries last year, concussions are a hot-button issue for the NFL and the league plans on distributing a special iPad app to each team which will allow them to test each player and receive a baseline score; in the case of a big hit, the player will be tested right on the sidelines using the tablet which could diagnose a concussion right on the spot...

That's cool and hopefully there's an app that tells someone in the Rams office to get a WR so Bradford can throw the damn ball!

The rams may get Mike Wallace from my beloved Steelers. If you guys get him, that's an instant deep threat.

He won't come cheap, but he will perform. The sheer speed, and sure hands is worth it.

Fishers no non sense, and mikes a bit of a prima donna... You're probably rite. Didn't he cut one of key players just last week?

Yes, because an app is more qualified to diagnose a serious injury than, y'know, DOCTORS.

F*cking apple, just when you think they can't get any more pretentious...

I'm not a huge Apple fan, but this isn't really anything you can blame on Apple. If the app had been designed for Android (for all I know it may be available) the article could have easily been about the NFL using Samsung Note tablets. It's just down to the NFL choosing which device they want to trial this on.

Well said man, it's just business. It's not about android vs iOS, the NFL chose what it chose. Watch the flame war that goes on due to this article.

Yea....I dont care what device they use. Whatever helps, I'm all for it.

And I dont think anyone in their right mind would replace....yknow...the actual doctors on the sidelines now....with an iPad. This is just an extra tool. From the article:

"a new app for the Apple iPad that can help team doctors diagnose concussions right after impact."

"While the app will help doctors more easily come to a diagnosis of a concussion, Seattle Seahawks team doctor Stanley Herring says that Doctors will still have to use their training and trust their instincts and observations as well."

I didnt even read the whole article to know this isnt replacing doctors on the sidelines....its called advances in technology.

Exactly... The keyword is tool. Just who do people think will be using the tools...doctors. I'm all for it, cuz these guys are so big, and strong now and the hits are so crushing... Anything to help them is worth it.

Bro anything to do with apple no matter who much it can, or will help he'll attack and degrade. It's just what he does. He's stuck in the stupid iOS vs android thing so bad he doesn't know when to leave it alone. To pull it off of the web and into real life is plain ridiculous. The NFL is using iPads to help doctors help diagnose head trauma. How could you possibly be against that? Your pissed cuz it's an iPad, instead of an android tablet. I wonder if he's an NFL'er, dr, head coach, or team owner? In other words if you're not associated with the NFL why would it even matter one bit?

The thumb downs are from idiots not being able to relate on that higher level. Leave iOS vs android where it's supposed to be, on those small insignificant levels. People buy what phones they want. The Commissioner is trying to help players, and along with apple and the medical industry...they just may be able to do so. Kudos to all 3 for taking player safety more seriously. Now MLB needs to address come backers by providing head gear to pitchers.

To me the most important factor is that if the (obviously very skilled) NFL doctors approve this it could be used in high schools and colleges. These are places where it could be a lot more valuable than at an NFL game as the on site medical provision is unlikely to be at the same level,

As for the thumbs down, I've never understood why loads of comments get thumbed down on here. I get the fan boy/offensive ones but I see rational, impartial and sensible comments get thumbed down all the time. It's as if someone sees the subject of the article so instantly thumbs down every comment on it.

I agree with your entire post bro. High school, and college would benefit even more being as young as they are, and having little no on site medical.

Go to bed man. And it is something new, every player that's possibly helped out by this. It'll be something new to them.

Yeah, because there's no way they could have just found this app to be useful and it happens to be on an iPad. I mean everyone knows they're just toys and you can't do one thing useful with it. Clearly Apple paid the NFL and Phonearena, oops I mean iPhonearena, because every article is so clearly biased and only iFans read their articles. Dur.

Wow with the content of this article, this is what you came up with? Childishness at its worst. How about you be an adult, put your money where your mouth is, and prove apple paid the NFL. And as far as the iPad being a toy that you can't do one useful thing with, it has a great chase mobile banking app. Last I checked paying your bills was pretty useful, and important. Grow up dude...please.

What I've noticed, and I'm being real. I notice that all of you're posts have you putting lol or lmao in them. I also notice that hardly anyone pays you any attention. People don't thumb you up, or down nor do they even reply to the stuff you type. I've been looking over several of you're posts cuz they're so childish, and I notice no responses whatsoever. You're a complete joke on this site, the stuff you type like you can't wait to see apples stock fall another 300$ is kid stuff. You lend no credence to anything, and I think that's one of the reasons people don't bother with you. I'm not a little kid that's gonna continue to go back, and forth with you, cuz it's not worthy of my time. You're the type that's on this site just to irritate people, and make enemies of them. I see straight thru you by what you constantly post. I don't have time for the crap you post so respond to this as you like it doesn't matter. I'm a grown man and won't be bothered by the likes of you.
