Dutch judge says Apple's patent on "slide to unlock" is probably invalid

0. phoneArena 25 Aug 2011, 18:23 posted on

The same Dutch judge that ordered the preliminary injunction against the sale of three Samsung handsets due to the patent infringement on three Apple patents, is saying that the "slide to unlock" patent that Apple holds is "not inventive" and therefore probably not valid...

Just look at the phones pre and post iphone. Iphone's influence is very obvious. Everyone is copying Apple. Microsoft is even putting up Windows stores looking just like Apple stores.

Higher specs does not equal better products. The iphone's 5mp camera has bested several phones with 8mp cameras. The iphone 3gs responds much smoother than some phones with dual core processors.

imitated? more like intimidated. and let's face the facts. It's hard to come up with something new for any company. whether it be apple, samsung, htc, nokia, or whoever else. there will always be similarities. I'm not a fandroid, isheep, or any other name you can think of. i just think that if a company has patents, they should try to work on enforcing them, but not to the point where if affects future technology and who has the right to use it. Apple, Google, and any other company will have to see each other as a possible threat to their business. don't just sprout what you believe apple does, how they are, or what they think. I like apple devices, android devices, windows devices, and many others. but thinking of one OS as the overall one to be imitated is kind of just a load of bull. Apple gets patents on stuff so they can use it to their advantage. every company does that. Not just apple. so the next time you talk about a device bieng superrior, always remember, there is always something new coming out and nobody will have a product ahead of the rest so long as technology continues to grow. They are businesses, not a lifestyle choice. dont use an operatin system, company, or product just to talk trash.

Apple was able to come up with fresh ideas. The others should come up with their own. What the others are doing is, they're riding on to Apple's success and to what Apple has worked hard for. They saw the iphone and the ipad's phenomenal success, and then they're like, "Oh, let's go make one just like that".

i see... iOS does seem smoother when you dont have alot of stuff running. but my iPod touch lags alot and freezes(its 8 gigs). lets see what iOS5 and ICS have to bring to the table. lets resume our arguments at that time.

Nah, I don't believe you. IDevices are generally known to be smooth devices, not laggy like android devices are known for.

I'm trying to tell you that you cant call a patent on something like a smartphone such as slide to unlock when almost every damn phone does it. Apple did not come up with the idea for a phone, and you act like wvery invention was inspired by apple. Every company gets inspiration to improve their products from other companies. Apple must have got their ideas from other people, not just everything they do is like magic. They're going to use the notification bar exactly like android. and they even stole wifi sync from someone that tried to make it an app. They even showed that apple made fake photos of the galaxy tab and galaxy s 2 just to get them banned. I like their products, but as a company you should not have to forge product photos and evidence to prove your point. All they want is MONEY. They have more cash than the US Government, and they still make more money every millisecond. Yet they still want to stop other companies from selling their products. Apple needs does not make their own products, other companies do. and the small percentage that they do make, can likely be just an add on. Don't think of Apple as main company unless you can see every fact of what they do right and wrong. And trust me, like almost every company, they've done plenty wrong.

@bigeaze. You said every smartphone has slide to unlock? Since when? How many smartphones have slide to unlock before 2007? Inventions are not the only ones that can be patented. Innovations and iterations from an invention can also be patented. I guess that is what you are missing. You think that only inventions can be patented, not innovations. A lot of technologies and features found on the iphone are not their inventions. Some they have acquired licences to use, some they have innovated on. They did not use those licensed technology without paying fees for it. That's another thing that you are missing. You probably think that everyone just uses licensed tech without paying fees for it or without getting permission from the one who owns it. Fyi, Microsoft and Nokia are big earners when it comes to collecting licensing fees from other OEM's, including Apple. You didn't know that huh, because you think that everyone just uses whatever tech they like to use, lol. Also, if Apple then plenty wrong, how were they able to be this hugely successful? Common sense please. Plenty of wrong equals to disaster and failure. Plenty of right means huge success.

Oh... So... I guess my ipod touch is an(other) isolated case. I have a 32gb one and it freakin' lags and sometimes even freezes in the middle of apps. Even simple apps like the freakin' native camera ain't so smooth!

Mine's a 4th gen and it does get laggy like yours. Even entering the 4-digit lock code becomes a problem sometimes!

**I'm still waiting on the release of the iPhone 5 and the rumored cheap iPhone 4 though.. Want to see which between iOS5 and ICS is better. I do like the iDevices' designs.

Please check reviews for iDevices. You'll never see one that says that it lags or that it's unresponsive, or that it freezes. There are several ones for android devices though. Also, check LEGITIMATE AND OFFICIAL satisfaction surveys. iDevices scored significantly higher than any android devices. Unfortunately, anyone in here can just make up stuff. However, those official surveys and reviews are dependable and more trustworthy than what android fanboys post on here.

are you implying that im lying? I know it's hard to believe but yes, My iPod touch 3rd generation 8gb lags and freezes. its not uncommon. too bad it doesnt have a replaceable battery because sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to finally force close the application(go to the homescreen).
what am i suppose to do until then? i plug it in, i old the power buttons, volume rockers, home button indifferent combinations but it doesnt do anything to help.

i guess you must be ''lying'' ios never crashes, never lags and never has security issues(lol thats where jailbreaks come from)..i have both the ip4 and the galaxy s2 and my android phone has NEVER lagged on me and my ip4 has lagged but barely but that probably has to do with the fact that mines is jailbroken..all am saying is that just cause some android devices lag that does not mean they all do so when you hear someone say there android does not not lag or has good battery, dont jump to conclusion assuming they are lying. remember battery life etc also depends on how the user uses its device and what they have installed on it..i love both os's but if i am honest, if i could not jailbreak the iphone than i would not consider it because without jailbreak the iphone is too restrictive..some are happy with the restriction and some are not..so to all fanboys of any os, there is no need to hate on others because they prefare something else. we should all be happy that there is choices out there..

yes but i doubt the reviewers really fill the memory up..my jailbroken ip6 16gb has lagged a few times but as i have stated before it might be due to jailbreak but also the fact that i have used up 11 gigs

@reading. There is a big probability that you are lying. Anyone can make up stories in here just to give a bad impression of their hated device.

Apple has a genius bar. You're ipod is defective. Go make an appointment and they will replace it with a new one :)

@taz. No device is perfect. Near perfect, yes, but perfect, no. So how can you tell which device works better? By looking at satisfaction surveys, and reviews, and how consistent their reviews and surveys are. You, an unknown, can say that your iDevice lags all day, but if professional reviews consistently says that the iphone is the most stable device, backed by very high customer satisfaction ratings, it is very likely that you are just making things up. If you say that your android device never lagged or crash, but reviews CONSISTENTLY say that it lags, and it is backed by a not so high customer satisfaction ratings, then again, you're probably lying about the awesomeness of your android device. Be smart. Don't believe stories told by bloggers here in the comments section. Read legitimate reviews and surveys.

@taz. So you did tamper with your iDevice. That is whybtamoeringis never recommended. Because obviously, you do not know what you're doing. Because if you do, then it shouldn't lag :)

@bigeaze. Yes, but there is no animation when you unlock it. It's a different implementation of the gesture. Anyway. It is really up to the court to decide. But it is BS to say that Samsung got their idea from Neonode and not from iphone.

Apple really needs to stop this. Really immature. And to all you Apple fanatics, go f*ck yourselfs if you think Apple creates the world.

Apple did not create the world. But they definitely created a trend that caused everyone else to imitate them. And of course, since you do not like Apple, but like what they've done to their devices, you don't want the imitating to stop, because you want it on your decice as well :)

I am sorry but please gemini...

Your point makes no sense in the real world... Imitation happens in EVERY market. Trends are created followed, recreated and re-followed.

The complaints Apple has brought up are mostly these types of items. The reason why 90% of them so far are being thrown out.

I guess you will be the first one to demand Apple remove the notification bar from iOS... Remove multi-tasking... And when Apple does get a "home" screen and widgets.

I will be waiting for that day Gemini...
