Display Comparison: Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X vs Nokia Lumia 900

0. phoneArena posted on 05 Oct 2012, 05:13

It’ll be interesting to see how they fall fare against one another – to hopefully proclaim the best one out of the bunch! In order to make that final call, we’re going to go beyond the hardware specs and see how they perform in real world situations, since you know, that’s exactly what matters most...

S-LCD 2 wins it for me. Though it will be interesting to see S-LCD 2 goes against a 300+ ppi model of the new RGB SA HD display. Come on Samsung, we need a comparison between the top dogs of displays, and it needs to be a fair fight.

why are they using the 900 and not the 920? the 920 from what I understand has a screen that blows the iPhone5 out of the water.

A more valid comparison should be:

Yawn...no surprise there. Anyway, I'd put them in the following order:
1. iP5
2. HTC 1X
3. SG3
4. Lumia 900
If Lumia 920 were there, I'd put it first, though. It is amazing.

Where were the Xperias, where they had the highest pixel density, and Bravia Engine 2?
Plese update the article!

54. maxican16 posted on 05 Oct 2012, 10:46

I find it odd PA posts this, but removes the post they had about the SIII screen being better. Rather odd move PA, no?

(how do I know they made a post, then subsequently removed it? saw it on PA's twitter stream)

55. rusticguy posted on 05 Oct 2012, 10:46 1

When i pay $500 less for a GSIII i can see that GSIII performs far better. Why should i zoom text on a responsive design site? Why should i visit a non responsive design site visit a non responsive site on a mobile in any case? Do these tetsts on a site likehttp://bostonglobe.com (which is responsive) with no zooming. When the experiments are designed to achieve results that one would like to achieve then such experiments are part of what is known as JUNK Science :)

I hope PA will do another shot at testing displays some month after when Nokia Lumia 920 and LG Optimus G will be in the world. Will You? If not, then I look at this test as last second chance to show Iphone's 5 dominance as with those handsets, this will be not so buttery. Take alone Lumia 920. Pixels per inch is greater value as Iphone's 5.

60. r41nier posted on 05 Oct 2012, 11:29

Actually the iPhone is not oversaturated since it is calibrated to around 100% SRGB color gamut. Maybe the author was used to low quality notebook displays as well as other displays available today which is around 60%-70% of the SRGB color gamut. Maybe he thought that those low quality display is the "right" color that's why he said it is oversaturated. SGS3 and Lumia 900 AMOLED screen are oversaturated by so much. Even though the SGS3's vibrance can be adjusted in the display to reduce the saturation, it is not calibrated to the SRGB color space.
Professional photographers and digital artists that also use their smartphones at work would probably choose a color accurate screen or at least a screen that can easily be calibrated to different color space like SRGB or Adobe RGB.

Where is the Nokia Lumia 920?

64. Blitz_Panzer posted on 05 Oct 2012, 11:52 2

The small screen of the iPhone5 helps his "high" pixel density...

1.- HTC One X
2.- iPhone5
3.- SGIII
4.- Lumia 900

65. jdot104 posted on 05 Oct 2012, 12:10 1

This comparison would've been much fairer to Nokia if Phone Arena had used a 920 instead of a 900. It's an obvious leap in technology.

66. darkdroid posted on 05 Oct 2012, 12:22 1

hate to tell but this article looks so biased ...everything comes after iphone 5 regardless anything

67. animeware posted on 05 Oct 2012, 12:41

What about Samsung Galaxy Note I would like to see compareson with it on this too?

70. wando77 posted on 05 Oct 2012, 14:20 1

Why is the iPhone 5 being compared to these MUCH OLDER phones. Surely the galaxy note 2 should be in there along with the lumia 920. Pretty sure they're both better than the iPhone 5 (in the words of phone arena the GN2 addresses ALL of amoled's problems)

127. babyk posted on 14 Oct 2012, 08:19

put it against the htc one x plus isnt it the same with original htc one x? Super LCD 2 Wins HTC ONE X and HTC ONE X PLUS

74. mohitmk21 posted on 05 Oct 2012, 15:32

They should have included Lumia 920 instead of 900 in the comparison

75. bucky posted on 05 Oct 2012, 15:33 2

Sgs3 screen is nice but the pentile stands no chance against the one x and iPhone 5

84. ikkuh posted on 06 Oct 2012, 06:29 1

I dont care about PPI higher then 250 PPI. I do care about the size and contrast. So for me there's a clear winner: SGS3

even though i switched to an iphone 5, i'm glad to see android products stepping up. I think that in the next 1 or 2 years, android phones will become as user friendly as iphones. maybe then i'll switch back to one.

102. chemo posted on 07 Oct 2012, 15:45

Before I bought an ipad, I was mostly anti-Apple.. Why, I don't know.. Perhaps it was because I was a contented user of Windows computers and thought of Apple as the "other camp" who made super-user-friendly products for dummies... Anyways, fast-forward, I must say I love my ipad. Its well-made and has made me a dummy for all the fun it provides! I've come to like Apple as a company that makes good-looking, good quality products. I also own a Nokia Lumia 900 phone. I bought it because I fell in love with the way it looks, from the hardware design to the fluidity in response, to the lively tiles flipping back and forth as if the phone were alive, to the beautiful fonts, etc. There is just something very artistic about this phone and the display? Images look amazing on it although specs say otherwise.. I love looking at images on the Lumia's display; so much so - I download lots of images and photos on the phone and sometimes just get carried away looking at them one after another, it's hypnotizing.... Am I sad, angry, disappointed that the Lumia 900 ended up last in the heap in this review? Hmmm, somehow, not at all....

111. firefly posted on 08 Oct 2012, 17:25

The part you are glossing over is that yes the iJunk (all inclusive of apple products) is user friendly-ish, for people who have never used windows or other based software.

I own an iPad 3, not for convenience or simplicity, simply for screen resolution for using remote desktop to access pc's I'm not at. My home pc has an HPZR30w with 2560 x 1600 native resolution. It looks like crap and you can't read anything on my 1080p laptop screen and my 19" laptop is built for traveling and still being able to do work, game, etc. and is super inconvenient to use to work in a car/plane/train. Apple way overcharges because their computer/iPad cases look nice and they know if they put their logo on it herds of sheep will flock to purchase it and be completely ok with pay 2-3 times more for the same guts as a competitor in a somewhat less attractive box. Now that I have defended owning an iPad 3 and spoken my mind about apple products in general, to my point...

If you ever go to an electronics store and stare at a wall of flat screen tv's you rarely notice a huge difference, except when they are vastly different tech i.e. LCD vs Plasma vs LED. 9 times out of 10 the only reason to get new is if the old breaks, but be realistic, if you are buying top of the line tech it is to have the cool new feature or simply to say you have the latest and greatest. I am a techie and buy new phones way to often. If it lasts a year, I'm thrilled, but typically I buy a new phone every time a see one that has new stuff I want or a pretty new design... Droid, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, Incredible 2, Droid Bionic, Droid Razr, Galaxy Nexus, GS III, Droid Razr Maxx HD...

103. javorr posted on 07 Oct 2012, 19:33

Yes, John V. is an apple fan.
Xperia SL with 342 ppi is not in the review . Xperia P 275 ppi, with the white magic display.
Compare only with the old Nokia phone, no LG phones… this is not a realistic comparison.
Poor selection of phones and at the end iPhone is the best.

104. preet27in posted on 07 Oct 2012, 23:47 1

well guyss we r comparing the displays but look at the screen size of iphone? it is obvious that small screens will have better ppi but if u take a look at screen size of htc one x and its display and the ppi, its clear that there is NO MATCH for HTC ONE X. its a clear winner.despite of being a giant screen its display quality and ppi is damn better than iphone. look at iphone, man they r not able to generate better displays on bigger screens. and did u all notice something??? iphone just increased the length but not the breadth of their phone and that length too isnt enough.4.0 inces???? u crazy????/?? its looks like a kid's toy in ur hands. but THE ONE X.... just rocks and looks sooo premium in quality. htc u rock...... cheers. and sorry for apple fanboyss.

Though it's a relatively old device, I think that you guys should include the HTC Rezound in these display comparisons. It has a 4.3in 720p S-LCS display with a PPI of 342. It seems to be the "forgotten sheep" of the devices that have come out with 720p displays.

121. larvin72 posted on 13 Oct 2012, 06:34 1

I used to think that writers and editors of sites like these are pretty much unbiased and objective in their approach and delivery when reviewing products TO GIVE THE PUBLIC AN UNBIASED OBJECTIVE VIEW SO THAT THEY MAY BE HELPED IN THEIR DECISIONS WHEN CHOOSING AMONGST SIMILARLY GOOD PRODUCTS. This review was made October 5, 2012, barely a month after the iphone 5 was released. Mr. John V reviewed the best that Apple has to offer against the second best of Samsung (Obviously the best Samsung display is with the Note 2), the third best of Nokia (Nokia's best is with the 920) and the best of HTC. No wonder a lot of people disagree with the conclusions because THE REVIEW WAS FAR FROM FAIR. I hope the editors of this site would remain unbiased and objective so that people would continue to read your works.

123. polichem2002 posted on 14 Oct 2012, 02:50

Whoever made this display comparison obviously had an agenda. Either he's playing ignorant or ignorant at all. Why do you compare the display of the iPhone 5 e fullover those with obviously beatable handsets? Why do you compare a phone with 326 PPI with those with less pixel density? Why not compare it with say. Sony xperia s which had 342 PPI? If you want to prove that the iPhone really bests in all respects like the display category then compare it with the one which already had the numbers and prove that the numbers are pointless.

Obviously phonearena will not compare the display of the iPhone 5 and that of the sony xperia s is because they dont want to humiliate the former. The comparison will then be lopsided in favor of the latter.

129. AS147 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 21:42

Its hardly a fair comparison putting up the iPhone 5 against the previous generation Lumia 900. The Lumia 920 is the current model and the article should compare against that to be more accurate.

The Lumia has a 768 x 1280 pixel, 4.5 inche, 332 ppi pixel density display

well yes maybe the colors are more clear in the iphone
but please most of this phones cannot even reach even half of IPhone full brightness

131. larvin72 posted on 24 Oct 2012, 18:24

you were correct kboo1995, "most of these phones cannot even reach half of iphone full brightness" because none of them is nokia 920 nor htc j butterfly.
