Did Nokia fake the still photos too?

Yesterday, our eagle-eyed commenters were among the first to notice a weird reflection on what everyone was led into thinking to be sample video footage of the Nokia Lumia 920…

This would be relevant except for the fact that there are videos out already showing Nokia folks actually taking pictures at Nokia World against the iPhone 4s and SGS3, and making them both look bad.

They didn't switch on flash in either the S3 or 4S, the S3 has one of the brightest flashes I have ever seen!
In short, Nokia's new announcements suck... and WP8 looks cluttered
11. MENillli posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:32 14
The flash is to detect the ISO, so in a sense they ARE using flash, but didn't take it with it, checkmate fanboy

HDR. Heard of it? If not, learn it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've thought about this new PureView tech on low mega pixels sensors. HDR.

the g3 has one of the brightest flashes you have ever seen??one of maybe but NOT THE BRIGHTEST!!!i have a almost 5 year old nokia N82 the very first phone with a xenon flash and i have put it up against my best friends SGS 3 and my camera takes the most natural looking pics without all the saturation that seems to be some sort of trend among cellphone makers these days mainly IOS and ANDROID and dont even get me started about which one takes the better pic at night because my xenon flash blows away ALL phones that use AN LED OR DOUBLE LED!!enough said. CHECK PLEASE!!LOL!!
65. wassup posted on 06 Sep 2012, 09:05 1
OK I think you're getting me wrong, I'm comparing LED flashes, let's see you use that xenon flash as a torchlight.
So please, accept that Nokia cheated on their shootout, video, and pics ..
Also, I'm not saying that their phones aren't good, but, they cheated on their ads and stuff, which is wrong.
Not surprised though, Microsoft and Nokia have a history of cheating.

This not an isolated incident, Nokia has a track record of exaggeration for quite some time now. Everybody still remembers what Nokia said and did with Lumia 900.
40. andro. posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:41 4
Nokia is in a state of desperation, they've jumped aboard a ship which was half submerged even before they got onboard and is doomed. Wp sales are disasterous and while other manufacturers make their sales and innovations in other fields like android Nokia is chained to Microsoft. When the lamia 800 launched we had exaggerated sales expectations given to us from Nokia reps, despite their claims only a hand full sold
31. dr_fajardo12 posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:19 4
im a nokia fan and i need to say that is fake. if the cellphone needs to flash before take the picture in low light, how in hell behind the girl is so shiny?.
nokia didnt have time to put more MP in lumia 920 (8.7? common), neither to finish the phone.
36. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:34 0
Nokia may have used the software to achieve some improvement, but I guess the result is not this good.
49. Yositokotukukita posted on 06 Sep 2012, 07:32 4
Not saying that it was taken with the Nokia, but I use a Nikon DSLR and when I take night portraits it uses flash to freeze the subject and uses slow shutter speed to get lots of light from the background, and so giving such type of effect... But then it needs a strong flash to do so and I'm not sure that this mobile has what it takes in that department.

No wonder, their market share dropped drastically.

Nokia should get the phones out to the blogs for reviews ASAP to settle this.
64. joey_sfb posted on 06 Sep 2012, 09:00 0
I suspect he may be Nokia leak. Get Nokia desperate enough to sell all their patent IP to Microsoft for a song.
4. MENillli posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:21 7
This is what you get from a biased fandroid webpage
66. joey_sfb posted on 06 Sep 2012, 09:12 1
Fandroid come from somewhere before android and most are Nokia supporter.
Nokia have been having a string of bad luck ever since Elop take over as CEO, one could only wonder is that purely coincidental.
Anyway, hope Nokia and Lumia do well for the coming months.

Against, Nokia showing that their years have past, go Android and you'll see real innovation
38. chaoticrazor posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:35 4

26. p0rkguy posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:11 2
They wanted to showcase OIS mode on the 920, which they didn't.
They may have showed OIS but it wasn't on the 920. Why should people buy the 920? Why not get the same product that did showcase OIS? Are the not the same? Is OIS on the 920 butchered down or something?
48. whysoserious posted on 06 Sep 2012, 07:30 2
Well if their goal is to show the OIS technology of the phone, then why can't they just take the pictures and videos using the phone itself? It's just as simple as that.
13. muhsen posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:34 2
this is too much. the CONSPIRACY theory went too far by this.just go to Gizmodo.com and everyone will see the definitive proof that the lumia 920 is awesome.

why don't we analyze the pixels of the photos to see if they r taken from outer space.
the cam of lumia 920 is the best(except for the 808 of course), now move on and enough of this crap
22. poddey posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:02 6
Don't be so quick to dismiss something just because you don't like what you are hearing. The photo in the link you provided was taken with flash off on all 3 phones apparently but while the other two phones didn't use flash at all, the 920 turned on its flash to focus but I believe it was also sampling photos in the process which is why the final image is so bright, particular in the middle, which is just how a photo would look when using LED flash.
29. p0rkguy posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:16 2
The die hard Nokia fanboys are strong.
The moment I saw light I said the same thing the guy said in the video.
"HDR works by combining a few images into one, usually two or three photos will be used and sometimes more. It works by combining images with different exposure values, and then uses the correctly exposed portion will be combined into the final image."
This is the same concept as Apple's "retina display", another marketing term for Nokia.
34. poddey posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:29 2
Yeah, strong or blind - see what I did there? :)
62. SleepingOz posted on 06 Sep 2012, 08:54 1

14. koolkat-uk posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:35 3
Phonearena needs to shut up! i checked the camera out yesterday at the conference. Its a revolution in technology. the motion blurring is amazing. we were comparing it with the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S3, the 920 obliterated both even looked better than my nikon dslr in low light.
30. rainyday posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:16 4
are you sure you wasn't in a van with DSLR in your hands?
15. Stoli89 posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:36 4
I can imagine the Nokia PureView engineers must be supremely pissed off at the marketing guru who decided this video should be pulbished at all...and without a discalimer to boot!
The technology itself is stunning...real time examples after the announcement reveal a tech that has a significant and measurable benefit to real life situations and for average users. It's a big deal...but again...the Nokia marketing team screwed it up. I hope someone at a very senior level in that department gets canned because this is just another example of great product with crappy marketing.
16. kamil posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:38 1
oh come on man give nokia some slack most people use their camera phones to take picture of themselves and other stuff not so much on the city lights well maybe but damn man if i got the phone i wont be looking at the background so much i'll be looking at my face with a whole of zits nokia all the way and bring sony along these 2 companies makes some of the best camera phones in town so respect
17. Evil_SaNz posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:46 5

18. 12Danny123 posted on 06 Sep 2012, 05:46 3
I swear to god. Phonearena needs to shut up. For once. Those pictures are real. Stop being pathetic phonearena. There is solid proof it's real photos
32. snowgator posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:26 1
Nokia will respond, Danny, and just like the video I expect them to be upfront.
This whole announcement seemed like it was snake-bit. From all the tech errors with the screen, the disappointment there wasn't more about WP 8, Ballmer mispronouncing Nokia's name about three times (Nawk-eea??), and then having to eat a little pride about the "girl on the bike" video, I am sure this is an event they wish they could have back.
Lost in the hoopla were some really good devices with what may be the best camera tech, an exciting and fun new version of a seamless OS, and just a dozen other strengths to help it along.
39. poddey posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:37 1
Actually I think it is pronounced like that, with the first syllable sounding more like "knock" than "no"... which means Ballmer does the better job of pronouncing the name than Elop, the company's own CEO.
23. shadez10 posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:03 1
This is why i dont really trust 100% phonearena... There are some bias things going on here...
28. remixfa posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:15 3
they should have put a big disclaimer on the video. That really disappoints me. I guess ill wait for the commercial side by side comparisons.
33. snowgator posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:27 1
There will be no faking them. I expect the 920 to hold up, but we will see.
53. remixfa posted on 06 Sep 2012, 08:11 2
I hope it does. That video got me really excited for the tech. Finding out that it was fake is a big balloon popper for me... boo.
I really liked the still shots of the people in the city. I was thinking of 1001 uses for that. phphph
42. Droid_X_Doug posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:55 0
It certainly was a biffed presentation. I too am now going to wait until non-staged reviews are done with real-world shipping samples. Combined with no ship date or sell price, is there any surprise Nokia's share price shed 16% after the event?
35. xsymbian posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:29 4
Elop failed again with these new Windows 8 phones. How can a CEO lie so much? Cosumers need real samples of videos/photos, not fake professional eye-candy edited videos/photos . Nokia Board please fire Stephen Elop . Your company will be bankrupt in no-time. You need a new CEO that brings what people want: Android on Nokia phones. You need to invest in multiple platfoms. People associate Windows brand with FAILURE, because of its multiple problems (black screens, etc.) and hard-to use interfaces. Bring the future today.
37. Evil_SaNz posted on 06 Sep 2012, 06:35 1
Facts: 1) the 920 may still be a nice phone 2) the photos were fake if you thought they were taken from the 920 3) Stop it with this bias fable, because Nokia apologized and posted real 920 footagehttp://youtu.be/6HSbhyaH0vw?hd

When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, they were straight with the claims for the camera of the 4S - they published actual photos and videos taken with a 4S. Nokia couldn't meet the same standard and is getting slammed for it. President Harry Truman had a saying (I am paraphrasing slightly) - can't stand the heat? Then get out of the kitchen!
Nokia needs to decide whether it wants to play in today's smartphone business. If the answer is yes, then they need to bring their A game.
