Did LG just pull a Samsung? LG Optimus G specs review and comparison vs Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X
0. phoneArena 18 Sep 2012, 02:10 posted on
If LG has managed to finally escape the stigmata of subpar cameras and wimpy loudspeakers of its flagship handsets with the Optimus G, it has every chance to turn what is already the best-spec'd Android phone on paper, into a truly formidable device that others, including Samsung, will have to look up to this holiday season...

Good stuff coming out from LG and this can only be good for Android users around the world especially now that Apple has declared War against Samsung.

It's got the specs, now LG needs to have a great marketing strategy. Somehow I feel that the Note 2 will be a jumbo S3 - a disappointment. LG Optimus G will be my next phone, unless HTC have a ace up their sleeves.

the only thing that wouldn't make me go for an LG is their lack of support for their phones. i also don't like their UI which in my own opinion looks very much like TouchWiz. good spec'ed phone though.

Yes PhoneArena, we get it, you're on LG's payroll now. Let's not forget, however, that you're comparing this to SIX MONTH OLD FLAGSHIPS. It would be astounding if neither Samsung or HTC came out with a new competitor within a month of this phone.

after a bad experience with an lg optimus black. i was going to go with a htc one x but this might make me wait but in australia we have to wait 1-2 months for anything to get released if it ever comes to our shores, we don't get the 4x hd, some sony flagships, htc one s (1.5 ghz s4) we get the s3 version.

Absolutely formidable promise by LG.
And a bold move going straight against the iPhone 5..at least it should be able to win the comparison tests and best phone charts, while being crushed by the iPhone and galaxy sales. That's something to begin with.

The front design looks like the Sony Xperia GX design

I wish they still made 4.3 inch high end phones :(
57. XiphiasGladius (Posts: 807; Member since: 21 Aug 2011)
Whoa. . . I'm impressed. but frankly what LG needs to copy from other other manufacturers is not the hardware part or even the design part, but the sotfware support part, it takes a millenium for their phone to get updated, even their 2011 flagship itself the Optimus 2x is a testament to that. How'd they expect to gain solid followings with that kind of antics?
moving on, I have an obvious hunch that LG is the first costumer of SONY's touted new 13mp HDR capable mobile camera module.

When it comes to update LG is a very very LAZY BOY... But for everything else, Optimus G seems better...

sounds nice but i only hope the 2100 battery will fair well :)

People should be be patient and see what HTC and Samsung even the new iPhone got to offer before even thinking about this phone, I just don't trust lg when it comes to phone this is just the the first step out the gate for next generation phone I bet HTC and Samsung next flagship is way better than this and they might be only coming out a few months after

Still prefer s3, this has got cool hardware but s3 will still beat it when it comes to software.

I think it's a very sexy phone. Between all three designs, they all have its fan base. So we can argue all day and still don't have a clear winner (it's art... we can never get it). But the spec is monster, and I would love to see the amazing screen it has.

Well damn. looks like a bomb just droppe.d

If LG can get over the hump with their lacluster software updates, and increase their build quality with device, they could put themselves back on the map as a serious competitor in the Smartphone game. I hope they pull it off, we need another serious entity out there. The more innovation the better.
123. maverick786us (Posts: 137; Member since: 20 Apr 2012)
I think this should give a very STIFF competition to Galaxy S3 and overall Samsung in Android race.

Now that I know it's possible, I'm convinced the next Nexus will have these specs.

You guys debate over who made what? How? When? Which?
I'll watch drool over it...:P

The two things I care for the most in a phone are the camera, and the battery life. So, I have an upgrade coming soon, is it worth getting this phone? Or will Sony will be releasing a phone with the same specs? Because I know Sony makes the best mobile cameras today. Also their battery life is better? I know the XPERIA T has a dual core processor, will a quad-core XPERIA come?
107. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4154; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
No quad Xperia is expected as far as I know. Probably won't see one until later this year, maybe early on next year. Sony is always a step back when it comes to processors usually. When phones were coming out with the S4 chip, Sony released their flagship with the S3 chip. So it's only expected that when now the S4 Pro and quad S4 are coming out in phones, Sony is putting a regular S4 in their flagship.
I don't know much about LG's cameras, but their displays are pretty amazing. 13 MP should be fine resolution wise, but as far as lens and software go, I have no clue.
Battery should be identical to the GS3, maybe a bit worse because of quad core, unless there is some method to save battery life that Qualcomm came up with and I don't know about.
You should definitely take this phone into consideration. Looks like LG is trying to put all past reputation behind them. No more plastic (this uses a special polarized glass, no telling on durability though), they fixed their custom UI quite a bit, and it seems as though they are being more cautious when it comes to software optimizations to lower the chance of bugs and slow down.
If you're going to get this when it comes to a carrier, check to see if they can give you a grace period. It's about 2 weeks you can have the phone to see if you like it, and you can trade it in for something else within those 2 weeks of you purchasing it. You can test the camera and see what how the battery life is based on your usage.

Thanks for the advice!
But I heard that the more cores the phone has the less the battery drains?
110. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4154; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
Yeah, sorry, I typed that out in the morning when I was a bit groggy lol. With quad cores most of the cores are kind of in a sleep mode, and only turn on when needed, and that saves battery life. Or at least that's how it is with the Tegra 3, with its 5th core.
112. remixfa (Posts: 14252; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
yes, the more cores that are there, the more potential for battery savings if all other things being equal between a dual and quad core set up. More cores mean the work can be spread around. 4 cores running at 50% power use less juice than 2 cores running at 100% power. power use goes up exponentially with core load, not equally.
The T3 uses a 4+1 set up because the 4 cores always stay at relatively equal usage to spread the work. the 5th core is your "idle" core more or less for when your not using the phone.
More advanced chipsets like the Krait, exynos, ect dont need the 5th small core because the 4 regular cores can individually adjust up and down as needed which gives them a potentially greater power savings over the 4+1 set up. Add in the fact that the krait and exynos are much smaller chip size (and in Exyno's case more advanced manufacturing) than the T3 and its even better power savings.
Long story short, yea the Quad Krait should be pretty decent on battery unless your doing heavy load things like advanced 3D gaming.

Hmm...interesting. Well considering all that, this phone looks like it's the winner. I'll see what else comes out by the end of the year to make a decision, thanks for the info, now I know more technicalities to make a better decision.

WOW! This is going to totally blow the Samsung Galaxy S 3, HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 out of the water!! LOL

Tomorrow this phone will be outdated...waiting for HTC One X5!
117. li0nh3art (Posts: 28; Member since: 05 Aug 2012)
The only problem with LG is they don't give updates to their phones! :/ I think the same story will be repeated as they did with 2X, 4X..!
119. Ragnarockd (Posts: 47; Member since: 27 Aug 2012)
Wow LG just did a samsung....whats with the emotional ui.
121. redmd (Posts: 981; Member since: 26 Oct 2011)
They should fit this with their 5 inch 1080p display and I'll be happy.
122. Shino (banned) (Posts: 196; Member since: 23 Jul 2012)
The camera module seems awseome on paper. But these three: LG, Android and the stupendously large display, make me say "no thanks". :)
124. hameed1989 (Posts: 47; Member since: 29 Aug 2012)
This looks good. I hope they keep its price down or else it will be another LG phone ‘that could have been’
13 MP camera is mouth watering

I have a LG Optimus 3D and the only thing I can say about LG is:
LG Support sucks.
LG knows about the ghost call issue in the LG Optimus 3D since long ago, but they've never released and update or a fix at least!
I'll never buy another LG device. NEVER.
