Despite Windows RT woes, NVIDIA pledges support

0. phoneArena 18 Jul 2013, 18:42 posted on

The last week or two have not been all that great for Microsoft's Surface RT, and really Windows RT tablets in general, but NVIDIA is sticking with the platform, despite manufacturers and users not really being too interested. We've already seen Microsoft drop the price on Surface RT tablets, and Microsoft's quarterly earnings showed that the Surface RT lost $900 million. But, NVIDIA has pledged to continue with support...

RT seriously needs to be tailored for budget gaming on the go, and Microsoft needs strict spec requirements for this tailored gaming. If Microsoft can manage to do this on top of the features it already has, I believe it will sell. Awe hell, who am I kidding. I just want a portable Xbox...LMAO

Everyone knows the only reason nVidia is ok with taking a beating is because they need to put their Tegra wherever they can... for now.

Legacy support and inherent weaker power limits RT to v.8 Windows. With the ARM app ecosystem growing at an amazing rate, non hard-core gamers (read: a LOT) will start caring less about legacy support as more apps move to ARM.

Power on the other hand -- it's not high enough for the average consumer just yet I think. And ARM still has a ways to go with that. Once an ARM chip can truly compare to laptop chips in performance, people will be a lot more willing to embrace RT.

Microsoft needs to merge Windows RT with Windows Phone 8. Seriously, why have two different ARM based platforms? Wouldn't it be easier to maintain one?

My thoughts exactly... beat me to it though.

They probably would have been better off with even just a WP8 tablet, and some apps to fill out the RT functionality.

+1 on unified platform for ARM, if a 3GF enabled 8" RT/WIN PRO tablet could make a call like my NOTE 8 can do right now - and i can use same apps for android tablet and android phone...

Hopefully they watch this and will merge these two "kids" into one - probably GDR3 update will do this?

Windows RT runs on ARM. Windows 8 doesn't run on ARM. So MS needs windows RT if it needs a representative OS in ARM devices. But recently intels bay trail atom processor has shown better performance than ARM architecture chipsets. And full windows 8 can run on it..
so.. If MS wants to kick androids arse in ARM based tablets with RT it needs to make it free for OEM's and people.. All current android OEM's will be interested.. All current android tablet users will have the option of booting into RT. And then MS can use it to unfairly force users to use bing and other MS products.. now that google is clear of such charges.

it is interesting to understand that the Windows RT tablets do exactly the same things the Apple Ipads and the Android Tablets DO = they run only Apps designed for touch screen tablets nothing else. the General Public however seems to only be interested In buying Window 8 tablets. Windows 8 Tablets folks are PC's that are shaped like a tablet and Folks you had BETTER UNDERSTAND to have a good one that will run WIndows 7, Vista and Windows XP desktop programs well your Windows 8 Tablet Needs powerful Intel i5 or i7 CPU's. The retail cost of just these CPU's alone is over a hundred dollars so forget about getting a Windows 8 tablet computer that has top quality to it for less than 400 dollars because Windows 8 tablets are PC's shaped like a tablet folks and anyone with half a brain knows that a top quality PC or Note book computer cost at least 650 to 1200 dollars. so if you folks want a really good windows 8 tablet PC don't think cheap! a cheap windows 8 tablet wont get you where you want to go1
