Ever since the launch of the iPhone 4, the tech world started talking about pixel density as an important factor in a phone's display...

I've been pretty much looking for high resolution touchscreens since the days of the lg arena in early 2009. The 800x480 resolution on a 3 inch screen was really impressive at the time when 320x240 or 400x240 was the norm, the arena was great for videos!! Its probably not long before 1080p starts getting introduced on larger android handsets from 4.5 inch upwards.

I remember a lot of Sammy-fanboys bashed the iPad 3 because they said a Galaxy Tab with a 2560×1600 screen would come soon. And now you're starting again --'

At least they weren't lying about it based on the court document confirmed during the trial. I guess they're waiting for Exynos5 which is the right thing to do

As a professional designer, I was craving for high-density screens for almost a decade in desktop computing. That would be really useful, but nooo... they still sucks, and everyone started to talk about it when iPhone 4 with Retina was released. It only proves how much Apple is treated as someone who leads the industry. Because no one else wants to be the leader, just waits until Apple states what would be the next trend.

That would be only newest MacBook Pro with Retina screen.
I'm a heavy desktop user. I'll rather wait for display manufacturers to catch up now that they have been approved by the Leader.

Is display ppi your only criteria for buying a desktop?

No. But it's very important. It's more like something that should have been available to professionals for over a decade (true DTP/photography, WYSIWYG typography, no antialising in 3D etc.), but it wasn't.

@ AppleConspiracy I agree 100%.

Super high resolution panels have been available for a long time but they're usually with larger screen (27"+) monitors since Windows has poor DPI font scaling. For photography, the rMBP doesn't have a great panel due to its low color spectrum. If you have the money or are using it for business, check out Eizo. For color sensitive applications, nothing beats the ColorEdge line. I use the RadiForce line for work (medical).

Eizo is great, but also expensive. Dream Color HP works just as well for much less. Anyway, it's not about resolution, but pixel densities.
If I'm working on DTP, it would be great if monitors were produced with 300ppi density, and that OS-es are capable of adequate resizing - for instance, by using DIP (display independent pixel) like in Android. I don't know what solution is used rMBP.
Moreover, IMO displays like those could be smaller size and be used closer to our eyes - I'm thinking here about Wacom Cintiq style. Screen real estate doesn't depend so much on diagonal but on resolution, so therefore smaller diagonals should be enough.
Of course, I think that graphic cards are perfectly capable of handling those resolutions, however all Industry has been pulled back for years because of gaming Industry demands.

No no! Then get a SONY Zseries, Like no others, and totally unique and rare, and for high flyers, celebs, entrapners....!
i wish i could afford one!

I am using high-end graphic card, Quadro FX5600. It's old (and therefore cheaper) but it gives you stuff that couldn't be achieved by contemporary gaming cards, not to mention anything that goes in those pathetic Macs...

There's limit to necessary resolution, the future of phone is wearable devices and voice control.
