Delta Airlines places a large order for 11,000 Microsoft Surface 2 tablets

Delta Air Lines stepped up to the plate and pre-ordered 11,000 Microsoft Surface 2 tablets; the airline intends to use the slates to replace the large bags carried by airline pilots that typically contain paper maps, briefing documents and other important in-flight paperwork required by pilots. Those bags each weigh 38 pounds, so replacing them with a lightweight tablet can actually save fuel in the long run...

That's a good choice, they will use the surface for real work not for temple run or another kid games

surface two doesn't have any x86 apps, save for office.
It will be used for temple run.

Good for them! The Surface 2 seems to have cleared a few quirks that the first installment had. I'm rooting for them though i would never choose the tablet as my personal slate. Just think where we would be if Microsoft, Samsung, and Apple all had EQUAL market share in tablet sales. I'll tell you one thing...it would make these forums a lot more interesting!

Hopefully they give up on RT and focus on x86 low end tablets. They are better than the RT in almost every ascept.

True. Since there are really cheap win8(non RT) tablets out there I dont see a reason of RT when full windows will always be better. With haswell cpu's giving as much as 70% extra battery life RT should slowly die.

Exactly, there really wasn't reason for RT to exist, especially compared to Surface Pro and now MS will be focusing a lot of attention on Surface 2.

It's like your saying give up iOS on iPad and install Mountain Lion or something full fledge Mac OS. RT gives you the offering of an iPad but powerfull.

But there are already options like that but better (iOS and Android). There aren't any full OS options but Win8. And there are reasonable priced Win8 tablets coming out, making RT really unneeded.

People always get on MS for being slow. But I guess an old saying is true. "Slow and steady wins the race"

not from my experience, not all people in the real world are as stupid as the rabbit in that story

Tablets are slowly replacing laptops... and i think we really need to cope with that...

This is just the beginning . By 2014 when Intel really catches up with arm in the low power consumption. I see every company moving with the surface pro as their main tablets. This is the future, we just don't know it yet. Android and ios tablets to me a simple a stupid investment. Buy a note 3 and a surface pro 2 and you are complete.

a person made an earlier comment that cheaper Android tablets would have been better for Delta to buy.The Surface 2 has a more powerful OS than Android tablets have and it is preloaded with the drivers capability to be connected to thousands printers. scanners, external hard drives and other computer peripherals that Android and Apple ipad tablets cannot be connected to. This is probably the main reason they choose the Microsoft Surface 2 over the other tablets. check out the web there are Video's of people hooking up MS Surface RT's to a lot of equipment and using.them. The Surface 2 is a whole different animal than the Original surface RT. It has a faster CPU, More RAM, A full High definition 1080 screen and is slimmer and lighter. it makes the Surface Rt look primative. People have to get over this Ida that Microsoft should only make a Windows 8 or 8.1 tablet. the Surface 2 will do 90 percent of the things people do with their tablet computers plus more. Tt just does not run Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 desktop programs. Surface 2 uses what are known as ARMS CPU's just like the Android tablets and Apple ipad tablets also use. over 90 percent of Windows desktop programs will not run on an ARMS CPU's. Nobody is putting down Android or Apple ipads because they do not run windows desktop programs. like wise people should not put down The Surface 2 because it does not run Windows desktop programs.

Do they have to turn it off on takeoff and landding?
