I agree, but most people just can't live with their phones switched off… as soon as the plane touches down, they start texting, they must have something really important to say… people can't turn the phone off even while they're watching a movie or a show in a theatre, look at the people around you next time… chances are that many of them will follow their facebook feed more than the movie. It has become a sort of obsessive-compulsive disorder for many...they just feel bad if they can't use the phone, just as a smoker needs to smoke a cigarette!

"CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW??!!" back in the days of GTE. Verizon absorbed GTE, it's from this situation that Verizon probably came up with that popular phrase!

lol if phone calls are allowed people will be pissed a lot, but it do not matter to me, I can sleep in places with loud noises, as long as someone not touching me, bring on the noise

"Imagine that one-sided conversation phone call in the seat next to you, “WHAT??!! SAY THAT AGAIN! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW??!! OF COURSE I DO!! CAN YOU PICK ME UP??!! WHAT??!! SAY THAT AGAIN! HUH??!! LET ME CALL YOU RIGHT BACK TO GET A BETTER CONNECTION!!” Ugh. That is what it sounded like back in the days of GTE Airfone. Technical issues aside, loud conversations, whether on a cell phone or not is simply annoying." That alone is reason enough to NOT allow calls during flights. I mean its bad enough that you're stuck with a stranger with really nowhere to go for what feels like an eternity!

A loud phone call is still better than a fattie plastered up against your side, or a screaming kid.

The advantage of allowing in-flight calls is not calling your ex-wife from 30,000ft, but calling your brother from 10,000ft when the airplane is circling around a congested airport. This an outdated rule that has to go, even if the FCC is merely catching up half a decade past due with European, Middle-Eastern and Far-Eastern countries.

Screaming kicking your chair while being stuck between two sweaty fatties is the worst

....
I know that the idea of phone calls is so new on the airplanes, considering sinde the early 1990s airfone was installed on many airplanes that allowed phone coversations. If you ever recall seeing those phones in the back of the seats in front of you with a credit card reader attached that you could use if you really wanted to pay the high fees associated with it. People didn't have loud annoying conversations then, and they won't now.

The definition of "hell" to a flier currently is: fat passenger seated on a tight 4-5-4 economy class plane, on a red eye flight of 8 hours+ to the United States (after the budget cuts, the path from passport control to connection flight became a huge pain).

Now if you add this to: annoying people that can't stop talking and they talk loud because they're seated closer to the wings, and the engines' noise and they couldn't care less it's f-ing 3 AM and this is universally "too late to call someone living where the sun haven't risen yet".

Just leave internet access and text messages (the old SMS, not advanced stuff like whatsapp) and ban facebook and other pointless viral sites, like 9gag. It would be VERY annoying to hear people laughing like crazy and getting all "Look at this pic my buddy shared! ROFL ZOMG this is so hilarious (and laughter goes for 30 minutes, it's 3 AM and you want to try to sleep)" - My 2 cents on the subject
