Damian Dinning tweets his response to criticism of 8MP PureView camera on Nokia Lumia 920

Nokia's camera expert sent out a number of carefully worded tweets in response to the leak that the PureView camera on the rumored Nokia Lumia 920 cant be worthy of the PureView name at 8MP; the rumored Nokia Lumia 920 will still be considered a PureView model by Nokia...

So is this a sort of confirmation of the 8 MP pureview?

As far as I know, PureView is a technology to crunch big images into smaller ones.
With only 8MP do we need any special technology?
And without hi res camera how can we take picture of far objects, a favorite feature of PureView?

he just said is not about the amount of pixels but how the phone utilises it

Bollocks. Pureview is all about capturing images with large pixel count and downscaling them to lower photo's. From 38Mpixel sensor to 5Mpixels photo.
Also the first paragraph "But the way this rumor got started wasn't based on any particularly outstanding leak"
The "rumor" started because Windows Phone is technically restricted to 20Mpixel sensor max! Not some s**t about phi or 21-second teasers.
The thing is that the 920 WILL have a larger sensor but it will only use 1 (one) pureview mode. It´ll probably have a 16Mpixel sensor internally and downscales all images to 8Mpixels. This will have a significant effect on picture quality though the 808 PV will still be better. Also his faiytale about that LED is bollocks. Xenon is STILL superior.
This phone sucks! It only uses Pureview as a marketing trick. It's just as iProduct all bling and no substance (and lots of marketing shoved behind it).
I don't believe in it anymore!
I don't believe Nokia anymore!
I don't trust Microsoft anymore!

Nokia reps told us before that the because of the years of development of the 808 pure view in the time of symbian the technology is generally only compatible with symbian software and any version of it in the future brought to windows would have to be a very scaled back modified version. Its most likely a wp pureview would be 5-8 mp at most and would only have small benefits over regular 8 mp cameras

true. 12MP shutter is not too big compared to 8MP. It's slightly bigger but not in a big factor. Use the 12MP used in n8 and utilize some mind boggling DSP.

if its 8mp camera....nokia you are dead....

didnt u read his tweets nutcase. its not about the pixels.
40. ScottSchneider (Posts: 330; Member since: 06 Dec 2011)
Yes IT is not about the Pixels. But If the Lumia 920 comes out with the 21er or even say the 41er, Nokia will have a winner in their hands.. n they would sell 920 like hot cakes... There aren't a lot of customers who will go buy products thinking it is not the MP that counts... They buy it for the Tech specs... It is most of the time the Technical Specs the phone has... Every one buy Quad-Core... Probably a year from now, Quad-Core could be gone and the next gen Processors will take over... IF they arent giving the same to the customers who are waiting for the 21er 920, then what is the difference between the Ativ S and the 920...

Oh yeah your right. 808 is a mammoth upgrade :p
6. Roomaku (Posts: 278; Member since: 06 Feb 2012)
Probably an 8 mp so they can keep the form factor down. It'll still be tight, but the majority of people are going to not even notice Nokia when the the new iPhone comes out... unfortunately :(

Well...a real Pure view 41mp would've saved nokia from further drowning...not sure about 8mp...and any logic/justification Damian use to defend 8mp shooter is waste!!!
9. ogy_dogy (Posts: 453; Member since: 29 Jun 2012)
Nokia needs to realise that people are stupid, and would rather have a 41 mp shooter that makes lousy photos (not that it does, this is just an example) and say they got 41mp than to have a 8mp shooter which makes awesome pics.... tis sad but true...
30. weinerslav (Posts: 126; Member since: 31 Jul 2012)
Sad but true, you just need to check some comments here (ok, some are already gone) to see how people defend the megapixel count over quality... And this is between people that apparently understand something about technology!!! Doesn't matter how good you are, it only matters that you manage to sell it (and fool a few)

So, he actually said: "It's impossible to put PureView camera in a smartphone and in the same time to keep thin profile and good looking design. So we chose to put 8mp regular shooter, and we will try to fool you that it's PureView."
23. CX3NT3_713 (Posts: 2149; Member since: 18 Apr 2011)
Hey people are easily fooled... into thinking things ..*coughs*@pple*..

29. brucewayne (Posts: 29; Member since: 30 Aug 2012)
if its not megapixels that count, then why did they opt for 41 mp in the 808 ?
would have rather gone with 12mp..y get r hopes so high by sayin that PV will b available in wp8..

I have never been a smart phone Camera freak I like to take pictures with a for real cameras like Nikon SLR's I use not add on cameras. do not put this smart phones camera down until the Pro's review it. PureView is about image processing if Nokia's People have got it right then 8 megapixels will be all you need for a great snapshot

Damian if people considered this Apple would have never sold Iphones in Millions... Ppl love bling with functionality :) period

I was an early adopter of the Lumia 800 and suffered 8 months of grief, as it took a series of software updates before the phone finally achieved decent battery life, included the marquee Nokia software and could do wifi tethering. At the end of all that, it was finally a pretty decent phone and then I lost the damn thing. All the talk about Pureview got me thinking that I would buy another Lumia despite my lousy experience.... but if it turns out to be an 8MP camera then forget about it. With Nokia and WP8, you're getting a slick OS and pretty nice hardware but also sacrificing a lot in terms of apps to choose from. To compensate, there needs to be a proposition like low price or awesome camera spec. 8MP just doesn't cut it, no matter how great the tweaks and algorithms.

When you say "people" I assume you are talking about the people who read and comment on blogs like this, you do realize the those people are an incredibly small fraction of all the people who actually buy a smartphone or will buy one. I have found that a good portion of the people that actually own a smartphone do not even know what a megapixel is let alone how many there particular phone has.

I'm disappointed about the pureless view 8MP, but I'll probably get the new Lumia as I'm a complete sucker for the pretty colors...: )

now this guy again trying to calm us down like he did when nokia released all the S^3 phones without AUTOFOCUS except for the N8, trying to explain that "we dont need" that feature, f**k you, we(the consumer) are the people who decides what we want to pay for, not you nor even nokia, nokia should know WE want a ridiculous large camera with pureview, and dont say "hey but the phone would be bulky/fat" liar there are 16mp phones (like the titan 2) with nearly the same thickness of the lumia 900, how much can add a 21mp sensor?
nokia this is your last chance, you CANNOT disappoint us
38. Loubielou (Posts: 483; Member since: 11 Jul 2012)
Some might be interested in the Camera on Windows 8,but its the Functions that need to Improved to make consumers invest into buying them, like Bluetooth Sending an Recieving an the use of micro sd cards on Windows 8,as its got no chance competiting with the Samsung Galaxy S3 or iPhone 5,if these are not made available
39. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
i just wish that it will be 21MP... nokia is being blind again... yes to us it doesnt need so much pixels but to the consumers eyes, pixels matters... thats why they bought DigiCam and DSLR that has millions of pixels on it!!!
but if it wont be par to 808 pureview's camera that is really groundbreaking, then consumers might think that nokia isnt serious about the game.. they need to bring the pureview tech to lumia in order to survive and they need to make it par and matches the camera lens of 808 pureview...
