Taking up the top honors in their most recent tablet rankings, Consumer Reports placed the venerable Apple iPad 2 with Wi-Fi & 3G on the top of its ratings. Of course, there are no reports of any antenna issues with...

The iPad is a great multi-media device that does exactly what it's supposed to do in the most fluid way possible. And honestly, all these tablets are going to take business away from stand-alone eReaders and netbooks. But my problem is still the cost. Apple, I expect to be expensive even though I still think the price is ridiculous. But for Samsung and Motorola to actually be more expensive than Apple...I feel like the entire tablet market is overpriced for what they actually do. Problem is, people will buy them so unless a company wants to take a lower profit, we're stuck.

Once the market starts getting flooded with tablets, the prices will start coming down to more appropriate levels, for WiFi models at least.

I think its a safe bet to say the market is already flooded with tablets, But every company thinks they have the next igaget killer so they out price themselves and ironically think that consumers was beefier hardware specs (XOOM).

The truth is that the average consumer doesnt care about a slightly better hardware spec. Currently most of the competing tablets are very close is specs. Its all about functionlity, accessibility, popularity, and inovation.

This is why Apple is the leader with their ipads. They have alread build a positive consumer base and, for there product, very well priced and marketed.

Exactly dude! I say this all the time...folks barely know how to set up their email, let alone know what a dual core processor or HDMI cable is. Apple shows people what they can do with their iProduct without getting technical.

I just don't get why the XOOM doesn't start at $300 or $400. Undercut Apple because that's the only way you can succeed at this. And hell, maybe it will make Apple lower their price. They took down the price of the MacBook Air because those Netbooks had more functions for a much lower price. I'm pretty sure that's the same for the iPhone 3G to the 3GS. Other smartphones were priced a bit lower so Apple lowered the price to $199 and $299 (correct me if I'm wrong).

Indeed I think they should focus on features and showing off features on commercials, and leave the hardware specks commercials for us geeks, I loved the first line up of commercials for the Droid where it asked people what their smartphones could do and came with the popular 'Droid Does' and asked people what their pones could do, many got Google sky map just because it was featured on commercials... I believe apple's true rival might end up being SE... the way the offer commercials and features instead of specks its somewhat interesting, also they seem to wait for the best time to offer a promotion or even a feature.

actually the price of the Iphone has been pretty consistent (as far as no contract price). Its just that when Iphone first came out, they only offered device at no contract pricing, no subsidizing, thus why it seemed like the price dropped dramatically when in fact Apple still gets paid about the same amount either way.

The Ipad seems reasonable enough as far as price, about the same price as a lower end laptop. And the Ipod Touch is a good deal too for what it is.

The iPad/iPad2 are the first Apple products in recent memory that are priced somewhat appropriately (I don't count iPhones due to the heavy subsidization)

Though, I have to admit, I don't understand the whole tablet craze myself - for $500 I can get a laptop that has a ton more functionality than any tablet on the market, and not give up all that much portability. But, I live in a world where someone can make a fortune selling pet rocks, so I guess nothing should surprise me.

I beg to differ.... tablets have certain features the laptop does not have, and are build to compete with netbooks (thats my opinion) they offer many more easy assess like for example a built in market for applications plus a PC version of an app gets a tablet contender with a cheaper price. for example office for windows comes at a price of 114.99 for the most basic

while the android and iPad version of quick office cost 24.99 (sometimes is on sale, go mine for 9.99)

now if as an student I want to make text documents with my homework research? I can do that in both yet I'm already saving on my pad when the office app cost less, and its not office many apps and games that get a version for tabs and phones cost less that their PC counterpart plus they might be easy to find and install... so the extra you spend on a tab might become savings on the latter run

tablets can do about 90% of what a notebook can do. Most people use them for email, web surfing, light gaming, facebook, and quick flash based gaming like farmville (ooh.. sorry ipad owners about not having flash. :) )

they are obviously behind in some areas, but they are also way ahead in others. Battery life, weight, portability, and app markets quickly come to mind. Also, i think the mobile version of googlemaps for android is leagues ahead of the computer (And obviously apples) variant of google maps.

The market is nowhere near flooded with tablets. It is a new market segment that has barely gotten its feet of the ground. We geeks might think its big stuff but less than 2% of the world owns any tablets. There is tons of room to grow, and until there are probably 30 more choices out there and the market is a little more saturated, the prices will stay on the high end. By 2015 we will probably see the devices drop in price quite substantially compared to where they are now unless they are filled with some super magical crap that keeps the price high.. but really, what else could they stuff in them??
Were quickly getting to a feature saturation point which at that point will make it less of a "spec war" and more of a price war.

agreed. You know a product is overpriced when the competitors are selling for the same price or a higher price than Apple is. Talking about entry level models of course, since the 64GB 3G enabled Ipad is still on the high end of the tablet market.

Wow, Jeffdabeat and I agree on something; Tablets are waaaay overpriced; laptops/notebooks I can understand being $600, especially if it were a convertible tablet computer. Price-wise, they should be in the $200-300 area, since they're less capable than a laptop/computer and use mobile-phone based OSes: the Nook and Archos (and similarly-priced) tablets are great examples of reasonable pricing for what they offer, especially if you root the Nook. The Samsung Tab 10.1, Xoom, and ipad2 could place themselves at the higher end of the tab market at around $300-400, and it'd make more sense from a market standpoint. That allows netbooks to be competetive with a tab, since you get a physical keyboard and a computer-based OS, and then if you want something bigger or more capable, notebooks/laptops are a few hundred dollars more, with top-tier versions, i.e. Sony, Alienware, etc, commanding prices over $1000. Notice I didn't say the macintosh devices, since their computers tend to be $500-1000 overpriced, based strictly on components & capability: any comparable laptop still offering a Core2Duo is around $400, but the macbooks are still being sold with those at $1100-1500, though I think the new macbook pros finally have an Intel i-series chip

CR has become a joke. They've been anti Apple for a while now. But since Apple products still sells and actually works quite well with consumers despite their anti Apple propaganda, they now have a change of heart, to make it seem like consumers actually listen to them. Do you EVER have anything positive to say about anything? No matter whlch way the article slants, it seems you always attack anything that isn't 100% complementary to Apple and their products at all times. Of all the many positive reviews CR has given to Apple products, you're still all heartbroken about the iP4 not being recommended? Im pretty sure Apple will post this very well deserved achievement on the website, proving CR is no joke at all.

Just stating facts here. CR did not recommend the ip4, but the ip4 still sold successfully. Not just that. The ip4 was awarded with the highest user satisfaction according to JD Powers' survey. What does that tell you? And how does that reflect on CR's take on NOT recommending the ip4? The consumers obviously proved CR wrong. How can CR not recommend a device that turned out to have the highest customer satisfaction? So yes, CR is a big joke. And now they recommend the ipad 2 after the fact that it already is selling out everywhere? Kinda late now for them don't you think? Users obviously don't listen to what CR has to say anymore.

CR did not recommend the iPhone4 because it had a glaring manufacturing defect, and Apple refused to admit it. The fact that they recommended the iPad2 shows you are wrong about their motives, and makes your iMotives all the more clear.

CR didn't have a "change of heart." They rated each product individually based on it's merits. Sales mean nothing as far as quality, unless you're stating that Windows is orders of magnitude better than OSx.

The thing is, they still ranked the iP4 very well, they just didn't give them that special stamp of approval that says "We recommend you go out and get this phone". They made the right call and you have every right to disagree with it, but why gripe about that old business when they are on a whole new product. And believe it or not, there are still a few people who wait for the reviews to come in before the cough up 500-800 bucks for a gadget that they aren't sure is worth it.

The iPad is good and so is the XOOM. I just think Honeycomb lags a bit. I myself was surprised that the price for the iPad 2 was soooooo cheap!! I felt jealous of the price because it is cheaper than the first iPad!

Lower pricing does guarantee more sales..

why am I a dick? Steve Jobs is dying from Cancer Im only stating two facts 1. Steve is an asshole who has brain washed his loyal customers into believing whats best for them and 2. WOW! ppl these days with buy anything apple produce! There is not even flash on it! Apple put the apple logo on some stupid water bottle creating iwater, ppl will buy that crap knowin there is nothing special about it! Apple ty to trick their consumers that their product is wat god created but it sucks! I still dnt find the reason 2 buy a tablet............(ok i get it bigger screen.....) only geeks buy a tablet, to put in their man purse!
