Compare the Galaxy S5's photos to those of the iPhone 5s, Xperia Z1 and other rivals

0. phoneArena 25 Feb 2014, 14:04 posted on

The Samsung Galaxy S5 definitely has a lot going for it, and one of its major new features is the new 16-megapixel camera with a nice range of handy features, such as real-time HDR, selective focus and, of course, 4K video recording. Still, with the Galaxy S5 release date being scheduled for April 11, there's still some painful waiting time for us to go through until we can take that fancy camera for a spin, right...

Some of the shots needed to be refocused (4 and 7) but nonetheless it looks promising. Can't wait for the final software shots.

Here are certain things people are forgetting so quickly about GS5.

1. Increased sensor size compared to any other Galaxy devices (1/2.6-inch)
2. 1st time use of ISOCELL which they claim to be better than BSI sensors. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt2u8RH47lk)
3. Phase Detection AF (way better than contrast detection).
4. Live HDR mode.

Okay guys, so a few thoughts after looking up some other S5 shots. White balance, color gamut and dynamic range look pretty freaking good, good light or limited, I see proper results:

http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/2014022505032572573b.jpg
http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/2014022505062588561b.jpg
http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/201402250529253785b.jpg

HDR is VERY impressive on these shots, considering the camera is facing the sun, the results are pretty dynamic:

http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/201402250911254434b.jpg
http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/2014022509112583436b.jpg
http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/2014022509112555484b.jpg
http://cf-attach.i-sogi.com/tw/article/img/201402/201402250911250383b.jpg

Now with all that said, it appears there's quite a heavy processing going on, lot of noise to deal with resulting in heavier-than-ideal softness of the image. Mind you at 16MPs it still means boatloads of detail, but per pixel sharpness, Lumias and the Exmor RS are ahead. Dynamic range and color reproduction however is where Sammy gets serious with ISOCELL, speed should be good too.

Now here's where it gets interesting: the Sammy presentation showed a 4:3 sensor with some 16:9 filter layered over it. These photos are 5312x2988 pixels, which is 16:9, so it's possible that the sensor has 20 megapixels overall! (4 unused).

As far as jpeg compression goes, the 16MP images weigh in around 4MBs each, we could live with less processing, but it's not a final software.

Those photos look amazing! Samsung does the best when it comes to camera software, so I have no doubt they'll manage to make this a competitive camera.

I'm not sure, but for me the GS5 looks the best. After that Z1+5S, then GS4, the HTC One

Wow, the media was right, that GS5 color really do look like a band-aid... I like the other colors though... Can't wait to see what the Note 4 will look like, with it's curved display. :) Camera software is not finalized so no comment there.

The GS5 shots seem the worst to me, all of them are really dark. It is between the 5S and Z1 for me.

Situation 1 ("Galaxy S5" vertical sign): white balance is best on S5, per pixel sharpness and exposition on 5S

Situation 2 (room with bald fella): all except S4 are spot on with white balance, close in overall detail. Z1 is better than I expected, too close to call a winner

IMO, from best to worse: GS5, IP5S, Z1, and HTC One. Thanks for the early comparison photos Ray!

Situation 3 (face on poster with strong light on it): S5 seem most naturally toned, but underexposed, 5S on par with level of detail, bit overexposed, rest is a mix, though Z1 is very well balanced

Situation 4 (black phone, white backgroud): S5 overexposed pretty badly, 5S looks the best, nice job by HTC One

Overall I guess the S5 needs some exposure tweaks, but white balance, level of details and focus seems to be pretty darn good. Is this 100% the ISOCELL sensor BTW?

P.S. Notice that Samsung's sensor is 16MP at a 16:9 aspect ratio, most interesting!

Only three things that makes GS5 a no go for me:
The design (Ok but....naaa)
No OIS (Would make the camera A LOT BETTER FOR LOW LIGHT PHOTOS)
And only 8gb available from the 16gb (Yes I know Micro-SD but me and M-SDs are not good friends)
Other wise This phone rocks.
Besides I'm also waiting for Nokias L1820 :D
Sorry for my english :)

The camera is pretty fast, OIS isn't needed as much because of that.
They sell too many phone for the OIS.
The image that showed 7.86GB also listed more than 2GB of miscellanous files.

I agree on the 16 gb. Hopefully the 32 gb is available with ATT. I would consider the blue color w/32 gb.

What a horrible format to try and compare photos. You guys had to use a slideshow? Why could't you have cropped them and put them side-by-side?

because those cameras doesn't offer realistic environment colors and they're more often photo-illuminated while the galaxy S5 seems dark but it gives more realistic colored environment as you see in the first picture

Odd, I don't see it, to me the s5 did great only in the projector shot, the other shots imo look much better. Heck I even digged the 5s over it which is horrible. I need my eyes checked. Where is my Samsung glasses at...seriously though I don't find the shots to be 'zomg'.
