i already predicted this... since its china the world most populous country...
these smartphone manufacturers (apple, samsung, nokia,BlackBerry, etc) should start making sub $200 smartphones coz if they dont want to be outnumbered buy china phones(huawei...ZTE and china cheaps) they should start making big step to china..

I think it would make more sense for this kind of statistic if they were to give the volume of shipments AND the average price of the devices per market. Then you can calculate the "real value" each one of the markets holds, as the OEMs have better margis in the high end devices than in the low ends.
Just my two cents.

This is all I must say, is this seriously some sort of surprise? There are over a billion people in the country with more people becoming what is considered middle class every day. This is not a shocker it should be expected. But one must remember that by that time we may have already moved on to something more powerful than smartphones just with a different name.

+1 for you my friend, just common sense. India shouldn't be too far behind.

In India Samsung rules smartphone market holding 40%+ market share with Nokia and RIM being 2nd and 3rd. Three together hold about 80% of market. Rest is HTC/Sony/Micromax/Lava/Karbon/Apple. I must say that by and large Android based phones let buyers be very "wise" with their money :)
Apple can never take off in Indian market (despite all sponsored media hype) only because of not being able to compete against Android phones. In corporate sector WIN8 will definitely be preferred over iPhone.

well because iPhone was never meant to be sold on cheap market... even the OS is redundant, but its build quality is top build...
sorry to offend you but indian market is ruled by samsung, but what particular samsung device? the s3 or just low end or mid range device..
i agree with that android is really big in your market..but remember, there are manufacturers who make cheap android and people still buy it...

It isn't cheap market in smartphone segment however if "Cheap" is defined absed on what iPhone4S costs then yes it is cheap market. Those who buy S3 instead of iPhone are wise with their money in my opinion. Sorry i don't have per device market share. In the "cheap" entry level and feature phone segment Nokia rules and Samsung is second.
Buyers have the option of getting an iPhone where cost is 100% subsidised under 2 year contract but not many opt for it. Reasons are pretty simple ... the very idea of being tied down isn't accepted happily here and iPhone doesn't offer anything additional wrt feature as compared to a S3 or S2. The young generation here doesn't want to be told how to hold a phone :)
Wouldn't like to comment on OS Build quality but if it's lifted from *NIX it got to be stable :)

who kars. so what if china has more shipments than US. people here are richer, and our phones are higher quality(I know . even the iphone is better than some Huawei low-end krap)

and guess what. china has 4-5 times the number of people in the US. that should happen
