Really like the idea but this really only caters to those with modernized homes.

Technically, that is what SmartThings and WeMo do. They are add-on components which can modernize utility use, etc. Those products are designed to provide automation in homes where it is not built in (which is most homes). It will be interesting to see if this makes it to market, and it eventually interacts with automated appliances, then the refridgerator can tell it to add "buy milk" to the list of things to do.
