Canada's TELUS joins with CIBC to offer mobile payment services to certain Android models
Canadian carrier TELUS has joined with banking institution CIBC to provide a mobile payment service to those sporting certain Android models that are hooked up to the TELUS network. CIBC's mobile app is powering the service, which allows for payments of $50 or less to be made using the app. The Android models that support the service all offer NFC and include the Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung GALAXY Note II and the HTC One.
Besides owning one of the above mentioned phones, those wanting to take part in using their handset for mobile payments must have a CIBC branded credit card in addition to the updated CIBC mobile app, which can be found later today at the Google Play Store. The option to pay by tapping your phone to the point of sale terminal is available at more than 250,000 locations in Canada with a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave POS system.
Later this month, three TELUS branded BlackBerry models will be allowed to download the CIBC mobile payment app including the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Q10 and the BlackBerry Bold 9900. And make no mistake about it, there is demand for this service in the country. Of the 68% of Canadians 18-44 who own a smartphone, 46% have an interest in making purchases using their phone.
Telus has plans to offer this service on other devices and with other banks. Some of the other financial institutions that could take part include TD and RBC.
