Can HTC's superphones worry Samsung? HTC President seems to think so
0. phoneArena posted on 28 Jan 2013, 09:25
HTC used to be a fearsome figure in the Android space. Having built both the very first and second Android phones, the manufacturer had accumulated significant experience with the OS by the time the other companies joined the party...

Yes, but they have to worry about the built quality of their devices.

Not really. Samsung can change their own build quality whenever they need to.

I would agree with you on the build quality of HTC phones being better than Samsung. HTC is going to need recognize that people want phones with no compromises such as an SD card slot and removeable battery. I myself don't mind a built in battery but it needs to be large enough to handle my day to day use.
HTC has no legitimate exscuse in regards to not putting in an SD slot and larger battery when Motorola was able to do so while making a thinner device.
76. HDShatter posted on 28 Jan 2013, 15:17 0 1
HTC didn't put them in it because they probably save a whole $2 not doing so.

I LOVE HTC, but if they don't have removable batteries or expandable memory in their phones when it is time for me to buy one, I will pick another manufacturer. I have to visit many different job sites, and there isn't always a place to charge my phone. I currently carry two spare batteries with me, and cannot imagine using a phone with non-replacable batteries until battery life starts lasting 24 hours. (Which will probably not happen any time soon)

Not mention, the reason's samsungs are so popular are because they open source the drivers(easier deving) and they make them easily hack-able. Neither of which Moto or HTC do. And guess what, both of those companies have, and continue to struggle. WAKE UP HTC AND MOTO, we don't want to buy sammys poorly built phones, we want YOUR devices, but you have to listen to us, THE CUSTOMER, not VZW etc.
63. Martine posted on 28 Jan 2013, 13:44 7 3
HTC has the worst quality control issues in the industry. This in my opinion is worse than your "build quality issues". If you don't know this, you need to ask your friends or any sales rep.
My Galaxy S2 will be 2 years in few months time without any build issues whatsoever. My Note 2 is doing great too.
No locked bootloader, No need to look for a way to s-off, removable battery and external SD support.
If these things are what you refer to as bad build quality, then I think I'm ready to trade any other phone for another Sammy's biggest thing.
81. TMach posted on 28 Jan 2013, 16:10 4 4
Build quality is about robustness of the hardware and a reasonable expectation that it will suffer a few bumps etc without risk of deterioration. That is NOT a quality associated with Samsung and is more one more likely to be attributed to HTC et al. I had a featured article in PA about a crack that inexplicably appeared in my S3 after very little use, close to the charger port! It is for this reason among others that I shall never touch a Samsung phone....ever! Octacore, wakes you up, makes coffee and butters your toast....No way no how! Xperia Z will be my next phone!
86. xoatomxo posted on 28 Jan 2013, 18:16 6 4
ok. you go buy a Sony. I am buying Galaxy S4 or Note 3
118. 14545 posted on 30 Jan 2013, 21:23 0 0
I disagree, I currently have a Sammy Nexus, but the build quality is crap. Much worse than my Rezzy, Tbolt, Bionic, or even old TP2. That being said, I will not buy another HTC/Moto device until they realize that we will not continue to support them if they make only carrier locked phones with no development help from them. (IE Drivers, and unlocked phones)

What "moves" are they supposed to do, anyway? Send korean soldiers to Taiwan?... The Galaxy SIV launch is planned for March and until then it makes no Sense (pun intended) to make a lot of noise, so that the current products line-up sells better.
39. emadshiny posted on 28 Jan 2013, 11:37 4 4
of course samsung is worry about Sony. they are progressing with a fast pace and they try to cover every levels as well. except from Z/Zl which are their high end devices, Sony is working on a mid range and a low end phone as well. so, get ready Sammy.

In Asia, I guess samsung is worried and closely watching what htc is upto. As a industry insider i was watching these to giants for a while now. when HTC started with Desire V which was a top Android Dual SIM phone, Samsung came up with Galaxy S Duos and Now, Desire SV= Galaxy Grand.
I think, Yes Samsung is worried about losing the market share they are having now
2. emadshiny posted on 28 Jan 2013, 09:30 17 5
to me their products look more elegant than Sammy's, so i prefer buying htc. Sammy is getting bigger via advertising.
25. umadd (banned) posted on 28 Jan 2013, 10:44 5 3
Right, because the advertising is the only factor in making sales.

I used GS3 and Note ll but now i have HTC DROID DNA so i prefer to buying htc in future bcz of these;
Best build quality
58. JWS65 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 13:21 7 1
I would give build and screen to DNA though Note 2 is not bad on those. But other than those, what does DNA offer better than Note 2?
60. androidsbiggestfan posted on 28 Jan 2013, 13:39 0 2
The Note 2 has literally about 66% of screen PPI compared to the DNA? Please explain.
65. JWS65 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 14:00 6 1
What's there to explain? I already said DNA has it over note 2. 440ppi doesn't really matter unless you look at it less than inch from screen or using magnifier. Again besides that, what does DNA have over Note 2?
Sure HTC is the first with 1080p screen, but everyone else is going to have that soon.
77. HDShatter posted on 28 Jan 2013, 15:20 3 0
Aslo you have to have verizon to use the DNA and I am not paying there overpriced fees.
61. Kev50027 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 13:40 4 0
I heard that the sides of the DNA can be dented easily. Is this true? The battery life is lackluster, as well as the lack of SD card slot and replaceable battery. Even Sense is starting to look long in the tooth.
112. TA-21 posted on 29 Jan 2013, 14:20 0 1
Some people say lack of micro SD slot is a con if this is a con you can buy HTC butterfly international version of DROID DNA.
JWS65-- if build, design and screen quality is on side of Droid DNA system configuration is same is Note 2 then HTC Droid DNA is winner of this fight :-)

It doesn't matter if HTC makes xyz Super Smartphone if the software is rubbish & bloated. They may do whatever they want but Super Smartphone ≠ More sales. Samsung is better at advertising and that's what drive them forward, they made more than anyone in the Android arena, $8.27B compared to HTC's insignificant $34M. HTC broke Sense, had repeated reliability and battery issues with their newer phones (even their WP8 devices) and flooded the market with senseless phones. HTC's condition won't improve unless they change their strategy and their software quality.
8. jroc74 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 09:55 3 0
Yea....HTC has been notorious for bad battery life. They finally seem to have that under control. While the Motorola and Samsung were the best for battery life for Android phones in released in 2010. And both has gotten better since then.
11. speckledapple posted on 28 Jan 2013, 10:13 6 2
i completely agree with everything you said. HTC did it to themselves and has not since awakended from its own dream.

software is rubbish and bloated? im sorry ive been using my brand new HTC and i can tell you its miles better than stock JB that i have been using for a long time. smooth and full of options. thats what it really is if you ever used one for yourself.
34. yowanvista posted on 28 Jan 2013, 11:09 8 5
Better that vanilla Android? You've got to be kidding me, HTC's source are obsolete, they still use an old kernel, non-standard code and have bloated their UI with senseless features. That obviously reflects on their poor sales. Their garbage isn't comparable with a state of the art smartphone like the Nexus 4 which features the very latest Android kernel 3.4 and a lag-free experience.
62. Kev50027 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 13:42 3 0
While I agree with you that Sense is bloated, I doubt that's what's hurting their sales. Most smartphone buyers get their phone because "it's cute" or "I like the way it looks". In other words, they're fools. Why else would Apple still be selling so many iPhones?
69. yowanvista posted on 28 Jan 2013, 14:44 1 0
Apple has a secure & stable customer base in the U.S, without this Apple means nothing. You wouldn't be surprised that iOS has the largest marketshare in the U.S. HTC doesn't have any, their marketshare has been dwindling for the past few years and whatever smartphone they introduced never improved their status, the demand for HTC phones is simply not there, at least not to the extent needed to rise the company.
114. b1acktiger posted on 29 Jan 2013, 14:41 0 0
The common people doesn't look at what android kernel does it have. People like me and you and the few others care about this. Most consumers care about the user experience and Sense was lagging behind TW and the mass marketing of Samsung completely thrown out of business. I personally like sense compared to Stock Android and TouchWiz.
100. jroc74 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 22:32 0 0
I like the custom UI's.... but Sense does some things thats head scratching...
Using a pic as a wallpaper...for some reason they made it hard to get the entire picture as the background.
41. JWS65 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 11:40 3 0
You are pretty much spot on. HTC phones look and feel good, but that's about it. Sense is total reshape of android OS, not just launcher, which is the cause of most of its issues like poor battery life, lags, memory/multitasking issue, etc. Also going with fixed battery, no micro sd doesn't resonate well with most android fans. HTC needs to change those things first to turn them around before it's too late.
47. TA-21 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 11:56 1 2
I think HTC on a big move with DROID DNA, if u use DRIOD DNA i dont think after that u say like this anymore.
79. maccess posted on 28 Jan 2013, 15:27 4 1
I'm sorry my friend.. the dna's pros over samsung are just the screen and build quality.. Anything else like features , capability and even the stock launcher ( touchwiz ) samsung is better.. that's why the galaxy s2 , s3 , note and note2 selling like crazy.. the user experienced of samsung phones much more satisfying i think for the costumer.. they even made apple looks like 3 years old kid crying in the court about "patent"
88. xoatomxo posted on 28 Jan 2013, 18:28 1 0
They say HTC sold a lot of DNA and Butterflys. But from where I live Northern New jersey and where I work NYC, nobody carries HTC. Only phones I see is either Iphone or Galaxy S or Note.
111. TA-21 posted on 29 Jan 2013, 13:50 0 0
Apple and Sammy they came all the time with a big advertising before their products launch and after that.
I only want to say HTC on a better move now from their past.
Build quality is the best part of an electronic device i think Sammy is not succeed on this part of their Smartphones.

if sammy worry, why produce pentile screen device to compete yours? Samsung never worried anythings!
78. HDShatter posted on 28 Jan 2013, 15:22 1 4

10. speckledapple posted on 28 Jan 2013, 10:10 3 2
I may dislike predictions but HTC right now is living a pipedream. It has to do with much more than just the device but its also the support behind it. The skills in applying long term effort to ensuring the devices they create are not pointless in a few months. HTC currently has a problem with releasing every phone in the universe but having no support for it. Until they can prove that they are better at that than Samsung, they will simply be living a pipe dream.
13. NateAdam8 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 10:17 1 1
Only if they change three things about there phones 1: Phones need more memory cause 16Gigs won't do against any other phone (At least 32Gigs if they keep making them without Micro SD slots) 2: Micro SD slot case people just love that tiny memory card handy 3: All big brand carriers must have there new phones and that means Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile cause without this what would Samsung have to have to worry about after all they've got 16gigs built in, Micro SD card slots and they're on all Carriers and not just Verizon, AT&T or Sprint they have T-Mobile covered so with this there nothing to worry about from a LIMITED COMPANY like HTC.
14. InspectorGadget80 posted on 28 Jan 2013, 10:19 0 1

"Samsung has been making "fewer moves" recently, in order to see what HTC is going to do next. According to Tong, that "means HTC has the ability to make Samsung worried."
Sounds about right because being the "cowards" and "copycats" that samsung are/is, they will never drop any product first knowing that it wouldnt last the year ........so they sit back watch all the original and innovative ideas surface .................then they copy them and make further enhancements.............
and what does the world do? the world says "wooooooow samsung is the BEST!"
they came in the mobile world built upon others creative ideas and now they continue to sit back and do what they've always been doing .............but even the "richest company in the world" is falling as we speak............so what makes copy cat and cheating samsung think they cant fall either?

S1 was and still is a great phone. My dad loves it and still has no plans to upgrade after owning for more than 2 years.
Want to know what's horrible? Go use an xperia x10. brb random reboots. brb keyboard doesnt even pop up when trying to type. brb just automatically sets language to a random one. brb phone just freezes and stop responding. All typical complaints from x10 users and myself included but don't worry, just send it off to Sony's warranty centre. They'll just reset it and the same thing will happen again
