Breakdown of the Apple A5X vs NVIDIA Tegra 3 benchmarks
0. phoneArena 19 Mar 2012, 16:56 posted on
Apple made some bold claims about the processing chops of its newest processor, the A5X, which can be found in the new iPad. Apple specifically targeted NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor in the claims. Not surprisingly, NVIDIA...

the tegra 3 comes with 12-core GPU i think??
or m i mistaken?

Funny how apple is making such a big fuss over quad core GPU, Huawei's quad core processor also has either 16 or 18 coores
33. picka_vi_materina (Posts: 170; Member since: 21 Nov 2011)
Those cores are different. ULP Geforce cores are like the CUDA cores on the PC GPU series. SGX MP-core is like a 590, but with no loss in power, four SGX543 GPUs on one die. PSVita has this GPU clocked higher and rendering Uncharted graphics at a lower resolution.

Reading the Laptop Mag version ... A5X did better in the SunSpider/Java test (lower is better).
29. cheetah2k (Posts: 1026; Member since: 16 Jan 2011)
So... the A5X is a budget-centric low power dual core CPU with 4 core GPU which would suck on an Android tablet
...the Tegra 3 is a high end behemoth quad core CPU with 12 core GPU that would suck too much power on an iPad
34. picka_vi_materina (Posts: 170; Member since: 21 Nov 2011)
You got it all wrong. A5X is much more power hungry.
44. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
...smh. i should've known that's all you would've gotten out of this article. if there was a Tegra III in the new iPad it wouldn't handle it's Retina Display well at all and would probably lag up the Tablet. like PA said each SoC is specifically designed for each Tablet and OS but if you ask me which SoC i think is more impressive i'd say the A5X.
47. remixfa (Posts: 14253; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
i dont know why you think the T3 would lag up the tablet. The T3 has more raw horsepower, the A5X has more GPU power... which like you said, is a design need. Android requires more horsepower to run. If it can run android smoothly, it can most definitely run iOS smoothly.
51. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
i'm saying there's a chance that it would lag it up because the GPU isn't anywhere near as powerful as the PowerVR in the A5X. there's a good chance pushing the kind of pixels that the iPad version of the Retina Display has will make the Tegra III struggle. why do you think Apple would make such a signifigant boost in GPU power being as conservative as they are? my statement was purely about the GPU, i'm well aware that the Tegra III's CPU manhandles the CPU in the A5X.
53. remixfa (Posts: 14253; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
a few chip cycles ago maybe.. but now adays all the top end chips are more than powerful enough to run that resolution on iOS. the t3 beat the s4 while it was pushing 75% more pixels in the OneS vs oneX head to head.
iOS is just a bunch of icons. were it running Android 2.1 (and its lack of CPU optimization) instead at that resolution it would probably a different story.
that jump in GPU is purely for gaming and to help justify the new ipad's existence.
55. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
yeah, iOS changes things for sure but i was just using that simple little fact as an example of why these chips are best for their respective devices.
sure we're talking about immensly powerful GPUs here but we're also talking about an immensely high resolution too. for an Android Tablet with that Resolution i don't think a Tegra III would cut it. at least not with a Live Wallpaper or anything of the sort.

Great article as always Michael. I love it when I here an Apple salesman answer is it faster with yes it has quad core graphics. Its like a politician answering about the economy.

Again, I get that it's cool to hate Apple, but my God, give credit where credit is due...or just ignore the article/story all together. It's like, "Hey, I've made it so that a person with HIV can't spread the disease at all..." and folks reply, "But you didn't CURE it." It gets so old. The new iPad is a pretty solid product and does far more than what average (not nerds) folks want it for. iPods and iPads are some folks' first steps into technology because they are afraid of technology. We forget that sometimes, but Apple hasn't. That's why they've been able to capture the consumer market. If that pisses you off, ignore it. Or be a grown up and accept it and know that Samsung or Motorola is are going to try to top it and give you a better Android device.
I'm an Apple guy and I LOVE when Samsung tops Apple's last release because Apple has to come back with something better. We all win.

I have no problem with iDevices being products for idiots...But I do have a problem with Apple trying to get rid of all the others that, we,who don't want to use their idiot products, use.
In the past, where they just stfu and sit in a corner selling their s**tty Macs, the only people who hated them where those who used Macs and iPods and had a problem with them. Now, everyone and anyone who loves technology will understand the impact of what Apple is doing to the mobile industry with their sueing and their brainwashing. Did you know because of Apple, Samsung had to push an update just to replace that overbounce effect with that ugly blue glow on the SGS2, which imo ruins the user experience quite a bit?

Only idiot is you for calling people idiots because they have a preference different than you
21. frydaexiii (Posts: 1310; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
Yes, because liking a mobile OS that a 3 year old can master and a PC OS which does practically nothing is totally a preference, not the lack of mental capacity...
22. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
Hello ics have that blue tint too and it's all about personal
Preference ! If you like iPad more get iPad if you like prime more get prime nobody will blame you for your choice except some Fandroids that claims that people that buy apple is stupid
25. frydaexiii (Posts: 1310; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
What does blue tint have to do with anything? I'm talking about the overscroll effect, not the color scheme of the OS. And please, even before iOS devices came along it's been established that Apple computers are for idiots who can't handle real PCs because they're so afraid of "viruses and headaches" because they download and click every ad in sight.
iOS is no different, they lock the user up in this little sandbox and so little functions and claim it's stable, safer and easy to use. Well duh, If I'm comparing a rock to a car of cause the rock is more stable and safer than the car. But if you learn to drive a car and bother to take precaution, you're pretty much as safe as the idiot sitting on a rock to be safe and stable. So no, I don't believe it's a personal preference, more like if your brain can handle it or not...

Ok man we get it. You're practically a genius because you like to put widgets and live wallpaper on your phone.
59. frydaexiii (Posts: 1310; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
I'm not saying I'm a genius, I'm just saying you're stupid...get it right.

Hmm looks like someone is a troll. You've been proven an idiot earlier today and here you are trolling on acting like it never happened. Looks like you were wrong and Apple broke sales records.

lol, you can't win this argument, so you bring in another one? iFail lol
37. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
There is something called jailbreak . A lot of my Fandroid friends (yes , taste is different but still friends in real life ) say iOS is like a prison , can't do anything except you jailbreak . Well in android give you more freedom . Then I asked where ? He say if you root and blah blah blah but isn't jailbreak and rooting the samething ? Btw I tried root my father's galaxy s1 with superoneclick it just keep saying rooting failed I swear jail breaking is more simple . Oh and my dad love android phone a lot too , just that he still like his iPad so he isn't a Fandroid . Unfortunately android is just wasn't my cup of tea , I don't hate it unlike some Fandroids that love iOS a lot
45. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
you probably didn't much care enough for the rooting process to work so it didn't. rooting is simple when you figure out what you're doing and the difference between rooting and jailbreaking is you don't completely relinquish your support from Google or the Manufacturer by rooting unlike what happens when you jailbreak. you're trash in Apple's eyes when you jailbreak.

But it's fun ! For a while
36. rudlie (Posts: 182; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
look who is the idiot one. samsung is the greatest apple fanboy. they were not only copied apple product design and os navigation. they also copied apple's marketing : strategy, advertisement style and apple store. the only one samsung can not do is they don't have a figure. samsung wanna be an apple. so, the truly idiot is u.
38. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
But the galaxy s2 and the iPhone look very different . And all the samsung bloat that comes with the phone sucks ! Unlike iPhone that is bloat free . Oh do you notice ? Most Fandroids love Samsung only
48. remixfa (Posts: 14253; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
there is no such thing as bloat free. that lovely tracking software that apple includes is bloat. any unwanted stock apps are bloat. dont kid your self.
56. drtech (banned) (Posts: 135; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
sorry to burst your bubble but iPhones don't have bloat
57. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
what he's saying is everybody has their own definition of bloat.
60. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
The s2 comes with game hub , social hub, Samsung apps , kies air and a lot of stuff that you don't need
63. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5669; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
what are things you need exactly? and you do actually need Kies Air. if that's how it is i would say things like iBooks and iTunes are bloat.
64. drtech (banned) (Posts: 135; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
Apple puts their own apps on there yes, but what happens with android phones is very different. Cell companies make deals with companies to preinstall apps on there like blockbuster, navigation, games etc. I've seen android phones that come Pre installed with like 20 apps. It's ridiculous. This apps sometimes proactively advertise to you and ask you to sign up. It's very annoying. Apple has app store(which you'd obviously want) iTunes which is needed for media, iBooks and newsstand. Personally I don't use newsstand, but one app is nothing compare to a bunch of junk.

Finaly! an apple fan who is not an idiot...
52. Pdubb (Posts: 239; Member since: 08 Aug 2011)
It also does far less than other devices could do as well. I don't hate Apple but let's not assume a criticism is hate. I don't like any of the tablets so far because I enjoy my laptop. As crude and old as it may be. It seems that the more they say all devices are converging into one; the more devices come out that people should buy to go along with other devices.
9. sorcio46 (Posts: 420; Member since: 27 Jul 2011)
Very good article, far away with less "magical" element in Apple products reviews.
"The numbers bear out what we expected from a battle between the Apple A5X and the NVIDIA Tegra 3: the Apple chip shines on graphics, while the NVIDIA chip is aimed more at data-crunching and power efficiency. This makes perfect sense"
This conclusion perfect metches with reality, Tegra 3 for heavy CPU, A5X for intense graphics
About this "but the A5X was found faster on SunSpider. Of course, those browser tests could be just as much the software as the hardware." with Chrome Beta tegra 3 on Prime can do better than iPad 3 in sunspider benchmark
39. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
I hope quadrant standard for its so that we can compare both of the devices and see who wins
10. ian132 (Posts: 28; Member since: 20 Feb 2012)
I wonder what the clock speeds of the gpu in the ipad and transfomer are, because with that massive battery in the ipad im sure apple clocked them pretty high
35. picka_vi_materina (Posts: 170; Member since: 21 Nov 2011)
I bet they are low in the A5X, probably 200MHz. A5 in the iPad 2 might have them at 250MHz. Vita is the one pushing the GPU, probably 400MHz or more. One flaw in the A5X is the 1GHz clock which bottlenecks the GPU at such a high resolution.
11. matrix_neo (Posts: 326; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
very nice article Michael... I'm always reading all your articles. For me i still prefer android os even apple has faster processor or gpu, i like the freedom you can do to your tablet or phone and most especially the multitasking which ios is very left behind.
19. rudlie (Posts: 182; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
I hate the multitasking of android, and it makes me suffer. apps eating resource a lot and i used to cleanup my memory often to gain freemem and speed. my os getting laggy and sometimes crashing and then rebooting because that damn apps run on multitasking.
23. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
If you have an android phone use less apps !
It really helps with the performance and also do advanced task killer has an effect in android ?
28. rudlie (Posts: 182; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
task killer doesn't help much bcos the background apps will appears again in a minute. i don't need those multitasking, i need a background process which I can control like idevice rather than pure multitasking but it running wild.
40. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
Yeah so you should have gone with an idevice .There is an app for its called backgrounder which enables real multitasking for some apps but It will make it slow and rape your battery
42. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
I am on my iTouch 4 with only 256 mb ram .
Some situation that really bugs me is that lets say I am on a Cydia store , I need to search something so I open safari/opera , then I receive I notification from Facebook I respond to it next I called somebody through vibes and when I head back to the Cydia store it has to load again ! That's something that won't happen in android
46. MichaelHeller (Posts: 2693; Member since: 26 May 2011)
Get WatchDog. Apps just sitting in the background won't do anything to cause lag or crashing, and don't use much memory. WatchDog helps you see what apps are using a lot of background CPU, which is what would cause those things. It's not problems with the multitasking as a whole, but specific runaway apps.
61. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
Watch dog is for jail broken iOS device or android ? Cause I wanna give it a try
49. remixfa (Posts: 14253; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
riiiight. maybe u shouldnt buy the cheapest android you can find, eh?
13. Arpad (Posts: 39; Member since: 05 Jan 2012)
What about the ram? Will it receive the rumoured 1.5Gb?
1Gb is so 2011, we are talking about stuff that is out of fashion!
26. bayusuputra (Posts: 957; Member since: 12 Feb 2012)
it is 1GB, in case you are left behind, the new iPad is already out, so it WILL NOT get 1.5G of RAM..
14. speckledapple (Posts: 887; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
This is a great article. It brings light to things people often forget when companies create these products. The talents that make any one product better than another has many factors to interpret. However, in this case its a simple matter of how each product was created and for what purpose. I think the Tegra 3 will be an amazing processor for phones just as the A5X works for Apple. The rest of it like the phone, the software, the experience, thats all up to the customer.
24. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
The Fandroids at phonearena.com don't care . As long as an article/comment with an apple written on it they don't like it except for some apple sucks comments
27. bayusuputra (Posts: 957; Member since: 12 Feb 2012)
dude, i am android fan, but i still give credits when they are due, whether for apple, samsung, or huawei, or whatever..
i believe you yourself fall into the very same category that you stated, even with the comment itself..
i still recommend people to buy apple if what they want is something simple with a lot of nice graphical interactions..
but i told them to consider android as well, for the sake of versatility and openness..
41. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
Me too . But some Fandroids in this website have gone into extreme .
54. remixfa (Posts: 14253; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
for someone that complains so much you are just as guilty as anyone else, so why don't ya just quit whining because it rings hollow.
15. Luuthian (Posts: 222; Member since: 09 Sep 2011)
I don't see why anyone would even bother to start a fanboy fight over graphics processors. So few games even bother to make use of the power of these devices right now. As long as your preffered device runs smoothly and looks pretty, who cares if the competitions graphics look only slightly prettier? You can still play their games just as well... Well, we could if Android would actually get those games :/.
