On a side note, this whole drama is could only happened to bb that stupid enough to redirect everying to their server.

With nokia, andoird, ipone you won't ever lose the ability to internet (web browse) at all.

This is what happens when you market triple-DES as the latest, greatest, and strongest encryption... even though you've been using it for a decade already, and many other servers and networks have moved on to AES...

the point here is...
BB AOL-like infrastructure is as fragile as an egg.
and it's need to evolve using ordinary GPRS/3G instead of specialized stupid bb services.

What do you mean by "AOL-like"?

3G/4G services are run on all-IP subsystems... it is almost entirely "cloud-integrated" right out of the box. 2G/3G/4G underlies the BlackBerry system... it has to. Every other major OS will be doing the same thing soon (iCloud, SkyDrive, virtual Java engines, etc...), if they are not already.

If some kid is texting on their BlackBerry, then they could be using the triple-DES encryption, as well as whatever standard encryption the native network offers (64-bit A5/1 or 128-bit A5/3 for GSM/UMTS, 128-bit CAVE + 42-bit P-RN for CDMA/Ev-DO). If you think this is a terrible waste of encryption effort, then what do you think about the same kid texting on their EVO 4G, over WiMAX, which uses the Rijndael-based 256-bit AES? I suppose that is an even bigger waste of encryption in your example... but the deal is that it comes standard with the network.

My point is that the encryption is there because customers demand good encryption in general... they don't want to be eavesdropped on... and that the all-IP subsystems are subject to the same weakness that the BlackBerry servers are subject to... the problem for BlackBerry is that a) their secondary encryption method is weak and outdated, so the server on their end is more susceptible to being compromised, and b) they are subject to double jeopardy for server failure... if the network goes down, they go down... if the BlackBerry server goes down, they also go down. Everyone else relies on the native network... BB relies on both the native network and their own servers, simultaneously. Twice the data handling steps... at least twice the risk of failure or decryption compromise...
