BlackBerry executive won't mention the Apple iPhone

0. phoneArena posted on 01 Feb 2013, 10:31

BlackBerry U.K. executive Stephen Bates was interviewed by the BBC for its 5 Live Breakfast program and was asked what BlackBerry has learned from the Apple iPhone; instead of coming up with an answer or saying that he didn't want to answer the question, Bates fumbles and rambles though a response that basically promotes BlackBerry...

this is insane! why should he answer? why is it that everyone thinks iPhone as the LEARNING benchmark? what INNOVATION has iPhone brought to the smartphone market all around the world other than making "ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND STUPID PHONE A FASHION FIGURE"???

Poor Chap you are, one who does not accepts facts.

46. lyndon420 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 15:56 1

Got some facts to share...let's have them. Looks like you were in the middle of making a point and then got lost somewhere between why you originally got an iPhone, and then trying to justify that decision to yourself somehow.

Actually dude, as much as we hate Apple for their arrogance, they certainly deserve credit. I'm talking about how they demonstrated to the other companies how to launch a product successfully.

I mean, there is a reason why a company could be wildly successful in a water that it has never sailed before and that is to make the user experience great. Apple nailed the user experience right when they launched the original iPhone back in 2007.

In comparison, Nokia's Symbian phones lost the smartphone game because Nokia never bothered to make the user experience of Symbian-based handsets great. Yes, we all know that Nokia's Symbian-based phones are home to the key hardware innovations in the past decade. But then, Nokia never bothered to improve the software side of things. They are more on hardware and complement it with problematic software which spoils the user experience.

At least give credits where it's due.

WOW.....so basically the Blackberry is just a copy of iphone/android OS, design, interface, etc. How is Blackberry different from the iphone and Android? umm....ummm.....ummmmmmm

11. cripton805 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:14 13

You dummies. The reason he didnt answer that question is because it would be clear evidence for a lawsuit. What better evidence than him saying he took something from the iPhone. Even if it WERE true. This question would also be giving the iPhone positive remarks during a mothercrackin Blackberry Interview...

For GODS sake. Not everyone compares themselves to Apple or the iPhone. Its a different product for the Sake. Damn!!!

You people amaze me sometimes....

12. Ninetysix posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:21 2

Well Google learned from Apple/iPhone. Look at their very first android phone and you'll see that it's a blackberry clone. They then changed the the design to look more like the iPhone.

15. cripton805 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:34 6

You do know there were touchscreen rectangular phones before the iPhone right?

Did the iPhone copy them too? (sarcastically rolls eyes)

16. cripton805 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:38 6

Also, why is this a Blackberry copy? Could be a Palm or early Samsung too. Even Kyocera had that similar design early in the game. Heck the design could have come from Samsung!

Just showing how closed minded you really are.

26. Ninetysix posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:52 2

Once you click my google link. You can go ahead and express your rage to those close minded tech sites that reported that it's a blackberry clone.

Enjoy.

18. Ninetysix posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:42 1

Sure. Name one that was a huge success and changed the smartphone industry.

21. cripton805 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:44 4

So because it was a success it makes it a copy? Wow. Mind blown.

I never knew it worked that way...

28. gwuhua1984 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:57 3

You do know that prototype was only one of the prototypes that Google had in mind right? That prototype you mentioned was the only one Apple chosen to use to attack.

54. jroc74 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 19:22

I take it he's never seen this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FJHYqE0RDg

Look at the whole clip, but pay attention to 3:05 and forward....thats an all touch sreen phone with a track ball.

He must also dont realize that Android had dev phones that looked like BB clones...in 2010:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0STvlyCxog

At 6:48...it shows its running Android... Uh....Ninteysix....that BB clone you were so proud to show....would be a dev phone....it does say prototype. Android was thinking about both a BB like and all touch screen phone.

At the beginning of the interview, I was miffed that he couldn't answer the questions about the iPhone. However, towards the middle, I began to realize the brilliance of dancing around the question. Towards the end of the interview, it was clear that the interviewer wasn't interested in Blackberry 10 but was more interested in comparing it to the iPhone. Nothing like trying to bring a touch of "sour" to such a sweet event for the Canadian manufacturer. I hope the hire-ups continue this trend of ignoring the iPhone because it simply makes the interviewers look foolish. What's wrong with wanting to enter the market on your own terms? Oh...you can't be Blackberry 10 unless you list all the things you learned from IOS 5 and 6. Since, you know, everyone is just copying off each other...

17. dorianb posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:40 6

I like how he had tunnel vision to the question. "I'm here to push my product."
Maybe it would of been funny if he answered, "Everything we learned we learned from SAMSUNG!!!"

24. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:49 5

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.............smh well copying would be "one" thing to learn if we do learn anything from samsung! :)

33. rusticguy posted on 01 Feb 2013, 12:46 3

Foxabt was torn down the moment it landed with the defected pilot. Why was it torn down ? to see, research and copy of course ... once everything was learned/researched it was sent in dismantled condition to russia ... moral of the story... everyone copies :)

42. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Feb 2013, 14:41 1

Of course he didn't want to mention the iPhail, why would he? I wouldn't want to vomit on camera either.

People, take a page from this guy: if we all ignore apple maybe they will just go away and the world would be a much better place.

25. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Feb 2013, 11:51 6

it was quite impressive if you ask me, because to put it simple.......the iphone is really not much of a device to....... "learn" from :(

35. mclifford81 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 12:55 1

The unfortunate thing for Rim/Blackberry is that it's playing a game of too little too late in the minds of consumers. I am not saying that is the actual case but as far as the consumer market goes it appears that faith has been lost in Rim/Blackberry as a whole. If you go back to 2009 you can see another company that went through similar trials and did a complete overhaul of the Os called Web Os. Palm announced at CES in January 2009 their new hero device along with their savior operating system. It was reviewed rather well and took home awards that year. Things were looking great for a while with the exclusivity they had with Sprint and the innovation behind the Os, until things went south of course. Sprint also had another big announcement months later with the HTC Evo and that was just the beginning of the downfall for Palm. Os issues with update after update, outdated hardware with the release of newer better devices around every corner and of course the eventual sell out to a company that made an impossible promise, Hp. Rim in many ways appears to be going in the same direction here and it's been said that other companies have been looking at an eventual buyout. Speculation and rumor of course, but in a market where bigger is better and everyone is looking for the next best thing, well it's kind of hard to look the other way when history is seemingly repeating.

55. jroc74 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 19:43

Only big difference between the 2 is I feel WebOS was never put on good hardware. If it was.....WebOS might still be around. I think if BB can nail the hardware down...they have a real hit on their hands.

But I agree with your post.

38. Whateverman posted on 01 Feb 2013, 13:35 2

Why would they even ask this question to a competitor? Would you ask Microsoft what they have learned from Android, what Chevy leanred from the Mustang, or what Mike Tyson learned from Evander Holyfield? Probably not because that would be an insult to all the hard work and progress those companies and people have put in to perfect their product. They should have to pay homage to any other OEM when the interview is about Blackberry and THEIR new products.

"So, so, the key focus around BlackBerry 10 that we’ve really driven to is to deliver a new unique user experience."

What our hapless BlackBerry executive has just ATTEMPTED to say is that BlackBerry 10 offers a "new" unique user experience... in other words, this was an attempt to say that BlackBerry 10 is intended to do what iOS did in 2007, and to kick the iPhone out of the way; however, he said it very poorly. Yes, I believe his intent was to say it without mentioning the iPhone at all, since the iPhone is, in his mind, the "old" unique user experience. BlackBerry has learned, from the iPhone, that 'unique' can be a game-changer for user experiences, and their hope is that the newest 'unique' will always be the winner at any given moment. Unfortunately, the executive failed to express this view, without mention of the iPhone, in a polished and professional sounding way.

Either a) people will think that BlackBerry is sticking their heads under the sand in the face of Apple's competition, or b) people will see that this executive should have practiced harder on how to answer this question more fluently and without figuratively staggering around like a couple of other RIM executives (drunken on an airplane) that they've heard embarrassing stories about.

44. fanboy1974 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 15:14 1

I would avoid saying Apple/iPhone too. BB can't go up against Apple in court like Samsung.

45. lyndon420 posted on 01 Feb 2013, 15:51 2

I wonder...before the 'almighty Steve' passed away, what his response would have been to the question - "What did you learn from Android?"

I agree that this journalist needs to keep his questions relevant to the OEM he is interviewing.

49. icedhot posted on 01 Feb 2013, 18:11 1

i would done the same thing as Bates....why do i have to answer a question on another product when i m promoting my own? why? apple is not the benchmark. not by far!!

50. icedhot posted on 01 Feb 2013, 18:18 2

blackberry has been making phone when apple was only a seed.
