Better late than never: Samsung Captivate finally gets its Gingerbread update
0. phoneArena posted on 10 Jan 2012, 11:19
The update is not OTA, so you have to hook up the phone to your computer and update via Samsung's Kies sync software, but that's a small price to pay after such a long wait, isn't it? Apart from Android 2.3, the update will bring some bug fixes into your Gmail and YouTube clients...

VZW just updated the Fascinate back in Mid-December so AT&T is not that far behind. My friend got this update as he is bone stock non root. His phone was a bit snapper and less issues.

already too late for gingerbread update... But still, 2.3 is better than 2.2..

the Captivate was actually one of Samsung's better build devices imo.

Aside from the crappy GPS in it, the Captivate's a great phone. I loved mine and my parents' is still ticking.
It was amazing to see it really perform outside the country when you took it off AT&T's crap network. It was phenomenal in Europe.

That's too bad you have a rough time on AT&T. Mine is rock solid with my SGS2 Skyrocket. I never drop calls and the data rate is amazing especially in LTE areas.

big difference with the captivate and the skyrocket. you have a next gen device compared to the captivate. but yes finally the captivate has an os worthy of its specs. and hopefully customers find a bit more life in them saving them a bit of money

Well, I'd hope that it was good in LTE areas considering how new it is and the relatively low number of people on it compared to 3G.
My issue wasn't so much voice as it wasn't bad at that, but data was my problem. Data wasn't bad around town, but it often sucked while traveling. I'd go to an airport and data would just die. Don't know if it was due to heavy use or what (signal strength was usually good), but at best, it would drop to EDGE most of the time while traveling. This happened in most airports I went to - BWI, LAX, Chicago-O'Hare, Houston-Bush, and more. It worked ok at a few, but it was noticeably slower. It was annoying sitting next to friends who had Verizon and they were surfing away just fine.
I took it to Europe and used O2 in Germany and Vodafone in Prague. I never saw data work so well.
Now that I have unlimited data on Verizon and I'd give that up if I left, it's a hard sell to get me to go back to AT&T, even if the devices and network has improved.

This is awesome. I'll have to get ahold of my nephew's captivate tonight and try to update it for him.

I just upgraded my captivate to gingerbread and so far so good....but still I wished sammy will provide ICS for all Galaxy S owners! :/

ICS is already available through XDA the teamhacksung build 13 is extremely good. If you really want it learning how to install custom ROMs via youtube tutorials doesn't cost you anything

honestly I am not really good on rooting, installing custom ROMs etc, I usually wait for the official upgrade but since my upgrade is this summer I'll be getting the galaxy note and then I'll try to root my captivate (I'm just afraid of bricking my phone and not having a spare) (:

Give Sammy credit. This phone came out 1 and a half years ago and it got 2 major updates. My unlocked galaxy s ii is still stuck on 2.3.4 and the AT&T version is on 2.3.6.

Difference is you're going to get an update to ICS soon, and probably a minor revision update after that on that phone. So ya, I wouldn't sweat only being on 2.3.4.

Understandable, but what my point is that a phone almost 2 years old got two major updates. Not too bad. That two year contract phone deal seemed pretty good in 2010.

Samsung. Thank you for the late Xmas present.
I am running the leaked 2.2 from last August. Rooted with side loading capabilities using One Click Root. Anyone have any issues or success? Thanks.
