Better consider a case to protect the back and sides of your Apple iPhone 5 from getting scratched

With reports of Apple iPhone 5 units coming out of the box with nicks and dents, it might make sense for you to protect your new Apple iPhone 5 with a case; the glass back on the Apple iPhone 4S held up perfectly to the same abuse the iPhone went through...

This is sad that all my 5 gen of iPhone shattered and yet Apple did not improve it :(
Maybe next time I'm forced to be more careful to prevent this happened when I get one... And I prefer naked iPhone tho...
Oh well, waiting to be shamed and red thumb from fandroid...

wendy, if you do not drag the iP5 case through a bunch of keys, the original case will be fine. Abuse it and it will scratch. Same for the display. Over time, with plenty of use, the anodizing (black or white color applied to the aluminum base) will wear off. The wear is normal. If you don't want the wear to show, get a case.
If you want to get an iP5, do it. It is all about enjoying your purchase, not being told what to do. There are some downsides, but if the positives outweigh the negatives (FOR YOU), GET THE iP5! This from an Android fan....
The truth will set you free.

wow finish metal coated only haha..
1000$ for this sratchable back cover?
cheap polycarbonate plastic
or too expensive class a back cover super easy to scratch
50. anywherehome posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:53 3 0
you should consider smarter plastic eg Galaxy Nexus....you completely do not need any case even with keys in your pocket!! :)

So you change your profile picture, but yet your comments are meaningless and silly, you are just trying to start a fight between Android and ios users. That is so silly.

it started with their maps, now its the casing built.. seems like we'll be seeing fail after fail in the coming weeks. keep em up apple! i love you... NOT!

Based on this review I will need to get a case for mine. I have a bumper, but I am looking for a shield for the for the front and back. I believe in showing off the phone without a case like Otter. This takes away from its unique look.

Yeah, A skin is the way to go. It in no way changes the look and feel of the phone. So Apple order up 10~20 million of these and hand them out! Thanks.
75. yodawg posted on 24 Sep 2012, 14:48 1 0
XO's video is pretty awesome. It shows that their skin fills in scratches too. Looks like apple needs to order about 20 million of these haha

I thought it doesn't get scratch because it is Apple......well another failure here...!!!

Lol. "Grows up and thinks this is what your suppose to do with them" . I hope kids will not grow up to become that naive and stupid. But good article. I bought my girl a case for her iPhone5 .

Then what's d point of all premium materials if u can't feel them, with cases surrounding that beautiful materials. Now it makes sense why Samsung choose 2 use plastic, cos u gonn cover it anyways, which makes d phone lighter.
Just saying. My own opinion ppl.
18. erick01 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:45 3 0
you´re right: hide beautifulness because it is FRAGILE?? No sense at all!!
23. wendygarett posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:50 4 1
Dude... I always bring my shattered naked iPhone to the public... And I don't care how people think the word fragile... As long as I'm happy with it that's fine...
45. lyndon420 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:33 3 1
That's what baffles us about the vast majority of iphone users...why you fall victim to the fashion/trendy mentality. Seems like you all are willing to sacrifice functionality for fashion and/or fitting in.
49. Droid_X_Doug posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:47 1 0
Remember, in the just concluded Apple v. Sammy lawsuit, Apple was able to get the jury to agree that it could patent 'cool'.... Whether the jury decision sticks is another matter.
But for now, Apple has a patent on 'cool'.
Separately, when women are willing to drop US$600+ on a pair of Ferragamo shoes, it is ALL about fashion. Apple just managed to tie into this mindset. The black iP5 is striking in its appearance. I just wish it was more capable function-wise, but that is me.
7. a1000smiles4u posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:29 11 1
And they blame samsung for poor selection of materials
31. bucky posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:36 1 1
There is no comparison between the two for materials.
10. erick01 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:32 1 0
Ion plating is supposed to be scratch resistant, isn´t it? Is it extremely expensive? Would it have been convenient its use on the iphone?? Help, please.
44. Droid_X_Doug posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:31 1 0
Too expensive. Also, HTC tried ceramic with less than stellar results.
51. BattleBrat posted on 24 Sep 2012, 00:12 1 0
That's hard anodizing you're thinking of, you CAN hard anodize aluminum, but it gives it a matte finish, you most often find hard anodizing on flashlights, surefire hard anodizes their flashlights...

The new back cover of the iPhone 5 makes it better to hold than the previous(4/4s)models but if it's gonna get this kind of scratches and dents because of carelessness, it will surely be better to get a case
13. wendygarett posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:38 2 2
The back cover of aluminum is the same material of the new iPad... Which is pretty comfortable to hold because of smoothness of it...
I don't think some will sacrifice it tho...
15. tiara6918 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:42 1 1
Thumbs up for you, yes the new aluminum back cover on the iPhone,iPod and iPad makes it comfortable to hold because of the smoothness.
17. wendygarett posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:44 1 4
Well then, can you bought one toe please XDD
just kidding
19. wendygarett posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:46 0 6
Bought one to me please*
Ugh stupid typo...
21. rasinhussy posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:48 1 1
Aluminum is a softer material than glass, of course it is going to scratch much easier. Try the test on any plastic phone and let me know the results.
26. rusticguy posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:13 2 0
With Jacket on it doesn't make a difference whether it's Polycarbonate or Aluminium.
46. Droid_X_Doug posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:33 2 0
Yup. That is how it is with my GS III + Otterbox Commuter case.
53. BattleBrat posted on 24 Sep 2012, 00:16 1 0
Thumbs up on the commuter, use one for my RAZR, sleek and sexy, like a stealth bomber.
52. BattleBrat posted on 24 Sep 2012, 00:15 1 0
Plastic (polycarbonite, but preferably, Lexan) can take a beating better than aluminum, beat up a water bottle and a can of soda and see which one leaks first.
22. iced_heroine posted on 23 Sep 2012, 20:50 2 5
so, now that the precious light weight phone is prone to scratches and needs protective cases, and most of the case are alluminum,, it wont be light weight.. lol
how much weight does the alluminum case gives the iphone?
ANOTHER FAILURE!!!
and to think, some iphone trolls bash nokia for its weight..
25. rusticguy posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:09 3 0
So with jacket on what advantage does ALUMINIUM get as comapred to polycarbonate (which ifans keep saying it's cheap plastic ... oh wait they can't differentiate as usual) ? .... :D
28. Paximos posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:28 1 1
I returned my 64gig iPhone 5, sticking with my unlocked 64gig 4S, much better build.
29. mas11 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:30 3 0
Apple is really innovative, let me back up this seemingly crazy claim. They always find a new way to make the iPhone fragile so you have to spend money on repairs and replacements.
33. ddeath posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:41 2 0
Maybe it is a pact with their vendors who makes cases? Glass body that breaks once dropped, aluminium body that scratches easily.. it is starting to make sense. :D
40. rusticguy posted on 23 Sep 2012, 22:51 2 0
Deal is already in place for recycling aluminium scrap :)
36. TROLL posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:54 1 1
5 billon dollars were spent on repairs. Wow Apple rinsing money from left right and centre.
38. bucky posted on 23 Sep 2012, 22:23 0 2
You're right. Samsung does it for the love and not the money.
47. Droid_X_Doug posted on 23 Sep 2012, 23:36 2 0
Not to mention cases for the iToy. Got to help out the accessory manufacturers....
32. ddeath posted on 23 Sep 2012, 21:38 1 0
Aluminium and edges makes a poor combination, which is why we are seeing scratches and dents on the edge of the body. iPad has 'rounded corners', so they don't have the same problem. It is also why HTC makes their unibody phones have 'rounded corners'. Oh wait, they are so gonna get sued. :p
42. rusticguy posted on 23 Sep 2012, 22:53 2 0
And the person who designed it already made enuff to buy a 17 million house :D
43. devildlm1 posted on 23 Sep 2012, 22:56 3 0
Putting "premium materials" on a phone is like putting chrome rims on a car. It adds unnecessary weight, scratches and scuffs are extremely visible and has absolutely no benefit whatsoever outside of looking nice.
54. BattleBrat posted on 24 Sep 2012, 00:18 0 0
say what you want, the RAZR is made of "premium materials" and it is sexier than, well, anything I've compared it to.
