Best smartphone of MWC 2014: PhoneArena awards
0. phoneArena 28 Feb 2014, 09:19 posted on
MWC 2014 was a tremendously exciting expo, and that's mainly thanks to the impressive flagship smartphones that got announced. We can easily distinguish three top-shelf handsets that undeniably managed to make the biggest bang at the show. Those are the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Sony Xperia Z2 and the LG G Pro 2...

I knew it. lol
But for me, the Sony Xperia Z2 is the best smartphone on MWC 2014, the second one is the Nokia XL.

+1 Z2 deserved this award, it uppercuts the S5 in almost every conceivable way, but hey the PhoneArena staff must be hurt so they need a giant band aid anyway.
33. Ashoaib (Posts: 3229; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
How Z2 uppercuts S5 in everyway? uppercut is only in the design n ram rest of all Z2 is getting uppercuts... just wait for reviews on different sites, sony is good in always fu*king something in their phones...
by the way S5 is looking extreamly ugly in gold n blue only and looking quite fine in black n white...

They're too blinded to see that. If they were really "lovers of tech," they wouldn't be so damn one sided. G Pro 2 is pretty damn great, but that UI is dreadful. Z2 is awesome, but Sony always messes up on the software side, in both UI and camera.
46. hassoups (Posts: 471; Member since: 06 Jun 2013)
That UI is really sad, what's more sad is that they can't seem to optimise their software for their own lenses
49. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Especially the lenses. How does Apple, LG and Samsung do a better job than they do when it comes to camera software?
47. hboy857 (Posts: 349; Member since: 03 Jun 2013)
Don't worry Z2 still wins PhoneArena's reader awards.
55. hassoups (Posts: 471; Member since: 06 Jun 2013)
You mean 6 months lol... I wonder how it feels to be a z1 owner...
80. CanYouSeeTheLight (Posts: 1116; Member since: 05 Jul 2012)
Really? Let me see, what has Samsung launched after the S4 LTE, S4 Octa, S4 Mini, S4 Zoom, S4 Active, S4 LTE-A and S4 Black Edition. BTW we are blinded? Are you talking about the 80% that said they didn't like the S5?
112. Ashoaib (Posts: 3229; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
80% votes just by looking photographs... best of MWC2014 award is by looking n checking physically... so what do you think which is more credible? Views based on photos or handson experience?
120. hassoups (Posts: 471; Member since: 06 Jun 2013)
But it's still an s4. The zoom is a whole different product. But still here's a star for you effort.
64. hboy857 (Posts: 349; Member since: 03 Jun 2013)
Yes, there's always next year and i agree with hassoups that they didn't properly optimize their software for their previous flagship phones but since with Z2 Sony has tremendously improve their display tech i'm hoping maybe this time Sony properly optimize their software for their own lenses. I'll wait and see what Erica Griffin say in her review.
75. hboy857 (Posts: 349; Member since: 03 Jun 2013)
Yes, +1 for Erica Griffin. Since you love her, did you see what she said about S5 on her first impression video. She called it " Cheap toy".
And what she said about the gold version " gaudy, tacky nasty thing". If you didn't see it. See now. here is the link.https://www.youtube.com/watch?
and if you have time please kindly see what she said about Z2
And i also love her. My third favorite tech reviewer.
83. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
She's up there next to Aaron from Phonedog, John R from TrchnoBuffalo and MKBHD.
89. Amir1 (Posts: 333; Member since: 20 Aug 2013)
she's better then all of them. she makes the most in depth and interesting reviews. they are amateurs.
97. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Aaron? Amateur? My eyes deceive me...?
107. jellmoo (Posts: 1498; Member since: 31 Oct 2011)
Aaron's not with PhoneDog anymore though, and their quality has *really* suffered because of it.
110. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
I know. He had the best reviews, regardless of the brand.
132. Kyokado (Posts: 115; Member since: 11 Jul 2013)
Didnt he go join John R at technobuffalo for a short period of time? That was the period where technobuffalo was godlike.
136. osanilevich (Posts: 284; Member since: 29 Sep 2009)
Anyone remember Noah from PhoneDog? Last I heard he was at technobuffalo

I didn't even have the read the entire article. I already knew before clicking on it that the S5 would win, according the Samsung fanboys at PhoneArena. They have always given Samsung devices, especially the flagship Galaxy line, a top spot although this time with with S5, highly undeserving!! It's so obvious PA is getting paid to promote Samsung. I knew this for many years with the Samsung advertisements and S5 permanently featured all year long on the main page. But there is no better proof than this people!! The Z2 definitely won this time around. And still, the S5 is being hailed as the winner. This is pathetic, PA! We are not stupid!!
24. chunky1x (Posts: 270; Member since: 28 Mar 2010)
This is the best trolling by Phonearena ever.
27. mail2eswar (Posts: 15; Member since: 06 Mar 2013)
I also knew it before opening the page. But I wanted to know how PA is going to justify their selection. Now I am laughing. No gimmicky features? PA do you think heart rate monitor is not gimmicky? And what about finger print scanner?...
And apart from these "gimmicky" features, I can't really see any innovation in S5. And what should I say about the design?
Did you guys check the Camera Quality? GSM Arena posted some camera samples of indoors. The quality is worst. It is a step backward from S4. There are no details at all in the indoor shots. The out doors are much better and HDR mode brings out some very good details from shadows. But the details are bad again. There are some very high over sharpening. In the Z2 hands-on, they have posted a camera sample from Note 3. Which looks much much better than S5 sample. Do you call this Camera improvement?
Irrespective of how bad the device is...Samsung is going to be there as the best device in all tech sites. This is how Samsung gains customers.
In my opinion, Z2 is much better than S5 in every aspect. I cannot see single area where Z2 is lagging behind S5.
29. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
It's lagging behind customer experience. If history repeats itself, the Z2 will have a 3200mAh battery but still won't last longer than the S5.
37. Ashoaib (Posts: 3229; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
I am going to say yes to smurf this time...
79. joonlin (Posts: 11; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
That is the power bank job. Don't tell me because of the battery last longer only you choose for the S5? Yes, for those who don't mind a plastic built quality. I'm a customer, I want to buy thing that what I pay for. And S5 user is pay for plastic build quality? Ya. Functionality Samsung win Sony, but not Samsung Galaxy S5.
84. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
You buy a device just for looks or for functionality? What's the use of owning a Mercedes Benz if it's only limited to 20mph?
93. joonlin (Posts: 11; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
You are telling me Sony Xperia Z2 don't have any function to live your life? Only S5 can make phone call, email, camera, and most important is heart rate sensor. Because heart rate sensor is using everyday.
99. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Not to fit my needs no. Since my grandmother is getting older, keeping track of her health is the most important thing. The S5 having a heartbeat sensor is just a little feature that makes me draw to it even more.
103. joonlin (Posts: 11; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
Ok. That's means we are different user. I'm just a normal user that can make phone call and some online stuff. The heart rate sensor is quite reasonable for you. But I think for accuracy, my advice is better to buy a heart rate device to check your "grandma" heartbeats. grandma only have 1. S5 is affordable for you I think the heart rate device wouldn't be a problem :-)
128. noteseries (Posts: 80; Member since: 29 Oct 2013)
s5 has removeable battery n extra battery kit , thats the main reason i choose samsung flagship, we can always swap it anytime we want it, my phone will never gonna stuck on wall charger or even on a power bank, can sony or other brand do that?
91. teerex42 (Posts: 202; Member since: 14 Jun 2012)
FYI dude heart rate monitor is fantastic, especially if you work out and use ur phone a lot. It's great that you can check it whenever you want. Finger print sensor very intuitive... You can pay your bill and use it for paypal which lot's of people use. Screen super amoled blows away all other screens. Sony's design is a very bland boring square looking. If I wanted square and bland I'd get an iPhone and even that phone isn't square! Just wait over the next few months when Samsung announces the S5 with the qhd super amoled screen along with 3 gig of ram and whatever else may come.. If it holds true it will be epic. All that being said the S5 is different than the S4 and what people call gimmicks I've found quite useful. I use them quite a bit. People that state gimmicky are just jealous cause their crap phones don't have the same cool features ha!
100. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
I agree with every single word in this post except for the Sony design.
40. doejon (Posts: 398; Member since: 31 Jul 2012)
no if it comes to realy usefull features it only can and will be the s5
yes is was disappointed to because of the design but i kinda think in real life
it will be looking good.. and if u look other phones the also dont changed a lot.
LTE cat 4
usefull fingerprint - not just only for lok the phone as it is on the iphone
a good camera
and so on..
sorry for my bad english
ans pS: i will take the galaxy note 4 for sure!
45. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Your English is fine. I understood everything you were trying to say. Design is subjective to a person, but the internals itself deserves to live to this title.
133. Kyokado (Posts: 115; Member since: 11 Jul 2013)
True. But when a phone is designed damn well, then design isn't really subjective anymore. Look at the Htc One and how many design awards it has won, i am pretty sure some people voted that it wasnt a good design. But to have won consecutive design awards, that just goes to show that the Htc one design has mass appeal. If samsung could change their design to BE more mass appealing, i am pretty sure theres no harm in doing so.
137. Ashoaib (Posts: 3229; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
Htc one has the best design in recent years... xplay 3s has followed the same cue
59. PapaSmurf (Posts: 10434; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Because they disagree with your views? Haha I smell bias. Do you?
71. jaytai0106 (Posts: 1888; Member since: 30 Mar 2011)
Total bias from Phonearena to award S5 as the best phone at MWC.... Z2 should be the winner
77. Ashoaib (Posts: 3229; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
Its not a bias... they just dont look at the design and mega pixels... they have done all round analysis
72. PBXtech (Posts: 1032; Member since: 21 Oct 2013)
While the XL from Nokia is a solid device, it's a budget device at best. Can't see giving it second place when there were a lot of great phones introduced.
76. draconic1991 (Posts: 195; Member since: 27 Apr 2012)
Sony Xperia Z2 was the best smartphone there. Even by the polls that phonearena took themselves.
Its just that these guys are so biased. And so much for s5 that im beginning to think that they are paid by samsung.
82. HouTexan (Posts: 435; Member since: 08 Jan 2012)
Um, everyone in the comment section is biased against Samsung and Apple; it doesn't take rocket science to know that. If you're basing your OPINION on the complete and utter BIAS that goes on in this comment section, you're LOST. People will blindly say that Samsung sucks simply because their favorite devices aren't on top. Get real, dude.
94. Amir1 (Posts: 333; Member since: 20 Aug 2013)
who cares what phone arena picks. lol. says nothing to me. in my opinion there's nothing to compare. Z2 wins easily. no match.
102. draconic1991 (Posts: 195; Member since: 27 Apr 2012)
I own an s3. Its not fun for me to say that samsung is doing bad. i'd really want it to do good but its not.
134. kevkyle (Posts: 97; Member since: 21 Oct 2012)
Z2 OR the NEW HTC ONE FOR me.....upcoming ascend p7(?) is another prospect for my acquisition....ReALLY was HOPING for S5 - but now kinda keeping options open for F Series......i need to burn some ....", )
135. skyline88 (Posts: 448; Member since: 15 Jul 2013)
with Sony's usual poor build quality (ever since the era of Sony Ericsson), late software updates or almost no update, bored as hell UI and bullet-train-speed value drop, its no weird that S5 got this easily.
143. John.V (Posts: 99; Member since: 27 May 2011)
Personally, I prefer the Xperia Z2 as well.
3. AliNSiddiqui (Posts: 382; Member since: 19 Sep 2012)
"Samsung seems to have come to its senses, and decided to cut out the gimmicks and introduce a number of exciting features that actually make sense, such as a heart rate monitor.."
Really PA? Heart rate monitor isn't a gimmick? You have to be kidding me...
16. tech2 (Posts: 3349; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
A feature under any set of circumstances is necessary for the operation of the phone cannot be considered a “gimmick”.
Now just because you don't find any usefulness of it doesn't become 'gimmick'. How is it a gimmick if it'll by used as an equipment at hospitals ?! http://www.phonearena.com/news
