Battle of the megapixels: 6-way blind camera comparison

0. phoneArena 26 Mar 2013, 08:01 posted on

If you're among the people who still think that a high-end smartphone can't be as good of a shooter as a dedicated point-and-shoot camera, get ready to have your mind blown away. That's because we're once again taking some of the best cameraphones out there for a shootout at the alley. Which ones we've picked, however, is something we chose to not share with you, guys. Instead, today we're having a blind camera comparison, in which you can vote for the photos you personally like the most...

They are all high-end phones, that's for sure. But who knows, maybe next time we'll throw a Sony Ericsson W800 in there as well. :)

Nick, this was great! And you're killing us with having to wait for the results, but that's kinda fun too. I know there's still going to be a little controversy when the "King" is crowned. After all, warmness, coolness, saturation and many other factors are purely subjective, but this is the first time in a long time I've really looked forward to the follow-up of an article. Good job, dude!

I think there is so much win in this, they could do it every quarter, and wee see how the phones keep getting better and better the king of the quarter decided t the end of each one, plus the pile of people surprised at their own judgment.... don't know why #3 is winning tho #4 is looking nice...

throw the 808 pureview in there.lol

one does not simply make a camera comparison without having 808 pureview with it

Is this a double blind or triple blind test? The photographer and guy who created the poll is hopefully different. And the one who tallies the votes should be different too and I like the idea of switching the phones numbering in each test.

i think its safe to say that #3's shots were the crappiest :/ outdoors, #4 was the best for me but indoors #4 and #6 are hard to choose between.

Results already -
1. iPhone 5
2. S4
3. HTC 1
4. Nexus 4
5. Xperia Z
6. Nokia 920

Regardless of which phone is originally what, PA can just change the names and reveal differently as they are usually convicted of being bias...
However, I do bet that either Lumia or HTC is #4, and I really like #4 and #6.
Voting in all categories for #4...

I think either Phone 4 or 5 is iPhone :-) Given the FOV of the cameras, I think 2 could be HTC One

they should have disabled comments on this post because some of the ppl opinion makes you look at some other pictures more closely just because someone mentioned it.

I'd like to compare photos side by side not each on it's own page. No vote.

That's what I was hoping for too. Maybe next time they will do that. It would make it a lot easier.

I asked for this too, having them side by side makes it easy to spot the better of them all I had to go back and forth lots of times

What PhoneArena should do for these blind tests is between the outdoor, indoor and video shots is switch around which phone is which. That way, if you picked a particular phone on the first vote, it would not bias your opinion on the second and third votes. If you picked a particular phone as the best camera on the first vote, you may be biased to think that that same phone is in the lead for the second and third votes.

For the last time U CAN'T TAKE GOOD PICS with a cell phone camera unless its' a DIGITAL CAMERA or a professional one. plus PA doesn't want too list the phone models cause their afraid we will bad mouth their precious crappy iphone

dude Ive been begging for this kinds of camera contest, it has a lot of meaning a shuts a lot of fan boys, heck I don't care if the phone that wins was not the phone I was rooting for, we need this every 3 moths and it should be like that, people vote based on their favorite brand, and I think regardless of what brand you support voting blindly for your favorite picture its like a pat on the hand for the company that worked hard to give us a camera quality they think is great

I think people should stop trying to guess which phone is which before making their selections. The goal of a blind test is objectivity, not trying to figure out which device is the one you are a fanboy of.

Also, for people consistently voting on one phone for all 3 tests, maybe PA switched the order of the phones for the three tests! Be careful if you just want to vote for one across the board.

A suggestion for PhoneArena: Block the comment section on these types of blind tests. You don't want people scrolling through the comments before they make their selections.

I think people must know what Phone 4 is and are fanbois because it doesn't look the best in the video at all or the low light.

people were crying that the 920 was the best on the last camera comparison. but after these results they are going to see who they picked as the best.... it wont be nokia either
